We are going in a week or so. I've never been to the US, let alone Vegas! We'll be there for just under a week. I'm apprehensive about so much! Will I be able to get a cuppa? What to wear? How to get the most out of the few days? If anyone has been recently or knows the hotel and Vegas well please talk to me 😀

Hello! I got married in Vegas 25 years ago and stayed at the Luxor - which was then the newest hotel on the strip! I remember it as a nice mid range hotel and loved the pyramid theming - very kitsch. I don't think it's as big as the newer ones like the Bellagio, so it's easier to get around inside and you're not queueing for everything but it's not in as prime a location as the newer ones. We have been back to Vegas a few times over the years and it's changed a lot - more expensive and family friendly. There's a lot you can do /see mostly hotel based, so it might be worth looking to see what will be on whilst you are there so you can plan ahead. In terms of temperature we have always been in the height of summer when it is boiling so light clothes are essential. I should imagine you could get a cup of tea but it will be disgusting!

I also went there 25 years ago when it just opened. We arrived from LA and as we drove in I remember saying out loud "oh my God, there's a bloody pyramid". They were super proud of the lifts at Reception 🤣

It's totally cheese on toast, but then that's Vegas for you.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/03/2024 12:24

Great stopping point for the Grand Canyon, also the Hoover Dam (which I bloody love).

If you can snag tickets to a big name show that's brilliant. Last time I saw Elton John.

There is also a gallery in the Bellagio with some really excellent pieces.

I like cheese, particularly done well. Nowhere is cheesier than Vegas but 3 nights is my limit.

No one will be dressed up. It's really not Monte Carlo. The tea will be minging.

Bubblegum922 · 31/03/2024 12:26

Choose another hotel OP, I’ve been to Vegas a lot and the Luxor is cheap for a reason.
Theres so many to choose from.

You can wear anything daytime it’s very laid back. Even to shows and concerts.
You’ll see lots of different types of dress at night. Some will be well dressed - others won’t be.
Obviously if you’re going to a high end restaurant or bar at night dress appropriately.

StepUpSlowly · 31/03/2024 12:28

I have been to Luxor twice in the last few years and it’s a nice place to stay at, you can wear absolutely whatever you want, the best way to enjoy Vegas is to walk around during the day visit the interior of the main themed hotels and then go to shows in the evenings.

Vegas is of the few places I don’t mind going back to for a short stop on my way somewhere else.

Stayed at the Luxor last May.

Cheap and cheerful hotel. We used it as a bad really, there is a shuttle tram that stops between four hotels including the Luxor.

The piano bar in New York New York hotel is amazing! $30 to get in, but worth it!

We walked to the vegas sign on the first day, everything looks SO close, but it's not,

Comfy shoes are a must! We did approx 35000 a day. We were there five nights, we did the helicopter strip tour, amazing views but over quickly,

We did the shooting range.

We also went to the biggest night club in vegas. Amazing to see. But each drink was 70 dollars so we didn't stay there long, we just made our way back to our own hotel via other hotels and stopped in several bar, cosmopolitan was very pretty.

Freemont street was interesting.

There's a lovely Italian restaurant in the Venetian.

We spent ALOT of money Grin but we also did a day of shopping in the outlet on the last day,

Ubers are cheap enough, we used as we got fed up of walking.

I can't wait to go back! We had a ball!

jackstini · 31/03/2024 14:05

I love Vegas, nowhere else quite like it - mad as a box of frogs!

If you embrace the cheesiness it's great fun

Luxor is right at one end of the strip so be prepared to walk a lot! Do the roller coaster at New York New York, gondola ride at Venetian, Eiffel Tower at Paris, fountains at Bellagio, shopping arcade at Caesar's Palace, rides at the top of the Strat

Helicopter trip for Grand Canyon is great too

Tea is fine - most hotels have Twinings English breakfast, you just need to ask them to put boiling water on it - sometimes they bring out a pot of water that isn't hot enough. And ask for fat free or 2% milk so you don't have to use creamer

If you are gambling - take advantage of the free drinks they ply you with! Only play with what you can afford to lose, there are plenty of low stake games.

All you can eat buffets are pretty good and there are some lovely restaurants too. Get tickets to a show if you can

Have fun!

GasPanic · 31/03/2024 14:23

They normally have some exhibitions there. I think maybe a Titanic one.

It's a bit out of the way, but there is a tram that will take you to other places.

Mandalay bay is close and a bit more upmarket.

There is a ton of stuff to do in Vegas so you will not get bored. Although you may run out of money.

The hoover dam is cool. The grand canyon hard to really get a good appreciation of on a bus trip. If you can get out to Bryce that is a smaller and I think prettier canyon that is much more manageable to walk around. But a fair way away.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/03/2024 14:32

A good timing choice weather-wise, OP; it'll be mid to high 20s but not the huge heat of the summer, and if your feet give out there are plenty of buses on the strip and even a free tram: https://www.vegas.com/transportation/las-vegas-monorails/

The Luxor's okay - decent mid-priced buffet too - but most of the big hotels are much of a muchness once inside their standard rooms

My own top tip for things to see is the Mob Museum; I went intending to fill an hour and was there most of the day: https://themobmuseum.org/

Edited because I forgot to mention the tea. If you're fussy take some with you, but you should be able to get Twinings in decent places; otherwise it's Liptons, and you might as well drink dishwater

Froniga · 31/03/2024 14:38

Hi
I stayed overnight at Luxor at beginning of March - on route to see my elderly father who lives in Utah.
Just a heads up - there’s no hospitality tray in hotels in Vegas. If you want a decent cuppa I’d take a travel kettle and adapter plug and some tea bags. Things are quite expensive in vegas! Have a good time.
PS; I opened an online Chase Bank account with debit card before going. No exchange charges like other cards and I found it excellent.

Florence4170 · 31/03/2024 15:00

Brilliant advice and ideas. Thank you all so much! I did wonder whether to buy a cheap kettle once there. Haha I can't believe I'm going to Vegas and US for the first time ever and I'm worrying about cuppa teas! I'm going to sit down and look at the shows, hadn't thought about the possibility of museums and what to do in the other hotels. Thanks everyone

Went to LV for my husbands 60th birthday. Helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon was amazing.

Maybe bring a travel one as Americans don't really use kettles so may struggle to find a cheap one to buy

Make sure you go downtown… Fremont St is grotty but in a fun sort of way. A lot of new trendy casinos next to the old fun ones. I love the 4 Queens and Golden Nugget. Speaking of the 4 Queens… Great restaurant that is is my favorite in Vegas https://www.fourqueens.com/dining/hugos_cellar/index.php

Very old Vegas and spectacular food.

The Mob Museum is fun to go through did the distillery and shooting simulator https://themobmuseum.org/plan-your-visit/interactive-experiences/

It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed at the Luxor, but it’s similar to most of the strip hotels. Clean, fun, but a little far away from others on the srip… take the tram to get you closer to the middle.

Not sure if it’s still on but we saw Absinthe at Caesars about 10 years about. Very very adult content and was quite funny.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 31/03/2024 16:07

If you want ‘normal’ tea ask for Orange Pekoe
thats what it’s called in North America

socialdilemmawhattodo · 31/03/2024 16:08

Went in late 1990s. Would never go again. I don't normally hold a grudge for decades, but it was that bad. And the food just foul. We were sent a full voucher to " compensate " - never used.

HowNice23 · 31/03/2024 16:08

Take comfy walking shoes as the strip is Loooooong.

It looks like it’s still running. It was a great show and the night I sealed the ‘Best Wife in the World’ title.

took my husband there for his birthday and by chance and our dumb luck he ended up sitting about 2 feet away from his favorite (American) football player and got to meet him. I of course took all credit for arranging it and he happily agreed.

EasterSnob · 31/03/2024 16:57

We are just back from Vegas a few weeks ago. We went for U2 last gig. We stayed in the Cosmopolitan.

I loved it. Anything goes as far a clothing goes. There were some mega glamour poses but most people dressed casually.

We found it expensive. We went shopping to the Outlets which wasn't that cheap maybe a few bargains in Kate Spade but that aside nothing. There is a shopping mall called the Fashion show it was cool too.

We didn't go to the Luxor but it was at the other end of the strip. It was such a
Buzzing city I think you could sit and people watch and still have a brill time.

There was Starbucks all over the place so you will defo get tea.

Vegetus · 31/03/2024 16:58

Get off the strip and get down to Fremont street, a totally wild and wacky place. My favourite bit of Vegas!

SnakesAndArrows · 31/03/2024 17:21

We always take a travel kettle if staying in hotels in the US. It takes ages to boil, but a proper cuppa is one of life’s necessities. There will be a fridge in the room so you can store milk.

Titanic exhibition off list 😀

I loved the titanic exhibition! Went about 15 years ago and it was the highlight of my trip, along with the bodies exhibition. The rest of Vegas I could take or leave tbh!
