We are going in a week or so. I've never been to the US, let alone Vegas! We'll be there for just under a week. I'm apprehensive about so much! Will I be able to get a cuppa? What to wear? How to get the most out of the few days? If anyone has been recently or knows the hotel and Vegas well please talk to me 😀

I stayed in the Luxor last May/June. It is a basic budget hotel.

If I went back I wouldn't stay there again, it's a bit far out. There was loads of road works due to the grand prix, this made using the buses really difficult.

I'd stay at Paris next time or somewhere nearby.

We did lots of shows, had lovely meals out, the highlight of the trip was a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon.

@Puppylucky Bellagio came before Luxor I’m sure

Nope: they were still building the Bellagio (soon to open) the first time I was in Vegas, and we stayed at the Luxor.

NotNowGertrude · 31/03/2024 20:09

I went last year & stayed at the Luxor which is been to 20 years before. It wasn't great, we were given a room in the pyramid & I asked to be moved as it was that bad, ended up in the tower

Food wasn't great

Would recommend Mandalay Bay, much better feel & better restaurants, just a short walk away

jay55 · 31/03/2024 20:09

There's a king tut exhibit, at the Luxor it is also rubbish.
Look at the go city pass for sight seeing.

I've stayed at the Luxor and it's fine, dated but fine, the weird lifts can take forever if it's busy so allow extra time to get anywhere and go for a wee before waiting to go back to your room Grin

Luxor can feel far from anywhere but it's easy enough to walk or get the tram to Excalibur, walk through NYNY and Park mgm and then get the free monorail up to Bellagio.
Not to be confused with the pay for monorail that starts at mgm. Although that's worth getting up and back once for good views.

Have a great time.

I loved Vegas. Completely mad but such an experience. I flew from rural NZ where I live to Vegas and I think I was in shock for the first 48hrs 😂

I can't get up without my coffee so I was buying iced coffee from the supermarkets and drinking that in bed every morning. Our hotel had ice available so we would store some ice overnight in cups in the fridge. It was over 45 Celcius when we were there though! The rooms don't have any facilities like most hotels but I have heard of people buying travel kettles from target and taking tea bags with them. The cost of buying tea each day will probably work out more expensive than a kettle.

On that note, prices are horrendous. It was probably worse for us as the NZ $ was really low against the US $ but we were blown away by the price of everything. If you are drinkers then drink at casinos as it will only cost you the tip.

Have an amazing time, I'm so jealous!

jeaux90 · 31/03/2024 20:21

I go every year for a week for work. Love vegas.

Lots of great tips. Take your own tea bags too.

Cosmopolitan is a great hotel to visit, hit the bar there. NYNY for the piano bar.

Comfortable shoes, plasters just in case.

If you get a choice ask for a room that is not in the Pyramid, the rooms in the side towers are a lot bigger.

Lol - I was just about to say that you need to ask for a room in the pyramid if that’s what you want as not all the rooms are in there. I stayed over 15 years ago. I don’t recall the rooms being small/shabby. I don’t remember it being miles away from anything either! There was, at the time a travelator down the pavement and a tram I think??

and as a Pp said, if you are gambling, even on cheaper slot machines, the drinks are free but remember to tip so the staff come back.

have a wonderful time.

Wonkypictureframe · 31/03/2024 20:26

The Luxor has got cheaper and a bit shabbier over time, and the ‘centre’ of the Strip has moved away from it as more hotels have opened further up. The trend has also moved away from the highly themed hotels to more luxury so the Luxor feels quite dated. I’ve been a handful of times since the late 90s and it’s definitely changed. But your hotel really is just a bed and there’s a lot of other places to explore.

Roaminginthegloaming · 31/03/2024 20:35

It’s interesting going through the airport in Vegas as there are fruit machines there!

Everyone has their hands out for a tip and it can be annoying at times: the bell-hop will try to grab your luggage and take it to your room, even though you may prefer to take it yourself. Tip required!

You may be escorted to your room and get loads of information about how to use the air con etc (another tip required!)

You will see tip jars everywhere! Most people working in the service industry don’t get a proper wage and need tips to survive - make sure you have lots of single dollar bills for this purpose.

Highly recommend the sunset helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon…the fading sunlight turns the rocks into a fabulous golden colour, almost as if the rocks are glowing- and the sunset is glorious.

Our helicopter touched down and we had champagne whilst watching the sunset….then you return to Vegas as all the neon lights are turned on on the Strip which is awesome.

Definitely take a fleece or lightweight puffer jacket: remember you are pretty much in a desert and once the sun goes down the temperature drops quickly and it can get very chilly. Most hotel pools are outside and won’t be open yet.

DoraSpenlow · 31/03/2024 20:46

Can't comment on the Luxor but a visit to The Venetian is a favourite with me. Indoor canals are amazing. Also if you walk through reception at The Bellagio there is a lovely floral display. The reception area itself is also very impressive.

For pub grub type meals, Nine Fine Irishmen in New York New York was good last time we were there. They also have live music some nights.

Wonkypictureframe · 31/03/2024 20:48

For eating, the cheaper hotel buffets are a good bet. The non-strip ones are still great value but you won’t want to spend a lot of time on Freemont Street - although do visit.

Florence4170 · 31/03/2024 19:13

I am always cold, I’m scared now! 🥶🥶🥶

There is so much to do and lots of it is inside, you won't get cold - just wear layers

Sidebeforeself · 31/03/2024 21:04

@Wonkypictureframe Ive just checked and you are quite correct! I could have sworn bellagio was much older!

hangingonfordearlife1 · 31/03/2024 21:06

hated vegas. filthy dirty everywhere, prostitutes and cards for sex everywhere just not for me at all.

mitogoshi · 31/03/2024 21:18

Anything goes clothing wise, decent tea I doubt, if you can cancel some of your nights at the hotel (often possible in the USA) rent a car and see the Grand Canyon, zion national park or Death Valley - vegas is fine for a day or two

mitogoshi · 31/03/2024 21:19

Oh and the USA is very very expensive, be prepared

Frecklespy · 31/03/2024 21:21

We stayed at the Luxor in January. It was our first time in Vegas. It is close to the airport (didn't hear any aircraft noise from the hotel room). The strip is really long and the Luxor is at one end of it. We also did a lot of walking, through all the other hotels and using the free rail connections.

Our room at the Luxor was in the tower (the 'gold' lifts) and was perfectly fine. Not luxurious, but not shabby. Bed was comfortable. Plenty of food outlets and shops within the hotel. The Luxor is next to the Mandelay Bay and you can walk there without going outside.

We saw the Michael Jackson ONE Cirque de Soleil show at the Mandelay Bay which was outstanding. Would go there again if we go back.

We also went to the immersive show at the Sphere, which was almost $200 per ticket and, while quite interesting, wasn't worth that kind of cash.

We had breakfast at the Mandelay Bay too - the Seabreeze Cafe - lovely ambience and quiet and not too expensive.

Another very nice evening meal at the MGM Grand, Nellie's Southern Kitchen (not far from the Luxor), reasonably priced but food very good.

We wandered through other hotels, like the Venetian, Bellagio etc to see the Gondolas, the water fountains etc.

We also went on Maverick Helicopter tours to the Grand Canyon. The helicopter touched down in the Canyon for a champagne tipple and nibbles. It will also fly over the Strip for wonderful views. A lot of money but so worth it.

Fremont Street is the opposite end of the Strip - it's a long walk and the train doesn't reach it.

headache · 31/03/2024 21:25

We go end of this week! I’m taking a travel kettle and tea bags (have been to the US a few times and the travel kettle always comes with us like others have said takes forever to boil but worth it)
we’re staying in the MGM Grand (DHs choice) we’re having to do a bus tour to the Grand Canyon as DH is terrified of heights so a helicopter is a huge no-no.

FukMyNeighbours · 31/03/2024 21:30

Stayed at the Luxor. Was fine for my needs.
Zip line at Fremont Street after being at Heart Attack Grill downing shots from medicine bottles was a laugh but I dunno if I would have had the balls to stay and eat there 😂 Michael Jackson ONE Cirque de Soleil show at Mandalay Bay was excellent 👌

xyz111 · 31/03/2024 21:33

Take lip balm. When we went it was hot but windy and we all got sore lips. Thank goodness for carmex 😂

Mrsjayy · 31/03/2024 22:32

There Is a gorgeous little precinct near the flamingo and I think its called the linq hotel it has lovely pubs and bars that did reasonable priced food we discovered it our second last day.

The bus tour Is great early morning but well worth it, I'd rather poke my eyes out than go In a helicopter dh was disappointed I wouldn't go but the bus tour is fantastic.

Youcanpayit · 31/03/2024 22:48

I've stayed there. I had a room in the tower bit and not in the pyramid and I was glad of it because my mate had a pyramid room and it felt smaller because of the wall angles. I liked it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Vegas takes a couple of days to get used to because it's so dark inside the hotels, but it's great fun. I hope you have a brilliant time 🥳

Fuss · 31/03/2024 22:51

Have to say though, I’ve been visiting Vegas since I was about 14 and stayed in many of the hotels from New York New York down to the old Riviera at the other end that no longer exists, but after my last visit last year I’m not sure I’d go back again.
My issue was they have legalised marijuana now, and the entire strip absolutely stinks of it. General rule is it’s not allowed on casino floors, but clearly none of them are going to stop someone feeding money into their machines because they have a joint on the go.
I hate the smell, it clung, it clung to my clothes, my hair, the corridors. Everywhere really.

ADHDGURL · 31/03/2024 22:52

Helicopter ride over Grand Canyon, visit the Bellagio for the fountain show.
Eat at Hakkasan and go clubbing there.
I stayed at the Wynn which has the most beautiful Spa I have ever seen. Worth booking if you have time. Visit Old Vegas..its amazing cheesy fun! Dress up and go to the rooftop bar at Mandalay Bay.. exquisite! And the Chandelier Bar for cocktails..
Have an amazing time!
