We are going in a week or so. I've never been to the US, let alone Vegas! We'll be there for just under a week. I'm apprehensive about so much! Will I be able to get a cuppa? What to wear? How to get the most out of the few days? If anyone has been recently or knows the hotel and Vegas well please talk to me 😀

General rule is it’s not allowed on casino floors, but clearly none of them are going to stop someone feeding money into their machines because they have a joint on the go

They definitely would because they could lose their gaming license if they allow people to use weed and they aren't going to risk that. You should have complained to someone. I've never come across anyone smoking an actual joint inside (weed vapes yes) but agree that the strip stinks of weed now and it isn't pleasant. Marijuana use technically isn't allowed anywhere except a private residence, and this doesn't include hotel rooms. I wish they would enforce this more because it's gross. There's no need for it when vapes and edibles are readily available and don't stink.

FREMONT STREET is interesting 😂 definitely worth a visit though we we my during the day just cos we were scared !

I dropped thirty grand on the nugget slots, had to sell my ass on Fremont street,
And the drummer said there's sanctuary over at the Baghdad Room.
And now it's one for the money, two for the show,
Three to get ready and go, man, go.
You gotta tell me Mr Siegal, how do I get outta here?

I have been many times to Vegas and stayed at Luxor the first time, I wouldnt bother with taking a UK travel kettle now as they take far too long to boil.

Target is across the strip from MGM Park (Eataly is here and worth a visit for lovely sandwiches etc) walk up past Excalibur and New York New York hotels and you can buy a kettle for $16, you can also buy fresh milk in about pint size, keep it cool in an ice bucket . Take your favourite teabags and mugs ( these are overpriced as treated as souvenirs) I love a morning brew and coffee just doesn’t cut it for me, always very long queues in the mornings at Starbucks etc and a kettle is the price of 2 coffees.

Take lots of spends as everywhere is horribly expensive but better off strip. I use Revolut on my phone for shopping etc. Uber is very reliable for getting around.

Drink lots of water, if you sit at slots/tables and get a drink from servers give a $5 tip first round and they will be more likely to keep returning promptly, $1-2 tips for each subsequent drink and request water at same time. Portion sizes are generally massive, most places are happy to split a main between 2, weather should be lovely, have a flutter on the slots and have a brill time.

Ask for a tower room, not a pyramid room. You can actually see out of the tower windows due to the shape and the rooms are bigger I think.

I wouldn't worry about what to wear, it's the US. They'll all be in trainers and T-shirts.

user1471548941 · 01/04/2024 08:06

People have mentioned it but I want to shout it from the rooftops, go and see Cirque de Soleil, particularly the traditional shows rather than the music themed ones….

I paid a stupid amount of money to see O about 8 years ago and it’s
still in the top 3 things I have ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat with my jaw on the floor. Even if you are not a show person the things they do are just insanity.

100% agree

A bit like all French people wear x and all British people wear y?

There's a huge mix in Vegas, just like there is anywhere.

If you want coffee, sit yourself at a slot machine or gaming table and order from the cocktail waitress for a $1 tip 🤣

Florence4170 · 21/04/2024 15:34

We're back! Thanks all for the advice. We didn't get to do half the things I would have liked because we were in a group and they wanted to do certain things and to be honest there was only one day left when they had gone, so not a lot of time to do stuff.
The Luxor was fine, not luxurious at all but ok. Shower was very good! We didn't have any contact with staff, only housekeeping once when they came in early and unannounced. We spent a couple of hours around the pool but didn't go in. You could order food and drink to be delivered to your individual sunbed - goodness knows how much that cost? We ate once in The Irish Bar which was ok, fairly mediocre. You could spend a whole day in the Mandalay Bay and Luxor, pottering around and looking in wheat are bizarrely called the "shoppes".
Tram to Mandalay Bay and Excalibur, travelators everywhere if you are not keen on walking (but we did loads!). I took approximately 4 times as many clothes as I needed, it was very warm outside and pleasant inside. I had been told it was very cold in the casinos but it just wasn't. Little chilly at night but only because we had stayed out late and not had a chance to go back and get a jacket.
Fremont Street was brilliant! Live bands, loads if street artists, lots going on. I thought prices were awful. I got a Monzo card, don't know why because cash would have been better really, When you order a drink at the bar you have to say what tip you are giving before you get the drink. Suggested this are up to 20% and when they are standing over you (and you haven't got your drink) it's hard to give anything other. We spent a lot on water, you really need it, but later discovered an ice machine and used that.
We did see Bellagio fountains, which were fantastic. Next night the show was cancelled though because of wind. We saw the eruption at the Mirage, wouldn't make a special journey for that but it was good fun. Missed the pirate ship fight at Treasure Island.
We had intended to go up the Stratosphere but it was $40 to to up there, so we didn't.
Definitely wish I had brought a kettle. Saw one at Walgreens for $20 on our last day. My friend kindly let me use hers and yes it does take ages to boil but it does eventually and saved my life, I'm really not keen on coffee.
Thanks again to everyone who commented, I had a great time. Not sure if I would go back, I think it's great as a one off but that's probably it for me, now.

Hello! I got married in Vegas 25 years ago and stayed at the Luxor - which was then the newest hotel on the strip! I remember it as a nice mid range hotel and loved the pyramid theming - very kitsch. I don't think it's as big as the newer ones like the Bellagio, so it's easier to get around inside and you're not queueing for everything but it's not in as prime a location as the newer ones. We have been back to Vegas a few times over the years and it's changed a lot - more expensive and family friendly. There's a lot you can do /see mostly hotel based, so it might be worth looking to see what will be on whilst you are there so you can plan ahead. In terms of temperature we have always been in the height of summer when it is boiling so light clothes are essential. I should imagine you could get a cup of tea but it will be disgusting!

So did I. Stayed at Luxor and got married at the Graceland chapel

Florence4170 · 21/04/2024 15:44

I meant to say, the Deuce bus is great. 8 dollars for all day, up and down the strip Every 20 minutes, cash only

It sounds like you had a good time it's all a bit much though and like a slap in the face we loved it but wouldn't rush back either.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 21/04/2024 20:09

Thank you for the update. Good to hear you had a reasonable holiday.

headache · 22/04/2024 00:05

@Florence4170 we went 2 weeks ago! I agree it was SO expensive! We stayed at the MGM Grand room was lovely. We had a travel kettle, teabags and soya milk!

walked loads too, the casinos were so big took forever to find you’re way out.

Gambling was rubbish $20 in a slot machine 3 goes and gone. $25 a go at the tables too! We had dinner up the Stratosphere which was fab but costly. The sphere was ok the show was depressing (how humans have messed up the planet). DH loved the Allegiant stadium tour but the best part was the bus trip to the Grand Canyon.

Also don’t like how smoky it was in the casinos and that the strip stank of weed at night. Fremont Street was great though, we sat in the revolving bar at Whiskey Licker Up and just people watched.

Florence4170 · 22/04/2024 00:15

Oh yes, the weed! It was bizarre to see the ashtrays next to the machines. I really really wish I had organised a kettle myself.
We didnt see any waitresses bringing drinks for $1s.
minimum bet on the tables at Luxor seemed to be $20

Ive been to Vegas loads of times over the years. Things have changed hugely!

Im glad you had a nice time OP.

for anyone else going, Vegas now is VERY EXPENSIVE. I was last there in January. Virtually no cocktail waitresses serving people playing at machines anymore. Drinks at bars are ridiculously expensive

A really fab cheap but delicious place to eat is Ocean One in the miracle mile shops ( under Planet Hollywood ) Google it ! Its amazing

SnowFrogJelly · 22/04/2024 00:39

Been to the Luxor twice.. great fun but expensive

Sunnytwobridges · 22/04/2024 00:52

I love love Vegas! So much to see and do. I wouldn’t worry about your hotel as long as it’s clean. I stayed at one of the very cheap ones at the older end of the strip and it was ok, but it didn’t matter because we were out the door in the morning and didn’t return til after midnight most nights.

I’m jealous you are going, it’s one of my favorite places to visit it’s so much fun. Have fun!
