Boiling some rice. Says 10 mins. It's been on a boil for 20 and still not done. FFS this is why I buy microwave rice. Just needed to rant. They lie on the packets

Boil in the bag rice!! Game changer!!

Oh please come back OP!
If you’ve actually been boiling it for 20 mins as you say, then for the pan not to have boiled dry, you must have added enough water to sink the Titanic. In which case, you’re going to one sludgy mess in there, and there’s no way it isn’t (over) cooked.

I simmered some for 20 mins recently, just a fuck up on my part, I muddled up 10 mins simmer and 10 mins standing with lid, off the heat. This is why I can guarantee you gave it will be a sludgy inedible mass now.

Rice is like people: they are all different. Jasmine, Basmati, long grain , red rice, wild rice, arborio etc . Some of it stays like metal pellets for a good 20 mins. If you cooked a risotto for less than 20 mins it would be like eating the vomit of someone who swallowed shrapnel.

Please recommend a rice cooker.. I'd love to get a good one.

Rice cooker. Sorry but its just a game changer.

This.

Mine’s a Zojirushu 3 cup model and I love it more than my washing machine.

viques · 30/03/2024 23:37

I do the Jamie Oliver way. Twice water to rice (basmati) by volume. Boil water, add rice, stir, lid on, turn heat down to lowest. 10 minutes, no peeping.

RamblingAroundTheInternet · 30/03/2024 23:38

Simplest way to do long grain or basmati rice is put into a large pan, give it a good rub around and rinse a few times until the cloudy water is less cloudy. Soak in clean water for around 30 mins (I prep the rice first and leave it to soak while chopping veg/putting meat on). Pour out cold water from rice (my pot has a lid with a lip that rice doesn’t fall out of), cover with double height of rice with boiling water from kettle. Boil fast until rice has risen up to the top of water. Simmer for 5 mins. Turn heat off. Stir in a few knobs of butter. Put lid on it and leave it to steam for 10-15 mins or until rest of food is ready. Always get perfect rice.

Well yes, they lie. Have you ever actually cooked a “serving suggestion” portion? It takes way longer to cook than they say and you need way more than they say! Micro rice is the way forward…..but one pack of micro rice does NOT feed two people!

Microwave rice is disgusting.
Rinse your rice, 1.5 cups of water to 1 cup of rice, add salt, bring to boil, cover and cook on lowest heat for 11 minutes, switch off. Fluff up with a fork, put the lid back on and wait 5 minutes and it's ready.
It's not difficult, a lot cheaper and tastes so much better.

Use a ratio of 1 rice to 2 water.

Put rice and water in a pot.
Add salt.
Bring to boil.
Cover loosely.
Turn down heat to simmer.
Set timer for 15-20 minutes.
Rice will be done.
Fluff with fork.

Works for all varieties of rice.

IloveAslan · 30/03/2024 23:51

You could have mentioned it was brown rice in your opening post........

I very much doubt the instructions said 10 minutes for brown rice! The instructions on my packet say simmer for 25 minutes after it has boiled.

Mothership4two · 30/03/2024 23:52

I've not had a problem with brown rice cooking times but presoak and rinse and rinse with boiling water afterwards.

DS 'cooks' himself microwave rice - I think it smells/tastes vile.

Yes this rinsing before and after is not always popular but is quite important as rice is high in arsenic. Methods that absorb all the cooking water are problematic in that sense.

whats with all the arsenic?! 😂😂😂

FFS I swear this site gets weirder and weirder 🤣🤣🤣🤣

whats with all the arsenic?

Well it's a dangerous substance in rice (absorbed when it grows). I thought it was widely known. That's why I always soak/pre-rinse/post-rinse mine. It's a health risk. Not sure what's particularly funny about it?

Calliopespa · 31/03/2024 00:36

Lots of food actually has trace amounts of arsenic as it’s in soil and groundwater but the way rice grows means it has higher levels. It’s nothing to get overly hysterical about ( rice has been a staple food for many countries), but it’s better to rinse before and after and cook in copious amounts of water ( about 6 x water to rice) rather than absorbing all the cooking water. This reduces the arsenic. Over the longer term higher arsenic levels can contribute to cancer risk it is thought.

pickledandpuzzled · 30/03/2024 19:45

I put basmati in a 1l jug with enough water to slightly more than cover.

Microwave 10mins
Let it rest.

Fluff and serve. Perfection every time.

Similar. Except I work with volume. I do a water/rice ratio of around 5/1, and 10 mins for the amounts I usually do. I buy the same stuff from the same shop too, which might help.

Slightly different for different white rice, and wholemeal is twice as long. I got a nice rubber tub for microwaving different grains that came with all the ratios and timings for each, and they're bang on. The lid has holes for draining excess water easily, when necessary

Best bit about microwave is consist heat and time, it can't stay on too long cos you're distracted or on the loo 😁

It's probs out of date rice and you've done it wrong.

Anyhoo. My kids left home eons ago and there's only 2 of us so we just
get microwave rice now.

Nevermind91 · 31/03/2024 02:05

Avoid rice labeled 'quick cook' or 'easy cook' as these take forever and generally taste awful.

NeverNameChange · 31/03/2024 02:10

30 minutes?? There's something wrong 😳

Wash the rice first then 1 part rice to two parts hot water. Add the rice to the water, bring to a boil, put the lid on and turn the heat as low as possible for 15 minutes. Do not remove the lid under any circumstances until the 15 minutes is over. It's never failed me.

anareen · 31/03/2024 02:17

I'm so confused now from these comments 😅

I do 2 cups of water to one cup of rice. Chicken bouillon in the water. Once it boils I bring it to a simmer for 18- 20 minutes. I've had gummy rice a couple times but it always comes out fine to me.

HollyBerri · 31/03/2024 03:41

Rice cooker - honestly game changer. Perfect fluffy rice every time.

Yellowroseblooms · 31/03/2024 04:07

I just use ordinary white rice rinsed and put it in the microwave with tiny bit more than double the quantity of very hot water. A cup of raw white rice takes 13 minutes or so with occasional stirring. If it not quite done but dry I add a bit more water and give it a couple more minutes. It tastes like ordinary rice. It tends to clump if not rinsed though.

Exactly. Especially if you're giving it to children.

That reads as incredibly patronising. No one is "hysterical"

I read this and made up my own mind.

Love my rice cooker...it's so easy

VeryStressedMum · 31/03/2024 07:25

Soak the rice or at least rinse it til clear but cooking basmati rice in 6 times the amount of water?! I'd rather take my chances with arsenic than eat rice cooked like that Grin
