To think rice manufacturers should tell the truth

Boiling some rice. Says 10 mins. It's been on a boil for 20 and still not done. FFS this is why I buy microwave rice. Just needed to rant. They lie on the packets

I never understood why these are necessary. Microwave bowl, cup of rice, cup and a bit of water. Microwave for 14 mins. Done.

14 minutes at what wattage?

MaybeDonkey · 30/03/2024 21:01

No problem with rice and to the person worrying about hoiking big bags of rice up onto the counter, you don't, you use a mug and scoop it out. The Really Useful Company make big storage boxes that are food safe.

If we are talking oven chips, then they are swines, more swinish than rice. Never brown within the allotted time, in fact some never brown at all.

PonyPatter44 · 30/03/2024 21:02

I've now read the word arsenic so many times it has lost all meaning. How have India and China got to billion+ populations if they're all dying from arsenic poisoning?

I buy rice in the big 5kg or 10kg bags because we eat a LOT of rice. The bag just goes in the cupboard. I cook it in the steamer because it's easy and I never mess it up. If I cook too much, what we don't eat just goes in the freezer and gets used for fried rice.

You don't wash your rice???

Nope!

Add oven chips to that OP

i'm with you on this.

Meowandthen · 30/03/2024 21:15

People actually choose to eat that pre-cooked rice that you microwave? I tried some once and it was disgusting. Far better and cheaper to cook your own.

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 30/03/2024 21:17

Bumpinthenight · 30/03/2024 21:13

Nope!

It will be full of arsenic

Personally I cant stand buying in bulk like that, I dont want the house to replicate a cash and carry

Where on earth do people store stuff like this, plus big bags of anything have a tendency to spill all over the place.

Do you not have cupboards in your house? 🤔

JanglingJack · 30/03/2024 21:22

See I boil my rice until it's just cooked, drain then leave a tea towel over while it rests to absorb the steam. 12 mins approx. 20 minutes it must be gloop.

Microwave rice is horrible, it's like plastic.

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/03/2024 21:22

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 30/03/2024 20:48

It reabsorbs all the arsenic that way

Well, I don't eat rice often, and I use white rice for speed so I'm not too worried.

BoilingHotand50something · 30/03/2024 21:23

Wtf is this about arsenic.

I am clearly killing my family. Basmati rice, no rinsing, straight in saucepan, add boiling water (not measured) bring to boil, turn down and cook for 10 minutes. Drain. Serve.

Or get a rice cooker and kill the family that way instead. I didn’t think I needed one. Then I got one.

TotHappy · 30/03/2024 21:23

Ah, the arsenic...
Brassica absorb arsenic too. You should probably be rinsing your cauliflower rice too.

I can't do mine on the hob because mum always did it in the microwave and it's the only way I know.

800w microwave. 1 small mug of rice. 2 small mugs (same mug) of boiling water from the kettle. Pinch of salt, all in a Pyrex dish. Cover with a plate, microwave for 13 mins. Always done.
Rinse before for fluffy rice, don't rinse if you want sticky rice.

WellThatEsculatedQuickly · 30/03/2024 21:24

Buy a rice cooker. No effort, PERFECT rice.

TotHappy · 30/03/2024 21:24

This makes enough for a family plus leftovers though so if you want it quicker, half a mug of rice, 1 mug water and about 7-8 mins

BobbyBiscuits · 30/03/2024 21:24

It depends on the type of rice, but 10 mins seems quick. When I do white basmati rice I add one cup rice and 1.5 cup boiling water and simmer with lid on. It usually takes about 15 mins to cook and absorb. Brown rice seems to take ages! Maybe upto half an hour.
Packets of everything seems to lie about length of time. Especially chicken you bake in the oven, nuggets, strips etc. Always practically raw after cooking time! Seems like it could be dangerous.

CHEESEY13 · 30/03/2024 21:27

Same problem as regards wholewheat pasta - takes forever. Al Dente? More like extra chewy, and then some!

WellThatEsculatedQuickly · 30/03/2024 21:29

@LadyMonicaBaddingham I relate! It was my uni flatmate from Hong Kong who introduced me to the rice cooker. It makes amazing rice. Worth every single penny.

Womblingmerrily · 30/03/2024 21:30

Seriously, someone has a slightly unhealthy obsession about arsenic.

Chill out dude.

tkwal · 30/03/2024 21:32

Did you let the water boil before you added the rice ?

nettybud · 30/03/2024 21:32

For white basmati I always rinse well then soak for a few hours then boil in water about double the volume of the rice with the lid on for 8 minutes. Comes out perfect every time.

Andthereyougo · 30/03/2024 21:33

To cook it even quicker put in a pan, 3/4 fill pan with water and leave to soak for a few hours or even overnight. Strain, rinse and cook in fresh water . Cooks in about half the time.
Crossed post with @nettybud .
Rice contains minuscule amounts of arsenic and soaking is thought to reduce this.

Blueey · 30/03/2024 21:33

What rice are you cooking? White basmati rice is always ready waaaaay more quickly than I expect it to be. Oven chips on the other hand... best to start them the day before.

I don't cook basmati rice in the faffy way everyone says you should. But it's always lovely separate fluffy grains 😎

LaughingCat · 30/03/2024 21:33

Idontknowwhattodo78 · 30/03/2024 19:44

Well yes, they lie. Have you ever actually cooked a “serving suggestion” portion? It takes way longer to cook than they say and you need way more than they say! Micro rice is the way forward…..but one pack of micro rice does NOT feed two people!

Whaaaat? One Tilda’s Brown Basmati and Quinoa feeds my OH and I with leftovers.

I’m a micro-rice gal, @Partypoppers , and proud of it! Life’s too short for all that rinsing, boiling and fluffing, and the clean up’s quicker. Microwave rice for the win! Gotta be decent quality though - Ben’s is mushy and Aldi’s own brand was inedible. Tilda’s is the way forward fo sho.

TBOM · 30/03/2024 21:34

I’m Asian and lived in SE Asia for 5 years for work. We eat a lot of rice. Two things. We all pre soak rice for hours and then rinse before immersing in water for cooking. The second thing was a revelation to me when I moved to SEA. Cook in either a microwave or a rice cooker rather than on the hob. Either will do. Fast and easy if you have pre soaked grains.

Brown rice is hideous though. No idea whether it works for brown grains. And no inclination to try it out 😂

Wow, a small roast chicken must feed you both lunch and dinner for a week too?
