To think rice manufacturers should tell the truth

Boiling some rice. Says 10 mins. It's been on a boil for 20 and still not done. FFS this is why I buy microwave rice. Just needed to rant. They lie on the packets

1.5 parts water to 1 part rice.

Bring it to the boil, lid on and turn it down to a gentle simmer. Leave for 12 minutes, take off the heat and let it stand for 10.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2024 19:56

Oven chips always need longer than the bag
I buy ' boil in the bag' rice
It comes out perfectly cooked

A million people will now pile on to say get a rice cooker...but seriously, get a rice cooker 😄

Honestly don’t think I ever got anything other than perfect rice when I had a rice cooker

BrendaSmall · 30/03/2024 19:59

Microwave rice cooker, 8 minutes for 1 cup of rice and 1.5 cups of water 🤣
perfect every time

StormySpanielz · 30/03/2024 20:00

I’m shocked (not really) at all the people buying tiny portions of micro rice in this CoL crisis age. Get a mega bag from the Asian section of your supermarket. Lasts a year for about a tenner.

GucciBear · 30/03/2024 20:02

Rice is not manufactured?? It is a natural grain.

xsquared · 30/03/2024 20:03

Unless you eat a lot of rice often, you dont need a rice cooker, as it will just clutter up your kitchen if that's all you'll use it for.

If you're cooking basmati rice, put it in a regular saucepan, rinse it in a couple of changes of water, then fill it with water until it's around 1 inch or 1 knuckle above the rice. Turn on the hob and let it boil for 10-15 minutes. Turn off the hob and let it rest for a few minutes and use a fork to fluff it up and separate the grains if you want.

Brown rice I allow 24 hours.

3-5 working days in my house 🤣

UnimpressiveUsername · 30/03/2024 20:06

American long grain rice? I can believe you. Basmati rice is a 10 min job and much nicer.

Plmnki · 30/03/2024 20:07

Rice isn’t manufactured. Just saying.

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 30/03/2024 20:11

I always read these threads and wonder if my rice is actually bad - I just boil some water, plonk rice in, leave to simmer for the amount of time on the packet (stirring occasionally), drain, eat. Always turns out fine 🤷‍♀️

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 30/03/2024 20:14

Maybe I need to reduce my water volume and rice cooking time. I usually do 18 minutes. I do double volume of water to rice, bring to boil, reduce to really low simmer with lid on for 18 mins, then leave it steaming off the heat for a few more minutes. I think it comes out fine, but im now going to experiment.

Microwave rice is awful.

I love brown rice but it does indeed take a lifetime :)

"Rice manufacturers"??? Rice is a natural product, surely? You rinse, add water - not too much - boil and steam....

soupfiend · 30/03/2024 20:22

One mug of rice. 1.5 mug of water (make sure the mug is straight up and down and isnt wider at the top or bottom or the ratio will be out)

get boiling, as soon as its boiling turn the heat right down to the lowest setting, cover tightly and DO NOT TOUCH IT.

After about 10 mins have a look, if it is still moving about/wet, do another couple of mins and so on, until all the water has evaporated, then keep the lid on, off the heat, fluff up

Perfect. and dont forget to salt it.

Apparently it has arsenic in it that way as well but its apparently good for the complexion (19th century style anyway)

Mrssheepskin · 30/03/2024 19:39

Don’t try brown rice then…

Mine always ended up looking like a sugar puff...gave up buying it.

Personally I cant stand buying in bulk like that, I dont want the house to replicate a cash and carry

Where on earth do people store stuff like this, plus big bags of anything have a tendency to spill all over the place.

This! Soaking the rice before hand and then rinsing it is meant to reduce the arsenic

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/03/2024 20:29

You're right,

'Rice manufacturers should tell the truth'

Today's it's rice, tomorrow it will be pasta and then, God forbid, potatoes.

This Governent has been completely shoddy and shirked it's responsibilities on starchy foods ever since they got in.

Enough is enough, I say, we need a General Election now! Let's not wait until.the water has boiled away.

pickledandpuzzled · 30/03/2024 20:29

I’ve got a rice box, like a massive Tupperware for my massive bags of rice. We probably cook a kg rice a week so it doesn’t hang about.

Honestly, in a jug in the microwave couldn’t be easier- don’t cover it. It just cooks itself.

I dont bother with that. I like the glow in the dark look.

I forgot that another thing I used to do (as I dont eat rice now really) is fry off the rice before adding the water, that resulted in really good rice.

I tend to eat bulgar now or freekeh

Springchickenonion · 30/03/2024 20:32

Yabu for boiling rice. It should be on a low simmer! @soupfiend has it right!!

Those big bags are about 5 or 10 kg, what box fits that inside and where is it, it will be heavy and enormous. Fine if you have some sort of massive larder space.

Astariel · 30/03/2024 20:35

What are you doing that your rice is not cooked?

That said, why are you paying any attention to the packet instructions?

If you want utterly foolproof rice (that does not require you to have the ability to get the proportions right!): wash the rice thoroughly, then pour over lots of boiling water (add salt if desired - it isn’t always), boil for 10 mins (not violently - obviously), drain and return to the pot, put a lid on (a clean tea towel and then a lid is even better) and leave for 5-10 mins to steam, fluff up and serve.

The rice will be cooked after 10
mins. The sitting in the pan and steaming bit just ensures it’s never claggy or anything awful like that.

Or… get a rice cooker. I love mine.
