Boiling some rice. Says 10 mins. It's been on a boil for 20 and still not done. FFS this is why I buy microwave rice. Just needed to rant. They lie on the packets

Personally I cant stand buying in bulk like that, I dont want the house to replicate a cash and carry

Where on earth do people store stuff like this, plus big bags of anything have a tendency to spill all over the place.

I store my big bags of rice in a cupboard. It’s all fine. House doesn’t look like a
cash and carry.

A million people will now pile on to say get a rice cooker...but seriously, get a rice cooker 😄

Absolutely. Had a Malaysian flatmate at university who introduced me to the wonders of the electric rice machine and I have never looked back!

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/03/2024 20:38

Rice in layer at bottom of pan, water to twice the depth, bring to boil and simmer until there’s no water layer above the rice, turn heat off and put lid on. Leave till all water absorbed. Works for me every time. And it doesn't take 20mins.

Cheeesus · 30/03/2024 20:39

We have this and it’s great https://amzn.to/4alM1g8

It’s onion recipes that lie to me. The time it takes fry them to golden brown.

Newsenmum · 30/03/2024 20:40

This is crazy! Mines always done in less if anything. I don’t like it sludgey though.

Add oven chips to that OP

Oven chips are carcinogenic if cooked how people actually want them cooked

And it comes in a plastic pouch and it's extremely expensive.

I wouldn't have a rice cooker as I don't cook rice every day and it would just take up space. I cook basmati rice the way @MereDintofPandiculation describes and it always turns out fine.

CorvusPurpureus · 30/03/2024 20:43

One mug rice into two mugs boiling salted water, 7 minutes (cover, turn it down so it doesn't boil over).

Another 7 minutes off the heat. Sorted.

I had a rice cooker & it was great, to be fair, but I haven't felt the need to replace it once it went to Silicon Heaven.

susiedaisy1912 · 30/03/2024 20:43

I have a microwave rice cooker it's fab. Rinse the rice several times before cooking

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 30/03/2024 20:47
  1. Soak your rice overnight – this opens up the grain and allows the arsenic to escape
  2. Drain the rice and rinse thoroughly with fresh water
  3. For every part rice add five parts water and cook until the rice is tender – do not allow it to boil dry.
  4. Drain the rice and rinse again with hot water to get rid of the last of the cooking water.
  5. Serve your reduced-arsenic rice – it’s as simple as that!

It reabsorbs all the arsenic that way

Rice takes 10 minutes once boiling, then turn off the heat and let it steam for at least 5 minutes (or use a rice cooker.)

I always read these threads and wonder if my rice is actually bad - I just boil some water, plonk rice in, leave to simmer for the amount of time on the packet (stirring occasionally), drain, eat. Always turns out fine 🤷‍♀️

If your rice is wet when it's cooked... You've fucked up. /Uncle Roger.

YANBU OP.

See also frozen chips or any other potato cooked in the oven.Hmm

AdoraBell · 30/03/2024 20:54

It’s never taken 20 minutes this cook white rice for me. Is the rice you are cooking white or brown rice OP

WittiestUsernameEver · 30/03/2024 20:55

Bumpinthenight · 30/03/2024 20:45

I do the Delia method.

Vegetable oil to fry off one mug of rice. Two mugs of boiling water and leave.

You don't wash your rice???

Mrssheepskin · 30/03/2024 20:55

Crumpleton · 30/03/2024 20:23

Mine always ended up looking like a sugar puff...gave up buying it.

I bought it once to try and be healthier thinking it was like white rice. Ruined our dinner as took bloody ages to cook which I didn’t realise so I chucked it and never bought it again 😆

mitogoshi · 30/03/2024 20:55

@soupfiend

We get through a 5kg bag brown rice in 2-3 months, well worth buying in bulk

I never understood why these are necessary. Microwave bowl, cup of rice, cup and a bit of water. Microwave for 14 mins. Done.
