to not understand why people spend money to pollute their homes with pointless chemicals?

scent boosters, to go in laundry, air fresheners that squirt puffs of pollutants at you - the tv is full of adverts for these things, so presumably someone is buying them. I just don't get it though. Loading your family's home atmosphere with a load of unnecessary and unpleasant air pollutants, and paying for the privilege? Why?

@iwafs maybe we're just not miserable and enjoy nice smells!

I'm assuming you don't use perfume or deodorant either

I don’t use perfume or deo.

Hate the smell of it all. I’d prefer to smell bo or dog.

concernedchild · 30/03/2024 21:14

@iwafs and there it is.

You're happy to walk around stinking to prove a point

crumbledog · 30/03/2024 21:14

They are awful and give me migraines. Catching the faint whiff of a nice smell is a pleasant experience, being hit in the face by a wall of artficial smell is not.
I can’t see how sitting in a confined space inhaling all those toxins can be good for anyone, regardless of any testing that says otherwise.

It isn’t proving any point. I don’t like artificial perfumes.

and why do you think i stink if I wash with soap?

i meant I’d prefer someone else to smell of bo rather than laundry scents that sting my eyes and give me a headache.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 30/03/2024 21:09

Yes, you’re right. It’s not so much the ‘chemicals’ as ‘pointless’.

I’m unsure what a pointless chemical is. If it does the job of creating a smell that someone likes it’s hard to see how it’s pointless.

I think that we might all be able to find chemicals/substances that are seemingly 'pointless' to us, if we try hard enough. I doubt many chemicals are absolutely pointless though.
OP clearly thinks many scented chemicals/products are pointless (and harmful and toxic).

water and human beings are not really air pollutants

I was about 10 minutes ago. 💨

@iwafs BO is disgusting. If you're walking round stinking then you don't really get a say

Doublechocolatemuffin · 30/03/2024 21:21

I think they smell nice but I'd rather not breathe in chemicals, especially now I have children in the house. I use all natural cleaning products, no air fresheners, no laundry scents etc. I occasionally use essential oils and that's it.

coldcallerbaiter · 30/03/2024 21:21

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 30/03/2024 20:33

What is the correct way to use the word ‘chemicals’, and how does it differ from incorrect use?

As far as I know everything - solid, liquid or gas - is made of chemicals. But I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve misunderstood all these years and some chemicals aren’t chemicals at all.

People here are being deliberately dumb by saying water and air are chemicals. Right we know, but it’s the context. Food could be called chemicals but you wouldn’t eat soap, bleach or engine oil because they are just chemicals too, and therefore just the same…..

It is not just lavender oils, there are tons of natural oils for sale vanilla, grapefruit, lemon, orange, Clove, sage, rosemary, cinnamon, rose, sandalwood, jasmine, mint…

The chemically cleaners and scents are different, they do not come from the same natural sources.

I avoid the fake scents and go for the oils. I do use bio washing powder and that has a scent in it, but no fabric softener. The only exception I use is bleach, as it removes mould and deep cleans.

takemeawayagain · 30/03/2024 21:22

They give me a terrible headache and make me feel pretty ill. I could never go into Lush. I guess some people have a much lower sense of smell though, laundry detergent smells disgusting, really artificial and chemical but so many people seem to love it and think it smells 'clean'.

Yes of course I get a say, it’s an open forum.

i will repeat that smelling of BO or dog is better than the poison in laundry boosters. And make no mistake, it is poison. Anyone who voluntarily ingests it is foolish.

concernedchild · 30/03/2024 21:23

@iwafs you're actually barmy

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 21:23

I agree with every word op EXCEPT for not liking scent boosters! I make my own cleaning spray out of vinegar, I even make some of my own toiletries so am far from the kind of person you are thinking of overall... but I love scent boosters and won't give them up!

Fine if you think that. Time will educate you otherwise.

I’m happy living my life scent free and washing in soap.

Polishedshoesalways · 30/03/2024 21:25

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 21:26

This thread makes me think of a mum I know who has stopped brushing her child's teeth with toothpaste and literally just puts water on the brush 'because fluoride is harmful and is chemical waste'. Poor kid already has cavities. Inexplicably she also lets the child paint her nails and do all sorts of other similar things. 🤔

concernedchild · 30/03/2024 21:26

@iwafs personally I enjoy smelling clean

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/03/2024 21:26

You think it’s okay to stink? FGS woman use deodorant. You can even buy unscented ones, or use one of those crystal ones.

Or keep away from everyone else as no one wants to be near you. 🫢

You realise that those aren't the only options though, right?
I don't use laundry boosters but I also don't stink of BO. Soap is a thing. Deodorants are a thing.
