to not understand why people spend money to pollute their homes with pointless chemicals?

scent boosters, to go in laundry, air fresheners that squirt puffs of pollutants at you - the tv is full of adverts for these things, so presumably someone is buying them. I just don't get it though. Loading your family's home atmosphere with a load of unnecessary and unpleasant air pollutants, and paying for the privilege? Why?

It's safer to buy the scent booster scented wax melts, loads of businesses do dupes of them in soy wax
It's a huge fire hazard and they're not meant to be burned

love fairy scent boosters! My laundry smells amazing.
I also love Zoflora, wax melts, plug ins, reed diffusers….
it smells nice and it smells clean

Me too, love them, smells of fresh washed babies and all things clean, i even burn them in my oil burner.

ERM.. the fairy unstoppables say not to heat ocer 30 degrees C. It doesn't say don't melt/burn them because I assume they thought people wouldn't be that silly

Please stop doing this - it's a huge fire risk.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/04/2024 12:35

I hate them, they smell fake and disgusting. I have a pure essential oil diffuser I might put on for an hour if the house is in a fug and if it's not freezing I'll just throw open the windows.
The only chemical I use in my house is the cat pee neutraliser as my older cat is getting old and has a tendency to pee on things when she is asleep. But I have a good upholstery cleaner to use also.

So long as you are this worked up about everything that is damaging the environment and causing problems for people with allergies, etc. then that's fine.

Are you?

I can spray/burn what ever i want in my own home, thank you.

Was that a name change fail?
I thought I was addressing a different poster.

Clearly opening windows helps keep places fresh, but sometimes more is needed to clean stubborn/persistent odours!

plain soap, vinegar, and baking soda in various combinations will clean just about anything.

vinegar is my go-to smell fixer
the briny smell dissipates quickly

Are you suggesting people dunk their dogs in this solution 😂

no, I suggested those products clean the home and remove smells in general. Even vinegar and baking soda can be used as air fresheners in their own ways.

clean your dog by giving it a bath with a dog safe shampoo. For the dog’s own good, I would expect it to include as few additives as possible including being fragrance free. For my cats, I use the same body wash I use on myself. It’s perfectly safe, low-foaming, and easy to use.

Why are you bathing your cats? Confused

water and human beings are not really air pollutants

You haven't had to sit next to my repugnant smelling boss in a tiny office. I feel like dousing him in zoflora!

mathanxiety · 01/04/2024 16:08

@Ponderingwindow - unless there's something seriously wrong with your cat, he or she can self clean very effectively.

Soaps and detergents can harm cats.

I don’t bathe them often, but haven’t you ever had a cat get into a mess that had to be cleaned off? Run through paint? Had a child cover them in yogurt?

Really?! Unfortunately someone spilt milk in my car boot looking at you mother

I didn’t realise until I got in the car and wondered what the awful smell was!

I’ve used bicarb and white vinegar in generous amounts and the smell hasn’t even faded? Also used my vax spotwash.

Are they as good at cleaning as everyone makes out because I’m having no joy. 🤯

I do have a new tee freshener to hang in there though. 😉

Vinegar and baking soda (bicarb) is one of those kitchen cupboard myths. They will clean, but not very well. And as a deodoriser they’re hopeless - although you do get eau de chip shop for a bit, if that’s your thing.

Vinegar’s mildly acid and baking soda is mildly alkaline, so if you mix them you just neutralise both. And each on its own is pretty ineffectual.

AncientBallerina · 01/04/2024 19:49

Im absolutely with you OP. I can’t stand any scented household items but most people on here seem fine with them. I can still smell whatever is being covered up but mixed with the artificial smell. Not a good combination.

LavenderPup · 01/04/2024 20:14

As to the scented candles/wax melts vs essential oils, my asthma and allergies don’t react to natural pure essential oils. They do react to manmade chemical scents. I wouldn’t visit anyone that had them in their home. I can’t even talk to someone that has strong perfume or deodorant on. Allergic asthma is awful, oh and add I can’t buy anything second hand as they will have been washed in normal washing powder.

Pets can get really sick from scented products and even some essential oils are toxic to animals.

YANBU
Terrible for you, full of carcinogenic chemicals and microplastic. All to smell like cheap synthetic scent or ‘destroy 99.9% of bacteria’ which is an unnatural and unhealthy way for humans to live anyway.

No. If something gets in your car just paper towel it off. Use soap if you must.

Do not bathe your cats! That's awful and unnecessary.

My cat had Ibd so gets poop on herself often. I use baby wipes.

how are baby wipes ok for a cat but not a nice bath?

do none of you have cats that steal baths when you try to run one for yourself?

I didn’t tell people to mix them.

those of us who have no choice but to use basic soap, vinegar, and baking soda to clean have perfectly clean houses. It just takes a bit of elbow grease.

vinegar is good getting rid of odors and helps get a nice shine on things

baking soda is just a mild abrasive, mix it with a bit of water

QuaintLemur · 02/04/2024 04:07

I have used sodium percarbonate as a cleaning agent for years. It's much cheaper than branded products and works better - it's oxygen bleach and one of the main active ingredients in Vanish. It's non-toxic and bio degradable. A scoop in the washing machine gets out nearly all stains without bleaching, as it's not a chlorine bleach. I use it to clean loos, kitchen sink, garden paths, the floor, amongst other jobs. My house smells clean. I really don't like room scents, they smell artificial, make me feel breathless, and in the end, they're just covering up other smells and making the manufacturers wealthy and contributing to landfill.
