to not understand why people spend money to pollute their homes with pointless chemicals?

scent boosters, to go in laundry, air fresheners that squirt puffs of pollutants at you - the tv is full of adverts for these things, so presumably someone is buying them. I just don't get it though. Loading your family's home atmosphere with a load of unnecessary and unpleasant air pollutants, and paying for the privilege? Why?

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 30/03/2024 21:27

I have an air freshener in the bathroom above the cats litter tray for obvious reasons, but no others in the house (you stop smelling them after a while).

I'll occasionally have fresh flowers (freesias smell lovely) but the windows and doors are open every day to air the place.

Nothing nicer than freshly dried washing from the line though, no scent booster needed.

Spinninggyro · 30/03/2024 21:28

I have asthma and many of these perfumed things trigger an attack. Most perfumes and aftershaves have the same effect. I agree with the OP, these chemicals should be avoided. Why would you let your children sleep in scented bedding or have it on their clothes. Sprays and diffusers are just as bad

Doublechocolatemuffin · 30/03/2024 21:30

@KeinLiebeslied54321 thanks for that piece of information but I'm a scientist so I know what chemicals are 🙄

SparrowFeet · 30/03/2024 21:36

Pointing out the misuse of the word 'chemical' is getting almost as tedious as correcting grammar on this thread. I think we all know what PP's mean.

A scientist who would rather not breathe in chemicals? 🙄

It's mildly less tedious than people using a specific scientific term wrongly.

Oh bore off OP, each to their own. Live and let live and all that

thomasinacat · 30/03/2024 21:40

Agree OP, can't stand the artificial smell of the plug-ins or air fresheners, and they do affect my breathing, especially car air fresheners, which inevitably fail to conceal the fact that the car hasn't been cleaned properly.

They aren't natural and contain a raft of ingredients pumped into the air you are breathing. It's a no-brainer that this can't be good for your lungs. Definitely wouldn't use them if you have pets. They are not cleaning the air, they are masking smells.

I also use lavender oil, but believe it or not there are actually other essential oils if you don't like lavender. I just open windows regularly throughout the house to get fresh air circulating. Also don't want to think how much landfill waste these things are creating.

Portakalkedi · 30/03/2024 21:42

Agree, OP, there's no need for all that artificial, and in some cases toxic, scented crap if you clean and ventilate your home.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 30/03/2024 21:42

@thomasinacat being 'natural' doesn't necessarily make something better and being 'synthetic' doesn't necessarily make it worse. That said, plug-ins stink!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 30/03/2024 21:43

A scientist who can't comprehend that people like diffent things..... ok!

No degree here but get we are not all the same, therefore make different choices in life.

It's the same as everything else that is bad for us.

Alcohol = bad but people like the taste/feeling they get from it.

Ditto smoking,

Ditto fried food,

Ditto UPF,

Etc.

We all mostly know what's bad for us.

We therefore choose what to do with that knowledge, heed or ignore.
Choice being the operative word.

MzHz · 30/03/2024 21:40

Oh bore off OP, each to their own. Live and let live and all that

But that's the point isn't it?
The harmful chemicals people are pushing out isn't letting people live - it's harmful and most likely leading to earth deaths -even if it's just one asthma death it's still rather off that people would
Accept that for a smell

What do you come on for then?

People here are being deliberately dumb by saying water and air are chemicals. Right we know, but it’s the context. Food could be called chemicals but you wouldn’t eat soap, bleach or engine oil because they are just chemicals too, and therefore just the same…..

It is not just lavender oils, there are tons of natural oils for sale vanilla, grapefruit, lemon, orange, Clove, sage, rosemary, cinnamon, rose, sandalwood, jasmine, mint…

The chemically cleaners and scents are different, they do not come from the same natural sources.

I avoid the fake scents and go for the oils. I do use bio washing powder and that has a scent in it, but no fabric softener. The only exception I use is bleach, as it removes mould and deep cleans.

Bingo! I knew we’d get to natural v artificial/unnatural/chemicals.

There are a few more on the thread following this one.

There’s nothing inherently bad about organic or inorganic chemistry.

I really don’t think anyone’s being ‘deliberately dumb’.

The multitude of air freshener scents have been around way before Mrs.Hinch.

Yes, but wasn’t as widely used until she came on the scene

Yanbu
Why would you want to breathe all those chemicals in?🤮 What is wrong with lavender oil if you really need to scent air?

Lavender oil is toxic for cats.

Allfur · 30/03/2024 22:15

I don't know what a scent booster is

mrsbyers · 30/03/2024 22:16

I hate scented laundry and air fresheners but I do like a natural essential oil diffuser

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 30/03/2024 22:17

Catsmere · 30/03/2024 22:15

Lavender oil is toxic for cats.

Would lavender scent stop them coming in my garden, without harming them of course?

Needtofixmyageingskin · 30/03/2024 22:18

tomorrowisanotherdate · 30/03/2024 19:35

well, it might be your opinion that it smells nice, but objectively, it cannot smell "clean". It is contaminated, and smells contaminated. Maybe you like the smell, but you can't call it clean

She can say it smells clean. Some scents do have a clean smell to them. Who made you the judge of how people experience smells?

Pickingmyselfup · 30/03/2024 22:19

They smell nice, or at least they do to the people using them.

My house smells like pets, particularly rats but because they are sensitive I can't use any scents at all so I have an air purifier and hope nobody is offended when they come round.

I picked one of the kids up from their friends last week and their house smelt lovely with some sort of fragrance. I was very envious but not enough to stop me keeping my furry potatoes.

Everything is bad for us and the environment these days so people just want to live their lives how they see fit.

AllTheChaos · 30/03/2024 22:21

I love a scented candle! Have to be careful because of my asthma, but frankly given my elderly, smelly pets, without the candles my home would definitely not smell as nice 😂

I confess that I really enjoy the smell of ammonia. Lovely clean smell.

Made in a factory though. So bad.
