To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.

You only asked. You did so politely.

You are not being unreasonable.

CatkinToadflax · 30/03/2024 17:39

It was probably the wife’s sandwich.

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 17:34

Figs?!

I think that's because some little wasp burrows in and lays eggs in figs or something. So I guess technically a veggie would be eating meat if they ate a fig with wasp eggs in it?

I'd think that'd be more of a 'vegan thing' though, since don't some veggies eat eggs?

This is irony, right?
The polite thing would have been to not even ask.

MadAntonia · 30/03/2024 17:43

Expecting him to let her have the sandwich would have been entitled.

Asking politely is not entitled.

Oooh hadn't considered that possibility

SherrieElmer · 30/03/2024 17:46

Jesuschrist, the fucking cheek of you to ask for that. It you have opted to be a vegetarian that is you and your problem. Do not make it somebody else's.
Shameful.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 30/03/2024 17:47

I love that you had the balls to ask but shouldn't have phrased it like that, like many PPs I'm not a vegetarian but don't eat supermarket meat sandwiches. If I had been hesitating between two different ones I wouldn't mind giving up the one you asked for.

Btw supermarkets should be taking notes on how many of us non-veggies refuse to eat their cold meats and make some changes 🤔

Asking politely is not entitled.

Perhaps if they reached it at the same time, but asking once he already selected it is definitely entitled.

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/03/2024 17:54

The woman's reaction was quite OTT. That said, I wouldn't have asked a stranger to change his/her sandwich choice.

I do eat meat but I will hold my hands up and say I am very particular/fussy about meat and anything pre packaged. I'm not fussy in that I don't have a restricted diet, I love a wide variety of foods but I am particular about certain combinations/meat textures etc.

I realise this sounds odd and it probably is, but, point is, if I was buying a sandwich in a shop, I would not choose a meat one. Chances are, I wouldn't be able to eat it due to aforementioned issues.

I would have bought rolls/cheese slices in the situation described.

That said, I very rarely buy a ready made sandwich.

Oldtigernidster · 30/03/2024 17:55

Even if he didn’t want a different sandwich there was no need to be rude to you.

Ot would not have bothered me if u had asked me.

Same.

I can’t imagine being like some posters here being so offended over someone simply asking and to go as far as yelling at a stranger over asking is mental to me.

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 18:02

What's the point of this thread? Pretty much 100% of the posters have said you were being unreasonable and yet you still think you were in the right / reasonable and defending your position. Pointless.

BirthdayRainbow · 30/03/2024 18:03

I would have said that's ok and given it to you.

JMSA · 30/03/2024 18:04

It's no big deal, OP (despite some of the outraged responses 😂).
You asked, he said no. The woman shouldn't have reacted like that though.

exerciseshmexercise · 30/03/2024 18:05

Why are you superior with your need for the sandwich being because of philosophy? I don't understand that.

steff13 · 30/03/2024 18:07

ToRecordOnlyWater · 30/03/2024 13:12

@Whatevershallidowithmylife What is in them that would make them not vegetarian? I’m veggie and always used to have them. They’re not vegan obviously but are vegetarian unless I’m missing something?

Maybe the cheese? Not all cheese is vegetarian.

MadAntonia · 30/03/2024 18:08

‘Perhaps if they reached it at the same time, but asking once he already selected it is definitely entitled.’

I think it’s ok to ask for something, provided you’re polite and okay with a refusal. After all, he might not have minded.

Of course, it should also be okay to say no.

I think it’s the fact that OP is a vegetarian that makes the difference to me. The alternative for her would have been to go hungry.

If she’d been angling for the nicer sandwich, that would have been different.

HollyKnight · 30/03/2024 18:08

I would have assumed, by him picking the only non-meat sandwich, that he didn't want a meat sandwich.

Grapewrath · 30/03/2024 18:09

I’m vegan
Yabu and proper weird. I would never

Crazycrazylady · 30/03/2024 18:14

But mortified for you op. I can't believe you asked a total stranger for his sandwich !

Everythinggreen · 30/03/2024 18:16

Some figs are still like that, most are vegan now but you have to research to be sure.
Another recent development though is almonds! Because of the increase in demand, many places have started farming bees so if someone is vegan for ethical reasons, they really shouldn't be eating almonds anymore.

Bushmillsbabe · 30/03/2024 18:16

I have to admit that I have done something similar for my child in an aiport shop, there was only 1 option she could have due to medical need, and I was extremely apologetic, and she had eaten everything I had brought with me due to flight delays (we always travel with lots of snacks due to challenges with getting things she can eat, but I failed to factor in a 6 hour flight delay).
But asking for it because you have made a choice not to eat meat - absolutely a choice a respect, but still a choice was a bit cheeky. Equally the other lady didn't have to go crazy

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 30/03/2024 18:17

Just because I eat meat doesn’t mean I eat meat at every meal time.

YABU and entitled.
