Excusing my burp?!

determined43 · 28/03/2024 23:19

I always say excuse me after I burp - I generally only burp out loud at home.

I have noticed my husband constantly saying excuse you, after I burp. Even if I have already said excuse me. He makes a big deal of saying it.

I pointed it out and asked him why he's doing it when I've already done it, he said it's polite for him to do it.

I disagree and think if he's saying it to me it's rude, like he's making a point of excusing me because I haven't done it myself. But I always do.

I would never dream of excusing someone else out in public. I say it to my children to remind them to excuse themselves but never anyone else!!

AIBU to think he is being rude or am I thinking too much of this?

It’s annoying him and he probably finds it gross, which is why he’s making the point every time.

I would find it gross too. I have digestive issues myself but amazingly manage not to gross out my DH and he does the same. I don’t want to see my romantic/sexual partner as a belching farting windbag 😖

I had a colleague once who was a great one for the "oooh, excuse youuuuu!" But she was a fucking arsehole, so there's that.

You burped and farted at work?

Janehasamane · 29/03/2024 09:39

Surprised at the folks who cannot control their farts and who can’t silently burp. Never met anyone like that. People walking around farting and burping loudly with no control . Seldom see it out in public. Never in work or meetings, social events, so it’s news to me some folks have no control .

I do feel sympathy though, that must be awfully embarrassing at times, particularly at work if you sit and fart and belch with no control

Some people have medical conditions

underthemilky · 29/03/2024 10:07

@vanillawaffle

Yeah you can hold a fart in until you're somewhere more appropriate

If you are coeliac, have crohns, IBS or are menopausal or pregnant you really may not be able to it sometimes just erupts with no warning.

Yeah I addressed that later. Sorry to those who can't. It was a flaw in my unconscious bias to not consider those with bowl conditions and I apologise profusely and will do better

Well yes I said that earlier, clearly we are not discussing folks with medical conditions.

That's in sex strictly with the lights off territory that is. You do know you fart in front of family while you kip don't you? Bodily functions have a habit of not caring.

I don't have the habit of farting or burping in front of family members. And neither the people in my family. And I despise people who do. They are disgusting individuals..

Minion21 · 29/03/2024 11:27

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2024 07:26

I don't have any particular respect for any royal family, but in my case, farts come out when they want to, no matter who is in the room.

Of course, I try to be discreet about them, but with a burp it can't be hidden as your upper body moves. OP's DH will see that she is burping even if she controls the sound.

Burps are so harmless anyway. Why would anyone get upset about them?

Farts are more disgusting, yes, but burping is disgusting too. If you are able to hold on your farts or burps in the office, for instance, you are clearly cabaple of being discreet in private. If you are not, it's simply because you don't value your partner's opinion much.

I don't even know where to start with this! 😂

You are not able to reply maybe.

I've never met people who can't control themselves in public and constantly burps or farts. I think this thread is populated by the rudest people in the world.

It's not rude if you just can't!

With burps, when people burp discreetly with no noise, you can still tell they're burping!
Also, burping is really not disgusting as the poster above claims.

Mamoun · 29/03/2024 17:32

@Minion21
Agree with you entirely.
Seriously who do you hear burping in the supermarket? On the tube? In restaurants?

Dewdilly · 29/03/2024 17:35

You shouldn’t be burping in public, or at all. Your DH shouldn’t say excuse you, though. That’s a bit passive aggressive. But you are the rude one here by burping.

Mamoun · 29/03/2024 17:36

OP's been a bit quiet. I hope this thread will get her to review her opinion on burps!

Couldyounot · 29/03/2024 17:39

Chitterlina · 29/03/2024 08:36

You burped and farted at work?

Not me, no, although others did. But this wasn't just for that. Sneezes, coughs, anything would produce this wildly exaggerated reaction. Goodness knows why

PotatoPudding · 29/03/2024 17:42

Minion21 · 29/03/2024 06:25

Not in front of your partner or other family members.

I have IBD and don’t even know a fart is coming until it’s arrived. There’s literally nothing I can do about it but I am not prepared to live in solidarity confinement just so no one else is around for it.

Caswallonthefox · 29/03/2024 17:47

I have always excused myself when burping, even when no one is around. Fortunately I've never had someone do what your husband does. If I did I'm fairly sure I'd still excuse myself.
As for farting, I am taking tablets where they are a side effect, so I frequently gas myself out and weirdly I never do it in public.
