Excusing my burp?!

determined43 · 28/03/2024 23:19

I always say excuse me after I burp - I generally only burp out loud at home.

I have noticed my husband constantly saying excuse you, after I burp. Even if I have already said excuse me. He makes a big deal of saying it.

I pointed it out and asked him why he's doing it when I've already done it, he said it's polite for him to do it.

I disagree and think if he's saying it to me it's rude, like he's making a point of excusing me because I haven't done it myself. But I always do.

I would never dream of excusing someone else out in public. I say it to my children to remind them to excuse themselves but never anyone else!!

AIBU to think he is being rude or am I thinking too much of this?

sounds like you’re giving him the ick…

Not always 😳

Very occasionally you might not be able to hold it, true. But this should be rare. If it happens regularly, I. would question my partner's respect towards me and the entire relationship. You won't be constantly burping or farting around a member of the Royal Family. I demand the same level of respect.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/03/2024 06:36

@TheSolstices haha, I don't eat anything weird, I promise. I guess it's to do with air going into your stomach. I do talk a lot while I'm eating...might be that? If I did it in front of anyone not my family then I'd be much more subtle of course. Some people burp more than others I guess!

Mamoun · 29/03/2024 06:37

Seriously why would you regularly burp in front of your family at the table ?
So unnecessary, rude, disgusting! Are you a baby?
I do burp and fart like everyone but burping is (i) rare and (ii) can be silenced.
This puts me off and I find it a huge turn off whether coming from a man or a woman.

ElaineRaige · 29/03/2024 06:38

Maybe he's embarrassed you behave like a pig and wants to draw your own attention to how uncouth you are. HTH xx

AllTheMiniEggs · 29/03/2024 06:45

Are you burping really loudly?

If so, why?

Trickabrick · 29/03/2024 06:58

I’d assume he’s put off by your burping and this is his way of telling you. Your OP says you generally only burp out loud at home which indicates you can control it in other settings but choose not to around him. Treat him with the same manners you treat others would be my suggestion.

Newuser75 · 29/03/2024 07:13

I also can't remember the last time I burped.
I'd find it awful if my husband was regularly doing it in front of me. I think it can totally be held in.

Yeah you can hold a fart in until you're somewhere more appropriate

I can't!

I agree. You can burp with your mouth closed too.

PoochiesPinkEars · 29/03/2024 06:31

Sounds like he's admonishing you after every burp, which is a dick move.

This.

I've never heard 'excuse you' to mean 'you're excused' as the first poster said. It's usually an admonishment to someone who didn't say 'excuse me' like saying 'thank you' when you've held the door open for someone who didn't say thank you, something I find really passive aggressive.

I don't have any particular respect for any royal family, but in my case, farts come out when they want to, no matter who is in the room.

Of course, I try to be discreet about them, but with a burp it can't be hidden as your upper body moves. OP's DH will see that she is burping even if she controls the sound.

Burps are so harmless anyway. Why would anyone get upset about them?

whyismysoupcold · 29/03/2024 07:27

Just excuse yourself as it clearly bothers him. It's an easy fix. I do the same thing to my kids.

But she does! It's in her OP!

Yes. I would get the ick with a partner who burbed a lot and out loud. Doesn't matter that you're at home. I'd find it very annoying and unattractive.

I don't even know where to start with this! 😂

Doingmybest12 · 29/03/2024 07:38

Either he's saying that in a warm way but I guess you'd not have posted if this was the case.
Or he's fed up of you burping around him and he's trying to say that in a passive aggressive way.
I wouldn't want someone burping around me routinely even if they say 'excuse me'. Talk to the chemist if you have excess wind.

Minion21 · 29/03/2024 06:25

Not in front of your partner or other family members.

That's in sex strictly with the lights off territory that is. You do know you fart in front of family while you kip don't you? Bodily functions have a habit of not caring.

vanillawaffle · 29/03/2024 07:42

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2024 07:23

I can't!

Fair enough. Some people can't. I stand corrected -( because if I sit down I might fart)

I imagine they are taught from a young age how to suppress wind

RightOnTheEdge · 29/03/2024 07:49

I would think the same as you OP. I've only ever used or heard "excuse you!" In a sarcastic way.

Couldyounot · 29/03/2024 07:52

I had a colleague once who was a great one for the "oooh, excuse youuuuu!" But she was a fucking arsehole, so there's that.

JPGR · 29/03/2024 08:11

He is obviously finding your ‘loud burps’ annoying.

RightOnTheEdge · 29/03/2024 08:11

If you say he's often not in the same room as you though when he says it, then you must be doing it loudly and that is horrible.
