at being suspicious that my neighbour has pinched my dd's comfort toy

dd started nursery last wekk and since then has been inseperable from a cuddly bunny. it was a gift from a friend when she was born. dd was holding it when we left the flat this morning but when we got to nursery - spot was gone. i retraced steps to car, heded straight home, checked the 50 paces we woudl have walked to the car and inside on teh starirwell. no sign. i knocked on teh neighbours doors to see if they had seen it. knocked on teh only flat with kids and enquired to be told no. then their dd walked to the door with a bunny that looked remarkably like spot. i said - it is exactly like that one, to be told that their dd had had it for years. now - i am suspicious as i know the original one was bought in finland and not commonly available over here. in my paranoid state i am mightily suspicious that they have got dd's comforter.
bar calling them liars and demanding it - i dont think there is much i can do. i have rang my friend to see if she reckons they are available to buy and she is trying to remember the name of the small craft shop in tampere finland where she got it!
arghhhh, annoyed at myself for not paying better heed to dd and spot in my haste and stress this morning.

I would knock on the door again and ask to see their toy on the pretence of seeing if it has a label sewn on so that you can contact manufacturer to get replacement.

Then when you have it in your hands, have a sniff to see if it smells of your daughter IYKWIM.

If it does, run.

3NAB · 28/03/2008 14:25

I have a similar situation where I am sure my DD left her cuddly from babyhood at a neighbours but they can't find it. It is also irreplaceable.

Taweret · 28/03/2008 14:28

I don't think there is much more you can do with the neighbours - apart from having a confrontation and calling them liars, as you say.

It is a good idea to ask to see the label though, and take a picture if you can.

When you have, post the details on here, and we'll try and help you find a replacement Spot.

Heated · 28/03/2008 14:28

Put up some 'wanted' posters of Spot?

MeMySonAndI · 28/03/2008 14:29

like the "run" suggestion, already praying it belongs to your dd. It would be very traumatic to run out with another kid's comforter...

But ask about seeing the label, that's a good idea, even if it is just to get a replacement...

dd is only 11mths.

ok - i am off downstairs with my camera to see if their bunny would be picked out as our spot in an identity parade!

i think the mum could have me in a fight so i may have to play dirty if it comes to blows!!

Put dog shit through her letter box

alicet · 28/03/2008 14:41

pmsl at 'I think the mum could have me in a fight'!!!

What happened?

Bridie3 · 28/03/2008 14:42

Please let us know the outcome. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. If they have taken it, it's really, really mean.

allgonebellyup · 28/03/2008 14:45

oh lordy

its a cuddly rabbit. or something.

i reckon you should call 999. Pronto.

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2008 14:49

how weird!
Ask them for proof - does their bunny appear in any family pictures?
Seriously, i suppose you could ask them where they got it as you would like to replace C's

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/03/2008 14:55

do let us know what happens - really hoping you get to the bottom of it - it sounds like your instincts are right on this one

Flubdub · 28/03/2008 14:58

Oh the same kind of thing happened to my cousin - shes only little. At the airport, she had her teddy in a little kids suitcase, but some other kid picked it u as she had an identical one. Cousins mum didnt realise until they got home, and the other people refused to give the suitcase back!!!

Ds also lost a little toy when he was in his pram once, he was only about 9 months old, I was walking through a market that was just closing at the time, so there wernt many people around. I went back for it, but it had gone.

I dont understand why people pick toys up off floors for the dc's. If I saw a teddy on the ground, it would NEVER occur to me to pick it up and give it my dc's. You just dont know where theyve been.

Heated · 28/03/2008 15:18

Put up wanted posters with picture of Spot:

Much loved toy
Inconsolable child
Please contact .... if found

Then alleged criminal neighbour will be reminded of her evil ways every time she steps out of her front door .

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2008 15:22

They'll have to shave the rabbit's hare () and and make him/her wear dark glasses if there's a chance someone will recognise her from a poster

My2Weegirls · 28/03/2008 15:28

did she have you in the fight or are you still running??

callmeovercautious · 28/03/2008 15:29

Where are you, have you been arrested for kidnapping a toy?

Years ago I was out Shopping in Town and saw a LO drop a Tellytubby out of his pushchair. As I walked towards it to pick it up and run after them another Woman with a pushchair walked upto it and handed it to her DD. I actually spoke to her and said something along the lines of "I think that belongs to that little boy" and pointed at the other Womans back. Obviously I was told to F off. I did chase the first Woman and let her know but by then the thief had run off with it

readytoswiggin · 28/03/2008 15:44

Maybe she wants to breed from it (remembering past bunny thread)

fwiw, I name taped my dc's fave things after dd1 and another 18mth child came to blows over her 10" Po at a toddler group.

It did the trick a couple of months later when she was tannoyed in tescos to say Po was waiting at customer service

Bridie3 · 28/03/2008 16:05

I've lived a sheltered life! I've never come across soft-toy theft before.

Though I did once accept a 'lost' cheetah from the library. He'd been there, unclaimed, for some time and as we'd lost a tiger the librarian thought we could all bring each other mutual love.

meep · 28/03/2008 16:20

weeonion - what has happened - we're worried for you and cuddly bunny's safety!

I hope she's not in siege situation round at the neighbour's...

weeonion · 28/03/2008 16:31

sorry folks - i was off getting dd from nursery!
i went downstairs to the flat. dear neighbour is a bit of a tough ticket - we often have to sit through the noise of her unique style of conflict rsolution - ie screaming at the top of her voice at all hours. i know i am relatively well built but she is not the kind i would like to meeet up a dark alley way. knocked on teh door, camera in hand. asked, if not too much bother - woudl she mind me taking some snaps of their bunny as dd is pretty distraught and i want to put up some posters. her dd had conveniently gone out with her dad apparently so nope - couldnt get pics. i enquired as to where they got it, as it would be great to be able to get another one for dd, as it was indeed so so simialr to the one she had lost that morning. she said she coudlnt remember but it may have been asda.. aye right! no blows were exchanged as yet but i think she is lying through her 3 teeth.

i will go down again in a while.
oh lordy, it really is not woth all this for a bloody bunny! i am more het up that she may have pinched it. i am now eyeing up her washing on the line to see if there is anything i fancy.....

i have colle
