Does everyone but me love skiing?

I don’t really like skiing. I don’t hate it but I can think of a million other things I’d rather be doing. I’ve been about 6 times, can ski but have become less confident as I’ve got older.
I’m led to believe by everyone I ski with, that I’m an exception. That basically everyone absolutely loves it and the only reason people don’t go is because they might not be able to afford it.

So I was wondering out of pure interest, if you don’t go on ski holidays, is it only because of the price or other factors such as pregnancy/ work commitments - ie if you could, you would. Or are there others like me who just don’t really see the appeal? Is there anyone who has been and hasn’t absolutely fallen in love with it and would go at any given opportunity? Everyone I ski with and everyone I ever meet skiing seems to think it’s the best thing ever.

I’ve just returned from a lovely trip to the Alps but I wasn’t really into the skiing so I’m thinking that’s it for me now - but I'm being made to feel like I’m making the wrong decision and there’s something wrong with me!
I’m very interested to hear others options

I've been once, you had to get up really early, it's cold and quite hard work. Not my idea of fun or relaxing.

Never skied. It seems like a very expensive activity for what you get. But mainly I don't like going fast/being out of control, have poor balance, and am a coward, so it just really doesn't appeal. If I won a free skiing holiday I would give the prize to someone else.

Went once as an 11 year old. Hated it. As pp said, early starts. Alot of trudging about carrying equipment. Apparently very expensive. Worst family holiday ever for me.Just awful. Would only ever go back to Switzerland for the cakes and scenery.

Meh, all my favourite holidays involve arriving somewhere warmer than I left. 🤷

I’ve been numerous times - my kids and husband love it, my best friend thinks it’s the most amazing thing ever. I’d happily never go again. I’m not good at it and I think I’ve become more scared of hurting myself as I’ve got older. But ultimately whilst the mountains are beautiful and I’m a fan of the apres ski I could happily never ski again.

I have never skied in my life and I probably will hate it. I have dyspraxia and balance issues. Can't swim or ride a bike.

On a foreign exchange trip to France, we went to a ice skating rink. That was my only time I wore ice skates and couldn't stand up. Managed to walk around the perimeter of the rink holding onto the barrier.

I absolutely love skiing but haven't been in years as the prices are just extortionate.

Renee Zellweger Ski GIF by Working Title

Never been but wouldn't be for me. The thoughts of all that gear etc. Feel claustrophobic at the mere thought of being trussed up in layers. I'd be like Bridget Jones on the slopes.

I bloody love it but haven't been for ages as I can't afford it.

Honestly I love it. I learned to snowboard when I was 30 and though painful to start with, 20 years later and I go every year at least twice often for 2-3 weeks at a time.

I can understand why people aren't keen though - hard work and demoralising when learning, often very cold and actually quite scary (I still get the fear if I can't see much)

If you go and talk to people around the pool in a hot sunny country they will I am sure say they all love it and why would anyone not want to be there.
It is not surprising that people on a ski holiday tend to love skiing. But they are wrong to think that is what everyone enjoys doing.

I loved walking in the Alps, but never really saw the attraction of skiing.

Went twice (god knows why I was talked into second time!), hated every minute of it and nearly killed myself on more than one occasion. Never ever again

It used to be part of my job to take a group of around 100 ten year olds to the Alps for a week every January. I had the opportunity to have free ski lessons and to ski all week while the students were with the instructors. The lift pass and accommodation and meals all paid for. I tried it the first year in the job and hated it. Once I realised that skiing was not compulsory and I could ride the lifts, go for walks, sit in the restaurant and drink hot chocolate instead I started to enjoy ski camp week. In answer to the question, no, not everyone loves skiing!

My husband and children love it so I’m wondering if this is something I can maybe do rather than giving up the entire holiday. I love walking and love the alps in summer so I could maybe give winter walking a try….. And then I still get the Apres Ski (apres walking) bit 🤣

I've been on two ski holidays - one as a teenager with school and one a few years ago with friends.
I can take it or leave it tbh.
I'd say I am a competent novice and enjoy going down gentle slopes but don't want to go faster than that. I feel like I could get into it if I chucked a load of money at lessons, gear and lots of trips, but it is a lot of faff for something you do maybe once a year, unless you trek over to an indoor slope. I'd rather spend my money on going somewhere hot to swim and surf.

Absolutely zero interest in it, never done it and hopefully never will. I've married from a working class family into middle class and they seem to bang on about it and getting me to do it, so as a result I always have "a huge amount of work on" every winter and must stay put. I wonder how many more years I can get away with it. If it comes to it, the best I can do is to sit in a lodge drinking until it ends. It's nice that some people enjoy this sort of thing but personally why anyone would want to pay so much to fling themselves down an icy hill with leg braces on in some sort of injury lottery is beyond me.

That's my feelings about it in a nutshell.

I'd be fine with sitting in a lovely lodge with a massive log fire and looking out at the snow for a bit.

All the people I know who love skiing are the sorts that enjoy doing sport/ being active in their spare time anyway. I'm the complete opposite of an adrenaline junkie - I hate heights, going too fast and get nervous in icy/ snowy weather in the UK. Skiing is not for me.

I think DH would like it (he is more the first type of person) so I would go if he really wanted to and I would like to give the DC the opportunity to have a go. But I suspect it would be a very expensive spa break for me.

I hate skiing. Cold, hard, too high(!), hurts your legs/feet ankles etc etc.

We go on a ski holiday every year - I love it! DH & the DC/friends ski, I'm happy as a non-skiier. Lovely cosy accommodation, fab dinners, beautiful views, little alpine cakes, fabulous!

I do get 'ski rage' on the ski bus after about 3 days though, people not walking properly in stupid boots, dropping skis, hitting people with poles, clunking and clanking about - that bit drives me nuts!

I love it BUT I learned as a child and can barely remember the learning stage.

If I’d had to start from scratch as an adult I doubt I’d have bothered. I don’t like cold, getting up early or most exercise. But once you can ski well it’s really not hard work (well if you avoid black runs and off piste like me) and is a joy.

I have always been keen for DC to learn as children for exactly this reason.

You're pretty much bound to meet people who love skiing on a skiing holiday! Self-selecting sample.

I've been a few times, and wouldn't care if I never went again. Very high faff:fun ratio. A lot of carrying wet, heavy and awkward kit, in uncomfortable boots on terrifying ice, the claustrophobia of the bubble lifts, the braying poshos

vs

a few minutes of nice 'swoosh' once you find a blue run that isn't full of kids.

I could never eat breakfast because of the nerves beforehand, and would be knackered by lunchtime. Couldn't really be doing with the rather enforced fun of the apres ski either.

I think if you're fit and sporty, and have been skiing since a child and it has become effortless, rather than a constant battle of gripping an icy red run with your skis while trying not to cry, it might be fun.

Love it but with a very specific set of requirements- had to be ski in/ski out, no way I would enjoy taking a ski bus or dragging equipment around, hotel with an excellent spa m, excellent food, no queues (which rules out school holidays), extensive ski area, decent off piste. This makes it very expensive and rules out a lot of locations. But a full day of skiing, with a leisurely lunch in the sun in some mountain hut, last run on empty slopes in the evening sun in March, followed by a spa straight away and an excellent dinner - unbeatable. I know dedicated enthusiasts who will drive to the Alps, take a self catering chalet away from the slopes, get a ski bus at 7:30 to be the first ones on the lifts, take packed lunches etc. that level of enthusiasm and dedication is beyond me. I don’t ski as often now as the weather has become quite unreliable while the prices have doubled so going for a week to spend half of it indoors (even at a spa) has limited appeal.

I'm a very fit 58 year old. Been fit all my life. But I hate skiing. Spent a few months cross country skiing and that was tolerable because I was able to see the scenery in the country I was temporarily living in. But downhill? Forget it! Terrifying! Tried it. Hated it. Such a faff.
I once had a weird conversation with a ski fanatic who questioned whether I could be middle class because I hated skiing! The strangest exchange!
My children don't ski because I don't I feel I may have held them back in life!
