Does everyone but me love skiing?

I don’t really like skiing. I don’t hate it but I can think of a million other things I’d rather be doing. I’ve been about 6 times, can ski but have become less confident as I’ve got older.
I’m led to believe by everyone I ski with, that I’m an exception. That basically everyone absolutely loves it and the only reason people don’t go is because they might not be able to afford it.

So I was wondering out of pure interest, if you don’t go on ski holidays, is it only because of the price or other factors such as pregnancy/ work commitments - ie if you could, you would. Or are there others like me who just don’t really see the appeal? Is there anyone who has been and hasn’t absolutely fallen in love with it and would go at any given opportunity? Everyone I ski with and everyone I ever meet skiing seems to think it’s the best thing ever.

I’ve just returned from a lovely trip to the Alps but I wasn’t really into the skiing so I’m thinking that’s it for me now - but I'm being made to feel like I’m making the wrong decision and there’s something wrong with me!
I’m very interested to hear others options

I grew up going on skiing holidays and I used to enjoy them - but, as an adult, I’ve become less and less enthusiastic and can take it or leave it. If my DH and DCs were keen to go, I’d happily go too - but they aren’t and so there’s always something else I’d prefer to do.

I get what you mean, though - people can’t “get” that it’s not your thing. Last time I said the above to someone, he very accusingly asked “Ah, but have you been?”. To which the answer was, “yes - many times - I’m a perfectly competent skier but it’s not my favourite thing to do on holiday”. And he was utterly baffled.

All the people I know who love skiing are the sorts that enjoy doing sport/ being active in their spare time anyway. I'm the complete opposite of an adrenaline junkie - I hate heights, going too fast and get nervous in icy/ snowy weather in the UK. Skiing is not for me.

I think DH would like it (he is more the first type of person) so I would go if he really wanted to and I would like to give the DC the opportunity to have a go. But I suspect it would be a very expensive spa break for me.

Exactly this.

I hate exercise at the best of times and certainly don't want to spend my holidays doing it - other than a few gentle strolls.

Don’t mind skiing, but wouldn’t choose it if it meant missing out on another kind of holiday. It’s cold, often dark, you have to spend a lot of time queuing for lifts, you’re at the mercy of the weather, it really depends if your companions are the same level as you, apres ski is ok but not better than going out for a drink anywhere

And many of the other skiers are posh bores

CrushingOnRubies · 28/03/2024 22:26

Nah been skiing a couple of times but it's really not my cup of tea.

It's cold, it's centred around doing exercise, I'm not a fan of the chair lifts. Come home less rested than when I went.

I'm more a pool beach with a bit of culture in a nearby town type person

I like skiing but only if the following criteria are met:
No longer than 3 full days - half day at either end just about acceptable
Ski in Ski out hotel
I shouldn't need to be a millionnaire or sell my firstborn child
The mountain shoulud be quiet with lots of long wide blue runs so I can trundle down and enjoy the views.
Lovely hotel with a great spa and amazing views - real fire and plenty of cosy coffee drinking/book reading corners must be readily available
I will ski in the morning, have lunch on the mountain, ski to the hotel and then spa/swim/read until dinner. This is the only civilised way to have a ski holiday IMHO.

The only place I have been that ticks all these boxes is Palandoken mountain in Erzurum, Turkey. So it has become an annual thing for us and we enjoy it immensely

Are you me? I ski so i can drink rose and eat cheese in the mountain.

DramaAlpaca · 28/03/2024 22:46

I've been on a ski holiday once, over 40 years ago, it was a school ski trip when I was 17. I absolutely hated every minute of it and haven't ever wanted to try it again.

Moanranger · 28/03/2024 22:52

I am an ex-skier-
Pros - big endorphin rush, lots of exercise & calorie burning to off-set apres ski & rich food, lovely scenery & clear air, mostly.
cons - very, very environmentally unfriendly activity - travel, damage to alpine environment, water-sewage use in a fragile ecosystem,THE PUTTING ON OF BOOTS😱, cost, lethally out of control other skiers, lift queue rage, my knees are now shot, climate change means snow is unreliable.
So I sold my skis about 10 years ago. I have fond memories, but never again!
A couple of friends have been quite seriously injured by rogue skiers, usually lads with earbuds.

PeloMom · 28/03/2024 22:57

Don’t see the attraction of it. I live 15 mins away from ski slopes and about an hour and a half away from a major ski resort. Can’t be bothered with skiing although sometimes take DC.

IloveAslan · 28/03/2024 23:28

I have never skied in my life - and I can see a skifeld from my flat, and used to live in a town close to it! I certainly don't need to go on a ski holiday. Lots of people don't ski.

persisted · 28/03/2024 23:46

Went once as a teenager, extended family holiday. Hated it. I live in a small town in the UK where it is cold and wet for months. I am not going to spend a fortune on going to another small town where it is more cold and wet, to spend most of the day falling over. Baffled by it, I'll save my pennies to find the sunshine and interesting things to see.

Catsmere · 28/03/2024 23:46

Never skied, never wanted to. I don't live anywhere near any ski fields (I'm in Australia) and don't have the money to do it even if I wanted to. But skiing to me now always brings to mind Michael Schumacher's horrible accident. Even if I'd been interested previously, that would have put me off forever.

bluetongue · 28/03/2024 23:46

It’s love / hate for me. Love skiing but it’s so weather dependant. Nothing worse than spending a large amount on a ski holiday only for it to be ruined by not enough snow / too much snow / too warm / too cold (trust me, it’s a thing)/ too windy. Ski resorts also seem to be a magnet for all kinds of sickness from noro to Covid.

Chunkycookie · 29/03/2024 07:18

That said I still get a complete look of total shock from friends or other parents when I explain that I have absolutely no interest in skiing as if "I'm no longer one of them ".

God, how different our lives are 🤣 I’m up early reading this as I was woken up at 6am by my neighbour hanging out her window screaming at a bloke who she’s accusing of smoking all her weed and shagging her sister. I want to know people who bore on about skiing on the school run rather than hear them argue about which toothless oik is shagging who’s mate that week and how they are going to “batter” them. It’s like Jeremy Kyle in real life, I’d love to hear about skiing and tennis instead.

AWanderingMinstrel · 29/03/2024 07:57

DH and I started skiing together in our early twenties. We’re both sporty. All of our children have skied since they were young- far too good for us to follow them now, but we ski the mornings together and then DH and I go off on our own . It is expensive but as they are in the 20s and students/ early in career and don’t have a lot of money, we pay and we get family time together, out in the mountains. I still love skiing but don’t feel the need to spend the entire day on the slopes skiing- I hope I can continue for as long as possible.
