Does everyone but me love skiing?

I don’t really like skiing. I don’t hate it but I can think of a million other things I’d rather be doing. I’ve been about 6 times, can ski but have become less confident as I’ve got older.
I’m led to believe by everyone I ski with, that I’m an exception. That basically everyone absolutely loves it and the only reason people don’t go is because they might not be able to afford it.

So I was wondering out of pure interest, if you don’t go on ski holidays, is it only because of the price or other factors such as pregnancy/ work commitments - ie if you could, you would. Or are there others like me who just don’t really see the appeal? Is there anyone who has been and hasn’t absolutely fallen in love with it and would go at any given opportunity? Everyone I ski with and everyone I ever meet skiing seems to think it’s the best thing ever.

I’ve just returned from a lovely trip to the Alps but I wasn’t really into the skiing so I’m thinking that’s it for me now - but I'm being made to feel like I’m making the wrong decision and there’s something wrong with me!
I’m very interested to hear others options

I've never skied. It sounds expensive, uncomfortable, dangerous and a lot of hassle to me.

Ketzele · 28/03/2024 15:58

I've never been. It's not my idea of fun at all! Would quite like to sit in a warm chalet and stare out at snowcapped mountains though.

NovemberAutumn · 28/03/2024 16:01

I don't go on ski holidays because I have a bad back issue and cannot afford to fall over.

I am not from a country where skiing is a thing anyway. I have never stepped foot on a ski.

I'd go as i like snow and like the idea of sitting around a chalet waiting for everyone to come back and drink wine.

But truth is it's probably too expensive and I'd want to do something else with the money.

Utahthecat · 28/03/2024 16:01

I live near a lot of ski resorts and can ski so could go a lot. I'll go if there is good snow, nice weather and out of school holidays. Other than that, it can be a bit painful with all the crowds, the queues, the idiots on the slopes. I find it amazing that people spend so much money on skiing holidays. I hate the thought of sharing a chalet with a crowd of randomers. And I think there is a lot of post-justification: it is quite funny hearing tourists describe really shit snow conditions as amazing. .

There are so many amazing things to do in the mountains that don't involve downhill piste skiing, so if I were you I'd look to go to resorts with a variety of things on offer and let your ski-mad family get on with their own thing. I much prefer snowshoe-ing or cross country skiing and especially post-covid a lot more resorts are pushing these types of activities. The sporty locals I know tend to do ski touring in any case rather than piste skiing.

Caluse · 28/03/2024 16:05

I've never been and don't want to. I don't like being cold, I don't like wearing lots of layers, and I have a personal condition which grabs the knee bending involved would cause me pain.

I do ice skate but I don't want to ski. Holidays for me should be warm and full of interesting stuff like museums.

GoingOnHol · 28/03/2024 16:06

Never done it and probably never will!
It's an expensive holiday and if I have an expensive holiday I want guaranteed hot weather, I don't like the cold.

KreedKafer · 28/03/2024 16:09

Of course not everyone loves skiing. Most people have never been skiing at all.

BrieHugger · 28/03/2024 16:10

givemushypeasachance · 28/03/2024 15:13

Never skied. It seems like a very expensive activity for what you get. But mainly I don't like going fast/being out of control, have poor balance, and am a coward, so it just really doesn't appeal. If I won a free skiing holiday I would give the prize to someone else.

You are me. If I won the free holiday I’d take friends who ski and I’d get comfy in the nearest bar/cafe with a good book. No way am I strapping planks to my feet and hurtling down a mountain.

Sun, sea and sand all the way!

OldTinHat · 28/03/2024 16:12

I went ice skating at a rink once. I fell over a lot.

Pickingmyselfup · 28/03/2024 16:15

Desecratedcoconut · 28/03/2024 15:15

Meh, all my favourite holidays involve arriving somewhere warmer than I left. 🤷

Mine too.

It's the cold that puts me off the most but also because I'm uncoordinated and would definitely injure myself. Plus it wouldn't be relaxing.

I wouldn't mind a hiking holiday providing I didn't have to get up early and there were days where I could have downtime.

MaryShelley1818 · 28/03/2024 16:16

I wouldn't go if you paid me to go!
Just not for me.

Cantara · 28/03/2024 16:19

It's absolutely tedious, cold and a real chore imo! I've been twice to give it a chance and wish I hadn't, definitely don't see the attraction, I'd pay not to go on a skiing holiday.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/03/2024 16:20

I like being in ski resorts and the apres ski - but not skiing- I'm too clumsy now at 62 and petrified of breaking a leg etc -

I'm more of a see you later I will stay here with a book and a hot chocolate kind of person and see you via the chairlift for lunch etc!!

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 28/03/2024 16:21

Couldn't drag me to a ski slopes unless six figures or more were involved.

And yes, I've tried it.

Riverlee · 28/03/2024 16:22

Wouldn’t catch me skiing. Hate snow, ice, freezing conditions, having to put in lots of layers on etc

idontlikealdi · 28/03/2024 16:23

Love skiing but havent been since having kids, hoping to take them next year (FIL lives in a ski resort) but so far their response as been less than positive.

TM1979 · 28/03/2024 16:24

I went when I was 20 when I was working as an au-pair. I enjoyed it but haven’t been since. Can’t imagine going with kids. So much hassle and not relaxing at all.

marmite2023 · 28/03/2024 16:25

I’m obsessed with skiing but I’m really into sports of all kind. Played rugby for many years, have horses. im aware that that is the trifecta of posh sports, but I’m an adrenaline junky. I’ve grown up going to the mountains and the peace I feel out in the back country is like nothing else. What I hate is skiing on icy pistes with a million other people. Fortunately, we are mostly able to ski off piste and get away from everyone unless the snow cover is truly shocking or the risk is way too high.
But then I loathe beach/pool holidays and can never understand the appeal. I get bored and time passes so slowly! I guess it’s a combination of what you grew up with and what works for you as a family. We have already taken our 4 month old to the mountains and taking her again this weekend.

PinkiOcelot · 28/03/2024 16:26

I’ve never been skiing but it just doesn’t appeal to me at all. It’s on snow. I hate snow. It’s cold and wet. I like warm holidays. Lying around a pool or a beach. I don’t blame you.

JennyBeanR · 28/03/2024 16:28

There's absolutely nothing about skiing which I appeals to me. I'm not interested in it sport wise and I hate the cold. I also hate the idea of flying somewhere cold and mountainous. It's probably the exact opposite of what I desire! 🤣

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/03/2024 16:29

RoseberryT · 28/03/2024 15:28

My husband and children love it so I’m wondering if this is something I can maybe do rather than giving up the entire holiday. I love walking and love the alps in summer so I could maybe give winter walking a try….. And then I still get the Apres Ski (apres walking) bit 🤣

You'd have to be able to use crampons and it would be sensible to get some training in winter walking.

NotFastButFurious · 28/03/2024 16:30

Mayhemmumma · 28/03/2024 15:10

I've been once, you had to get up really early, it's cold and quite hard work. Not my idea of fun or relaxing.

yeah, basically this.
Also, i was really bad at it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/03/2024 16:31

I love snow. I also love the idea of knowing where my centre of gravity is with regard to my feet. I have never had the slightest urge to try skiing. Or golf.

Rainbowshit · 28/03/2024 16:33

I mostly absolutely love it.

It can however quite often tip into type 2 fun depending on the conditions.

I don't think I would enjoy it if I'd had to learn as an adult.

Lansonmaid · 28/03/2024 16:34

I absolutely love it and so do DH and grown up DCs. Went on a sun, sea and sand holiday once to Turkey and by day 2 were booking boat trips etc as lying by a pool was so boring. But each to their own. It would be a dull old world if we all liked the same things
