Does everyone but me love skiing?

I don’t really like skiing. I don’t hate it but I can think of a million other things I’d rather be doing. I’ve been about 6 times, can ski but have become less confident as I’ve got older.
I’m led to believe by everyone I ski with, that I’m an exception. That basically everyone absolutely loves it and the only reason people don’t go is because they might not be able to afford it.

So I was wondering out of pure interest, if you don’t go on ski holidays, is it only because of the price or other factors such as pregnancy/ work commitments - ie if you could, you would. Or are there others like me who just don’t really see the appeal? Is there anyone who has been and hasn’t absolutely fallen in love with it and would go at any given opportunity? Everyone I ski with and everyone I ever meet skiing seems to think it’s the best thing ever.

I’ve just returned from a lovely trip to the Alps but I wasn’t really into the skiing so I’m thinking that’s it for me now - but I'm being made to feel like I’m making the wrong decision and there’s something wrong with me!
I’m very interested to hear others options

No I also cannot stand it - I generally despise cold weather though and am not an early morning person so both of those reasons alone rule out skiing as being enjoyable. I don't enjoy the apres bars, the ones in Val d'Isere where I used to go to reminded me of student bars and all in all there is so little to like, for me. To each their own! I'm sure a lot of my choices of holidays would not be to everyone's tastes either.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/03/2024 17:31

I wouldn’t care if I never saw snow or even frost again in my life, so …..no.

Marchintospring · 28/03/2024 17:33

I’m scared of heights.
I never factored this in when I went skiing. It’s not the physical activity as much as it’s all very high up very steep slopes.
I prefer tobogganing frankly being closer to the ground.Or flatter surfaces

Also I bloody hate wooden ski chalets. Or tea houses in the Nepalese mountains. Or wooden cabins on river cruises. I want glass, chrome and a big infinity pool.

SockQueen · 28/03/2024 17:37

I love the mountains, love the snow, love my friends who I've been going with for over a decade, love riding up on a chairlift on a blue sky day. Actual skiing? Don't think I'd be bothered if I never did it again. I like cruisy blues or the occasional steep but wide red (in good snow) but get scared and miserable on anything more difficult.

Took the kids this year for the first time, and DS1(7) broke his leg, so I don't think we'll be going again as a family for a few years.

Chouquettes · 28/03/2024 17:39

Definately not alone.

LesLavandes · 28/03/2024 17:41

I hate it. Love the mountains but I am terrified os skiing

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/03/2024 17:50

I've absolutely never had any desire to try skiing, it doesn't appeal at all. Worst case, I'd hurt myself and be scared, why would I pay money for that?

A friend went for the first time and hated it, so went snow shoeing instead which was good apparently.

I went to uni with someone who went on a big family skiing holiday and a child in the party lost control, hit a tree and died, which was just awful. The risk of injury or even death is so far above anything that I'd be happy to do for fun.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 28/03/2024 17:52

We go every year and the last few years I am skiing less and less as I am getting more fear about falling over and breaking something - I'm definitely done by lunchtime and I'm a fairweather skier too so I don't ski in blizzards.

I love being in the mountains. Some are saying it's cold it's not really - you're dressed for it and it's often sunny and you're sunbathing on deckchairs. I'm way colder in this damp, grey country! We go as a family and it's one holiday where mine aren't on their phones constantly - they're out getting exercise and fresh air all day - I find it hard to replicate that on a beach holiday.

TobarnanGealt · 28/03/2024 17:54

No. I can ski, but am bored by it. The idea that everyone loves it is weird -- I hate heights, speed and have poor balance after a messy accident in my 20s. I was never going to love skiing.

Deadringer · 28/03/2024 17:58

I would be afraid I would break my neck, i also don't like the cold. My dh would like to give it a go, and friends would often say you should go, you could always sit by the fire and have a hot chocolate while he skis, er no, I can do that at home for free.

I’ve been numerous times - my kids and husband love it, my best friend thinks it’s the most amazing thing ever. I’d happily never go again. I’m not good at it and I think I’ve become more scared of hurting myself as I’ve got older. But ultimately whilst the mountains are beautiful and I’m a fan of the apres ski I could happily never ski again.

I could have written the same a few years ago! Kids are adults now. DH goes with friends and I save my holidays for other stuff.I ‘d get to the top of the slope and think what am i doing here? I actually paid to go through this? It’s beautiful though.

nkn2390 · 28/03/2024 18:22

I dont mind cross country but hate alpine. I never associated skiing with speed or injuries so dont understand why adult would throw themselves of mountains. Grew up in a cold country and lived in Switzerland for ten years. You can always tell when ski seasons starts when you see lots of young people hobbling on crutches on monday morning. Love mountains in winter, totally not bothered about skiing.

SuddenlyOld · 28/03/2024 18:54

When I was a kid jacko skates came out and all my pals would go to the steepest hill and go flying down it. Not me, scared the shit out of me. I don't even like cycling or driving down steep hills.

So no, I don't like skiing and I've never been tempted. I nearly died of shock when I learned about ski lifts.

Ditto snow boarding.

I would go to a ski resort only to see the mountains 😬

miserablecat · 28/03/2024 18:59

Virtually everyone in our town seems to go skiing - usually at half term. I've never been, it would be a stretch to afford it but as I am quite a wimp I'm not sure I'd like it anyway. The scenery looks beautiful though. (But I'm sure I'd be panicking and falling over too much to appreciate it!)

Kaftanesque · 28/03/2024 19:11

Not for me.Before we had children DH and I had several ski holidays - he was brought up skiing regularly. I gave it my best attempt and was reasonably competent. Then we did one holiday with 3 young DCs after a few years off and I hated it.Plus it was expensive relative to our other holidays and I disliked the rush to get us all kitted out and on the slopes for lessons .It felt like the school run again.Fortunately DH graciously agreed money was better spent on other experiences.I would have been happy for him to go on a lads trip but he never did.And I've never missed it.It didn't help either that on the last run of the last day I got wiped out by an idiot going far too fast on the last slope and damaged a knee ligament.

LovelyTheresa · 28/03/2024 19:13

I don't like it. I went once or twice with my school and hated it, I suspect I'd like it more now. I was also neurotic about injuries because I did ballet.

Shufflebumnessie · 28/03/2024 19:29

I have absolutely no desire, and never have done, to go skiing. I really don't understand the attraction in any way, shape or form.
The only skiing I've ever experienced was a trip to the local dry ski slopes with Guides. My parents had to force me to go, I hated every moment and broke 2 fingers due to damage to the slope (early 90s when H&S/maintenance wasn't a hugely important!).

NoraLuka · 28/03/2024 19:40

I’d love to go but it’s too expensive and I’d be scared of the ski lifts. I’m not scared of heights standing on a mountainside but those ski lifts where your feet are dangling about 20 meters from the ground look terrifying. I think I’d rather walk up the mountain.

I hope I do get a chance to go one day just to see what it’s like.

Ponderingwindow · 28/03/2024 19:40

I love the cold and the snow, but I have bathmophobia, so skiing is literal hell for me. I have tried it, more than once actually, because I try to work past my fears and because there is so much social pressure to ski, but I hated every minute.

Yes I’m never cold skiing. You have all the gear and the weather can be lovely and sunny. Bad weather seems to whizz through quicker. I feel colder here.

I also have two boys who do not like the beach so skiing all day is perfect for them.

I juts finish after lunch these days and take a day off in the middle.

FoodieToo · 28/03/2024 19:57

Love it . We ski every year . But like some posters above , there are conditions !

We only stay in pretty luxurious hotels, every meal has to be handed to me ( no self catering 😱) and the hotel needs a hot outdoor pool , saunas etc. !

So it's not just about the skiing !!

minipie · 28/03/2024 20:20

Oh I don’t require luxury but I DO require ski in ski out or very nearly. Not schlepping my skis and boots on a bus any more and definitely not carrying the kids’. I also only ski from March onwards as I like it warm and ideally sunny.

bunsnroses1 · 28/03/2024 20:27

Skiing is a very expensive trial of endurance. My kids love it though, and my parents are obsessed with it- they spend 3 months a year in the Alps.
For me it's like eating olives - objectively disgusting, but there's something very moreish about them that keeps me coming back for more.

Rosestulips · 28/03/2024 20:32

I get stressed walking in snow or ice as I’m scared I’ll slip so I don’t think skiing would be for me.
