Something needs to be done about drugs in UK

Drugs are killing healthy young people. How is it that a drug dealer is not tried as a murderer?

It's not limited to class. It could be your own son or daughter.

You know how many people in Singapore die from overdoses? Almost none, because drugs are actually illegal there.

There wouldn't be a heroin or crack section in between the beer and wine.

So if they were legal where would they be available?

0sm0nthus · 26/03/2024 17:43

This is what happens when you make something illegal, you generally make it more dangerous
and way WAY more lucrative, that's a MASSIVE incentive for the crims

PlumbersWifey · 26/03/2024 17:45

People make the choice.

Prescription only probably. You know, like most drugs already are. Weed, I'd happily have between the beer and wine.

Barbadossunset · 26/03/2024 17:50

So if they were legal, would the doctor have to prescribe them if the patient wanted them? Because if not then surely whoever wanted them would go to an illegal dealer.

I got treatment in prison. I was in for shoplifting food for my son. I got on a methadone script. I got our and put on a drug rehabilitation requirement. I got a lot of support and counselling. I was supported to start volunteering and eventually got a job.

no way did you get put in prison for nicking food. what sort of spineless puny dick shitforbrains judge put you in the knick for that?

Depends how it's done. Could make it prescription and only available for already addicted people from GPs or specialist clinics. Or if completely legal like alcohol, could have separate stores selling like the US states that have legalised cannabis.

In Victorian times we had opium dens. I assume these were similar to pubs but with opium instead of alcohol. Maybe that's an option. Adults who choose to take whichever drug they prefer are in a safe place rather than the streets or the family home. Maybe setup links or have some staff from support services available in the 'drug pubs' so people could access to support if needed.

Any thread that starts

'SOMETHING needs to be done' without a fucking clue of what, is a car crash thread waiting to happen.

Well do you currently go to the dr and just demand whatever you fancy? Legalisation reduces the number of new addicts and reduces the social impact of addiction. It's not going to eliminate it entirely. Even Singapore clearly hasn't, seeing as they are still executing people for drugs offenses.

This is essentially what Canada has done and the employees there are fed up and say its not had a positive impact.

Would be nice if rehabs were available the way they are in the US.

If it was legal then surely you’d be able to buy it like you buy legal drink and fags?
Why would legalisation reduce the number of new addicts?

They are. They were obviously better funded in the past, with longer, in-patient stays. Private is also available. It's been a while but the NHS treatment centre I worked in, we'd see people who'd used Clouds or Promis or whatever.

What we need, particularly for the nastier, new drugs, is long, funded, in-patient stays. Not day clinics and short stays. With proper supported, dry housing after. It's more expensive but it works better.

I looked for rehabs for my person but no NHS ones were available. They cost thousands.

The funding isn't there. Just like for every other health issue. And it's a terrible shame because I know some people who benefited from NHS treatment in the past (when it was better) and have gone on to make a world a much better place.

Short-term, stupid thinking.

Don't understand why my person couldn't be saved. I could've stopped it, I could have done something

Why would legalisation reduce the number of new addicts?

Why? Plenty of medication is legal but prescription only. Even fags and alcohol are restricted. Driving is legal, but only with a licence. Legal doesn't have to mean anyone can do it whenever they want.
Make it legal, they're will be far less illegal trade around. No money in it = no gangs selling it.

My bad. Didn't read post properly. Women get sent to prison much more than men, for things that men would never get sent to prison for. Have a read of this. www.nicco.org.uk/userfiles/downloads/5bc45012612b4-short-but-not-sweet.pdf

This is a very “motherhood and apple pie” argument. No one wants people to die from overdoses.

Your line of argument is a bit like saying: “I hate cancer”. Well, yes obviously.

You don’t, however, seem to be able to engage in any meaningful discussion about how to prevent drug abuse and addiction.

That drug abuse is bad is not up for debate really but if you can’t engage with the topic beyond the level of going: “Waaah, it’s all so shit we should ban it…. Oh wait,” you can’t expect to make any progress.

Do you seriously think no one has thought about this before?
