Ice cream and crisps are massively overrated

Is it just me or do crisps and ice cream get way too much food kudos?
I mean, they're OK, but there are loads of things I much prefer. DH and both DDs think I'm crazy and it's become a major talking point at home (in amongst all the deep discussions on politics and climate change of course).
Thoughts?

Not all ice cream is created equal though. Neither are crisps. What an odd post.

Only on MN:

OP: I like crisps and ice cream
Random: how odd

😆

savethatkitty · 26/03/2024 10:39

I love me a good handful of crisps.

Ice-cream, can take it or leave it.

Really not a fan of ice cream. I remember being constantly thirsty as a child and for some reason my parents would give us a cone or a choc ice rather than a drink or an ice lolly. That mljust made me thirstier. Can't get past the associated feeling of thirst.

Crisps - cheap ones are not worth it in this country. Got to be branded. Preferable Monster Munch.

Why on earth??? That’s practically neglect

BouleDeSuif · 26/03/2024 10:11

Ice cream - yes I'll give you that. But I will not hear a bad word said against crisps.

Same here! I just had two packs of Skips for my breakfast!

Snugglemonkey · 26/03/2024 10:49

I do not like ice cream. Or most desserts. But crisps....

DonnasShrugaleros · 26/03/2024 10:54

Proper ice cream deserves its status, none of that garbage you find in magnums, or mass produced supermarket crap (generally).

CommentNow · 26/03/2024 10:54

I've gone off anything artificial tasting like high sugar chocolate, ice cream or chilli flavoured doritos. I'd rather go straight to a higher quality source.

A switch flicked for me and suddenly I found it all quite unappealing when I thought of them as vessels for flavoured sugar or salt. Dont get me wrong, I love treats, I just suddenly got a strong preference for higher fat, lower added sugar food.

Using ice cream as an example, I like blended, frozen fruit "ice cream" which will still have a high natural sugar content or chocolate flavoured coconut icecream which will have a heavy natural fat content. But it needs to be strong and made with melted, high-cacao chocolate.

The more I cook at home, the more I like using fat and high quality ingredients for flavour instead of artificial sweeteners and sugar.

Fresh bread with a slab of salty butter over crisps any day.

Mercurial123 · 26/03/2024 10:58

I have a gelato maker, and it's awesome. Shop bought ice cream, not so much. Love crisps definitely not overrated.

Dweetfidilove · 26/03/2024 10:58

YANBU about the crisps (don’t eat them), but ice-cream is lush. Can’t wait for the time to warm up some more so I can be off down the seaside for a nice rum and raisins 😋

Galliano · 26/03/2024 10:59

Rarely do I do an ocado or Waitrose order without scanning to sharing pack of crisps aisle for new exciting flavours.
For a while I was completely obsessed with Guinness crisps. They were briefly in the vending machine at work then I was ordering boxes off Amazon as they were fairly hard to obtain! Currently like Tyrell's truffle ❤️

MaggieZe · 26/03/2024 10:59

Hmm, some very strong feelings here - for crisps in particular. They're all bitty and leave your fingers oily and thus phone screen all perma-smeary.

Certainly nowhere close to a lovely bit of warm toast and a perfect tea (or coffee)?

Actually, crisps in a buttered, soft, white roll are worthy of high respect. Just not crisps solo.

I will not eat ice cream, unless it is made with whole milk, cream etc. None of that reconstituted, skimmed milk stuff. I am not too keen on crisps, but will admit to having a thing for Lays barbecue flavour!

stayathomer · 26/03/2024 11:03

The world without crisps would be a dark place for me. In particular skips and hula hoops, wotsits and then crisp sandwiches containing spuddys/hunky doreys/tayto or king. Ice cream I generally love because I rarely have it, love a 99 or a calippo on a hot day!!

Hat tip for ordering boxes worth of crisps off Amazon. That's dedication to your art

Yeah ice cream is so overrated. Ice lollies and sorbets are much nicer.

But yabu when it comes to crisps. There's nothing better than nice posh crisps. A rare treat these days but the best treat, in my opinion.

MurderousCheekbones · 26/03/2024 11:09

Oh god those Guinness crisps! I had forgotten about those. Awesome stuff.

KirstenBlest · 26/03/2024 11:12

Crisps are overrated. They are rarely as nice as I think they'll be and make me hungrier.
Ice cream is usually great but sometimes isn't. I'd risk it though.

MustBeThursday · 26/03/2024 11:14

I'm not a massive fan of ice cream - it has to be hot weather for me to even consider it. I prefer custard if it's alongside a pudding. Although Italian gelato is immense!

I do like crisps though.

BouleDeSuif · 26/03/2024 11:15

Piper's crisps are the best in the world. No I haven't tried the whole world's worth of crisps, and I don't have to because the best would still be Piper's.
All crisps are worth it though. Lays Mushroom are good, Asda Extra Special salt and vinegar are MARVELLOUS (yes I'm shouting, not sorry) and you can't beat Tangy Toms.

MaloneMeadow · 26/03/2024 10:02

YANBU on the ice cream part - apart from real traditional handmade gelato, now that is what I call a treat. None of the artificially flavoured and coloured stuff

Crisps have always been and probably will always be my guilty pleasure!

Exactly this.

TabbyM · 26/03/2024 11:21

YABU proper locally made ice-cream is lovely and comes in odd seasonal flavours like pumpkin latte and sherry trifle. Cheap generic supermarket stuff not so much. Although Lidl's own Magnum type mint ones are pretty good.

Not fussed about crisps, will eat if they're there but seldom buy any.

KirstenBlest · 26/03/2024 11:33

Aldi ice cream is worth avoiding.

GasPanic · 26/03/2024 11:41

Eat a bag of chilli heatwave Doritos and then tell me they are overrated.

Aldi ice cream is worth avoiding.

They had some Finest or best range or whatever mini pots, blackcurrent, salted caramel, belgian chocolate etc that were absolutely fine.

I'm sure like most places though they have some bog standard stuff that is less desirable.
