Should I bin my friend's art?

Joyjazz · 25/03/2024 20:39

My friend painted me a picture. The sentiment was lovely but I really hate it. It's not my taste and not in keeping with my house. I keep it behind the TV and hang it whenever she comes to visit so I don't hurt her feelings as she is really proud of this piece and spent many weeks making it. I'm moving to a new house and I don't want to be carrying things that I don't like or want to my new home. I want to take the frame and bin the actual painting. She's a good friend and she is likely to visit and possibly ask where the art is.

AIBU to put the painting in the bin?

Say youre great Aunt Sally saw it and fell in love with it.... Or dont put any pictures up in your new home ( Yet ) untill youve purchased some sturdy HOOKS for Walls.

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 27/03/2024 22:26

Can't you say it either got damaged in the move or you think the movers nicked it or something similar?

OR

make her an even uglier, bigger piece of art and see where she displays it then mirror it

Sorry OP. Can't help.but think of this ep of Friday night dinner

Now waiting for all the posters with one braincell to think this, too, was posted by the OP and is the real picture.

Gagaandgag · 27/03/2024 23:09

Put it in a cupboard or behind the tv again and hang when she’s round. Can’t see why this isn’t a problem to continue with

Jeez, that's the stuff of nightmares not art. That's definitely due for an accident in the removal van.

It's Gladys from Friends 😂
Phoebe's legless "haunted" masterpiece who sloooooowly turns doorknobs when you're asleep looking for legs to steal 😳😁
So many comments thinking that poster was the OP, just why lol

I have always fancied this on my wall. (For any fellow oldies)

Disclaimer: THIS IS NOT THE OP’S PICTURE.

OMG, Mrs Mangel! ♥️😁

Rottweilermummy "Wow wasn't expecting it to be quite so awful"

The OP has not posted a photo of the picture this thread is about. Only pictures of paintings from sitcoms (in which someone had a similar dilemma) have been posted by other people.

Oh lol thanks for letting me know. I've not seen the episode of friends which others have said it came from, shame can't see real pic, i'm intrigued

The portrait on the left is amazing; but I think the artist may have been going heavily at the old dizzy water when they did the one on the right.

I immediately thought of Gladys and Gwyneth from Friends, but it seems like many posters haven't.

In fact, far too many don't bother RTFT.

Here's the clip to Gladys' first appearance.

Return it to her and truthfully say you love the sentiment but it just isn't for you. Destroying or throwing away something someone took a long time, effort and love making is unnecessary.

Beautiful3 · 28/03/2024 09:19

I think I'd say, I fancied a change in decor in the new house. So a few things have gone into the loft. You can bin it but don't keep the frame, because then she'll know.

OldPerson · 28/03/2024 09:47

You're going to have to steer this one.

The children never notice when we bin their art. Although with children, they're really happy when you fridge magnet it to a fridge.

They never seem to notice when you bin it, because you're too busy coo-ing over their next delight.

Your friend is obviously needy and has been raised by parents like me.

Let the picture disappear.

Put the replacement picture (if there is one) in the downstairs toilet.

Just say, it didn't fit anywhere else and everyone can see it in the downstairs loo.

If she paints another one, hang it alongside the other in the downstairs toilet.

Don't get diarhoea.

Find more - or less - artistic friends. The arty ones are not working out for you.

InterestinglyFine · 28/03/2024 10:17

She seems quite attached to it, so couldn't you just give it back to her? Just say you don't have room for it in the new house / it won't fit with the colour scheme; There are lots of good reasons why people don't hang paintings up on their walls: I inherited some paintings that I would love to put up, but I don't have room and they are currently just sitting around all over the place, which is a genuine shame

jac67 · 28/03/2024 10:56

Sorry but its awful, and understand why you dont want it on show, spare bedroom and show her once than put away, she may not even ask after you move.
Good luck

Has the OP posted an actual photo now then?

No.
Still isn't stopping umpteen people posting as if she had.
I've never known a thread like this one for the sheer number of confused posters. It's downright weird. 😕

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 28/03/2024 12:11

Is this it, OP? I agree that it's hideous and so amateurish; but I can see why you'd want to keep the lovely frame and re-use it for a better painting.

@MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique 😂

RLA1 · 28/03/2024 13:20

You can buy reversible frames.

Eshmee · 28/03/2024 13:20

Can you tell her that you have a friend/relative who really likes it and as you don't really have the space for it in your new place would she mind if you gave it to said freind/relative. Then either store or bin it? Telling her that someone else really loves it will make her feel good.

Kklasd808 · 28/03/2024 13:29

I think you have a good opportunity to get rid of the painting as your moving so you could tell her that it got badly damaged during the move, if she then says she'll do another one tell her no as you wouldn't want it to happen again.

Boobylicoous · 28/03/2024 14:15

Def keep it cos if you say it got damaged or lost you may get another one lol. 🎨 🖼

PossumintheHouse · 28/03/2024 14:35

Whatever you do, do not say it got damaged during the move. She'll either gift you a new one and you'll feel forever obliged to hang it, or she'll ask for the damaged piece - including that frame - to try to fix it. A waste of her time and a lifetime of anguish for you.
