To longboard to work?

DW worries a lot about what other people will think.

I turned 33 and was appalled at the state of my fitness. Ditched the car, ditched the heels for nice trainers, and started walking to work and everywhere else. A month and a half ago I bought a longboard. I used to be an avid snowboarder in my teens and this longboard has honestly been such a good purchase as I not only feel fitter but also actually find myself looking forward to the morning commute!

DW hates it. She thinks it's childish and that I should get a bicycle like "a normal adult". AIBU to longboard to work? I have no interest in bicycles and I don't see how long boarding to work is "too try hard". Confused

What on earth is a longboard?

Momstermunch · 25/03/2024 17:30

As long as you're not getting in people's way, why not? The main problem I would see with long boards on a commute is other people on the pavement and trying to avoid them.

leafybrew · 25/03/2024 17:32

Do it!

What's not to like?

My daughter longboards to work - as well as generally. She's 20

leafybrew · 25/03/2024 17:33

NB she's pretty good at snowboarding as well -

Dewdilly · 25/03/2024 17:33

yes, I did, but the OP could have just said skateboard rather than using specialist terminology which no-one is going to have heard of, and is going to piss people off.

MagpiePi · 25/03/2024 17:33

Yes! Do it!

Allfur · 25/03/2024 17:34

Or the op could just add a description in very few words

viques · 25/03/2024 17:35

You will be fine OP, just don’t wear your baseball cap backwards.

BreakfastAtMimis · 25/03/2024 17:36

I am TeamDW. I would think a 30-something skateboarding to work was a bit of a twat and an attention seeker. Just walk.

StirringUpHatred · 25/03/2024 17:37

I think you'd be OK on anything other than a unicycle. That's where my line is.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/03/2024 17:37

yes, I did, but the OP could have just said skateboard rather than using specialist terminology which no-one is going to have heard of, and is going to piss people off.

Sheesh, or you could have found the opportunity to increase your vocabulary, as opposed to feeling "pissed off" about the fact someone is expanding your knowledge.

How do you expect anyone learns anything if they have to stick to things they already know?

To answer your question OP, go for it. Life is too short to worry about what other people think about you.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 25/03/2024 17:37

My DSS longboards everywhere, he is 19 so I suppose more age typical but I don't see what's to get het up about it if you enjoy it and it's effective for your commute then why not.

Mercurial123 · 25/03/2024 17:38

So you'll be skateboarding on the pavement? If so, that will be annoying for other pedestrians.

midgetastic · 25/03/2024 17:38

Skateboard would have been easier to understand and I cba to google the difference

But not sure why you shouldn't - I mean as long as there is a route that is suitable - bike route rather than footpath for example

When I hear longboard I think of surfing. Couldn't figure out how on earth that would work on the commute.

Elvis1956 · 25/03/2024 17:41

No. Don't. That's a kiddies toy and your a grown up. (As said by me to the twat on Hammersmith High Road who ran into the back of my leg a few years ago)

Allfur · 25/03/2024 17:42

Few bossy posters on this thread telling people how to use mumsnet, jog on

Jackiebrambles · 25/03/2024 17:42

Go for it!l, nobody’s business.

Full disclosure I would judge you though, as anytime I see anyone over the age of 20 on a skateboard I think ‘oh do grow up’. I’m a judgemental old trout though.

veryawkwardohno · 25/03/2024 17:44

I feel like as long as you're being considerate about not getting in peoples way etc then what's the issue?
life's too short and miserable as it is, if travelling to work can be made into something you enjoy then go for it.

KreedKafer · 25/03/2024 17:48

Provided you're not being a nuisance, weaving around pedestrians etc, I really don't think there's anything wrong with longboarding and I really don't think it's up to your wife to tell you how to commute.

KidneyWarrior · 25/03/2024 17:49

I thought you were commuting on a surfboard 🏄‍♀️

mentallyilltotallychill · 25/03/2024 17:49

YANBU

I used to rollerblade to work and used to love it and was also something to look forward to. If again my commute permits it i will 100% be doing so again. Have a colleague who skateboards to work (in his 30s) its funner, cheaper, healther and quicker than walking

Springysusan · 25/03/2024 17:52

The more people who do it the more acceptable it will become, and I would love to see a world where everyone feels able to be authentic and travel in the way that brings them the most joy (so long as it's not at the expense of others obvs).

Please don’t skateboard / longboard in bike lanes. Or at least not in ones that are heavily used by cyclists. It’s frustrating for the cyclists and potentially dangerous.

(Sore point for me this week as there was one in my bike lane last week who was blocking the way of cyclists needing to pass, wasn’t going straight so was really hard to pass and nearly got knocked onto by bikes and also wove out into motor traffic erratically.)
