Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

I hope that you at least bought a coffee. . I very rarely eat in Macdonald's but it was so handy when my son was small to be able to access a safe, clean toilet in the city centre. However Macdonald's isn't a public toilet. I always bought something, even if it was just a coffee and a Macflurry.

Ha! Considering what MacDonald's do to the planet and people's health, functioning as a public toilet is the least they can do.

I take great pleasure in going there to shit and not buy anything.

I think some people's bodies are capable of delaying pootime splashdown and some not.

Dh could delay all day, often does on holiday etc. If I feel the urge I have about ten mins max to get that party started.

Grimchmas · 26/03/2024 08:43

RE the air freshener, my workplace has a tiny loo with no ventilation. I bought an air freshener for it recently because somebody has recently started shitting at work several times a day and it smells so bad I hold my breath when I go. I don't begrudge people for pooing at work- when you gotta go you gotta go - but Artificial Flower scent with a background of poo beats full on shit stink for me.

KimberleyClark · 26/03/2024 09:01

I normally go first thing in the morning and rarely need to at any other time of day, but if I did I’d have no problem doing so in a public or work loo. Holding it in all day is very, very bad for you.

StructuredColumn · 26/03/2024 09:02

It’s ‘poo’ in this country. Not ‘poop’. I think people are learning their language from YouTube videos.

If you don’t poo when you need to, it’s likely you will fart continuously until you have emptied your bowels. Surely that’s far more offensive for others?

The best time to poo is when you start to feel the urge. You should not try and push it out when your body isn’t ready. You should also not try and hold it in for prolonged periods. Look after your bowels.

I work in the NHS. With our extremely specialist expert knowledge, we know that people need to poo… We don’t comment on each other’s habits.

How would these ‘I’m scared to do a poo out of the home’ cope if they need to do a random stool sample at their doctors? If they have a potential issue?

I mean I take it they would let you go home and bring it back in because you can't go on demand

For them it’s the concept of bringing a sample in a pot!

areyoustillup · 26/03/2024 09:35

I don't even know I'm going to poo until I sit down to do a wee and a poo starts coming so yeah I just go but then I take no longer than if I was doing a wee.
Also when I need to go I need to go, I couldn't hold on.
Dh takes ages to poo so waits until he gets home.

The only problem is that someone sprayed air freshener as it is problematic for asthma and allergies. Vile stuff that has no place in communal spaces.

Wasn't allowed where I worked. Apparently an "unofficial" air freshener had been placed in the men's toilets, but was removed by the cleaners because only official products were allowed!!

If you have a medical issue then it’s different and can’t be helped, but surely most adults don’t poo at work! It smacks of laziness to me - couldn’t be arsed to get up a few minutes earlier to go before work.

What smacks of laziness to me is making an assumption that everyone else's body works exactly the same as yours, all the time. Not everyone needs to or can poo first thing in the morning: their body clock may well work in a way that means that, say, they poo an hour or two hours after meals, or their system only gets working after they've had the benefit of that walk to and from the station, or whatever.

Pooing at work seems the smart thing to do really - as previously posted, over a 25 year career spending 12 minutes a day going to the lavatory at work adds up to 1,300 hours.

At the average UK full time salary of £35k that's £24k just for doing what you were going to do anyway. At a mumsnet "just scraping by" 6 figure salary, you are looking at being paid £75k for pooing at work over your career 😂

Agreed. I've always seen McDonald's as a public toilet. Used it as one for over 30 years, never used it for anything else!

Fabricwitch · 26/03/2024 14:18

I find the 'neither me nor my husband poo at work' replies funny, like it's gross to poo at work but not gross to talk about how much you don't poo with your husband?! I don't know if my husband poos at work...I assume he does because he seems fairly normal otherwise!

Riverlee · 26/03/2024 14:58

Maddy70 · 25/03/2024 20:59

Obviously of you have a medical condition that's different. But if you can wait until you are home why wouldn't you? It stinks. Gross

I don’t have a medical condition and my poos don’t stink (unless I’ve eaten something dodgy). Smelly poos are a sign of a bad gut, poor diet or an illness.

I also go when I need to, whether it’s home, work or Macdonands. It’s not gross but is perfectly normal.

i’m guessing you don’t own a dog and have to pick up their poo!

brownasian · 26/03/2024 15:06

You didn’t even put a penny in the ‘global exploitation and deforestation’ tin?!

I’m reminded of the George Carlin quote ‘think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that.’

LordPercyPercy · 26/03/2024 16:51

What's everyone's thoughts on masturbating at work then? Better or worse than doing a poo?

ButterflyTable · 26/03/2024 17:20

@LordPercyPercy why the hell do you need to masturbate at work? I mean that’s the sort of urge of course you can control!

Gowlett · 26/03/2024 17:26

I’d say there are men who wank at work.
I’d say most women would never do that…

Clearly only a wanker would do that.

FindingMeno · 26/03/2024 17:34

I'm quite happy to poo on work time.

LordPercyPercy · 26/03/2024 17:37

@ButterflyTable It would be less smelly though, and the objection seems to be largely odour-based.

BooBooDoodle · 26/03/2024 17:53

I’m in my 40’s and I don’t like to poo at work. I have to share a unisex loo so imagine the carnage when I want to go for a regular pee. It’s not nice. I work with all ages and it’s the men who like to poo at work because they get paid to poo, their words. They stink it out and pee all over the place too. Dirty swines.

Islandgirl68 · 26/03/2024 18:04

That is ridiculous. You can't hold on for hours till you get home, poo and peeing is natural. Even the king does it. Why would people expect that. The world has gone mad.

Ringthebellisabel · 26/03/2024 18:36

Unfortunately I have IBD so frequently have to go toilet at work. It gives me huge anxiety. Not everyone can hold off until they get home.
