Am I cruel?

Hi,

This is a bit random.

Yesterday I was on the phone to a animal rescue place enquiring about volunteering.

The backdoor was open and my cat chased it and went to eat it. Luckily I intervened in time.

Last year he was stung, ended up really sick.

I apologised to the woman on the phone and said if I cannot get rid of the bee I will Hoover it up.

She replied that's really cruel and we don't have employees who harm animals and hung up the phone before I could explain.

Granted what I said wasn't the best, but it was massive and I was trying to get the bee out but it wouldn't budge.

Meanwhile my cat is stuck in the conservatory until it leaves.

Told my family - they agreed I was cruel.

Out of hours vet is £250 and he would have been stressed going the vets even before he was stung.

I feel awful. The bee died after I sprayed wasp spray on it.

Why didn't you just wave the bee away? It's very unlikely for a bee to sting a person or animal.
I would never harm or spray poison on a bee. They're good for nature and the garden.
I'm sure your cat is fine!
I guess call a different rescue and don't harm any animals during the call? Or if you do don't tell them about it...

Backtoreality1 · 25/03/2024 09:48

You can easily catch a bee in a glass........absolutely cruel and you should be ashamed of yourself.

stripes92 · 25/03/2024 09:50

You should feel awful, you killed it for absolutely no reason.

Oreosareawful · 25/03/2024 09:50

I can't believe you were going to hoover up a bee and you admitted this to an animal rescue. Of course thats cruel!

MadamVastra · 25/03/2024 09:50

Save the bees! 🐝

SherrieElmer · 25/03/2024 09:52

What an idiotic society we are becoming. It beggars belief.
Of course you are no cruel. That bee is threatening your cat and obviously you are not going to try to have a polite conversation with it. You are going to kill it anyway so what difference doest it make it ? A hoover will kill it instantly.

CurlewKate · 25/03/2024 09:53

You killed a bee? Why would you do that??

Hagbard · 25/03/2024 09:54

Start helping animals by not killing bees. How do you treat other insects? It's best to pop a glass over them and slide a bit of paper under. Then release outside. Don't kill the poor buggers

Bees sting people and animals all the time! Just look what the OP said.

How ignorant you are. Has the fact that the human decimation of bees is both imminent and catastrophic totally passed you by? FFS.

And the irony of someone on the phone to volunteer to an animal rescue centre while also casually killing bees is pure SMH.

Pipecleanerrevival · 25/03/2024 09:54

I’m not averse to hoovering up midges in the house OP. But bees are in severe decline and they are absolutely vital to our ecosystem. The woman on the phone was stupid to put the phone down rather than explain this to you.

Catsmere · 25/03/2024 09:55

That's the most confusing post, OP. It took several paragraphs before you said your cat was chasing a bee.

I agree with you being anxious to get your cat away from it, especially since you know how your cat reacts to beestings, but killing it? What's wrong with your cat staying indoors until the bee flew away?

KreedKafer · 25/03/2024 09:55

That bee is threatening your cat

So if the OP’s cat ‘threatens’ a mouse, am I allowed to kill the OP’s cat?

rooftopbird · 25/03/2024 09:57

Hoovering up an insect or small mammal is insufferably cruel as it takes them ages to die in the dust and filth. Hideous behaviour op.

CathbadsCloak · 25/03/2024 09:57

Yes, you were cruel. The cat couldn't get to the bee as you'd put him in the conservatory and the bee would have flown out eventually.

Cockapoopoopoo · 25/03/2024 09:57

Jeez, what a moron. Missed the news about how important bees are? Just wave it out of the window.

Spirallingdownwards · 25/03/2024 09:58

threatening your cat wins the bonkers quote of the day award.

Even if you were going to kill the bee (for which there was no reason so to do) I am not sure announcing it to a charity that rescues animals was the best idea!!!

FiveShelties · 25/03/2024 09:58

I don't think volunteering at an animal rescue place is the best move for you OP.😂

LightSwerve · 25/03/2024 10:02

I don't think you can work in an animal charity if you hoover up bees, no.

It is a cruel thing to do and completely unnecessary.

NotSmallButFunSize · 25/03/2024 10:02

Aren't bees a protected species?? Just open the bloody door or something?

SharkieAndGeorge · 25/03/2024 10:03

Did ye aye?

Countrygirlxo · 25/03/2024 10:03

I agree. That's really cruel.
I have animals at home but the other day I brought in a bee that didn't look well, gave it some sugar water and honey and it wasn't interested but left if on a flower in my kitchen overnight. Upon closer inspection the next day it had little mites on, so I got some tweezers to try pull the mites off as they kill bees.
Why on earth anyone could kill a bee makes me so sad 😭

INeedAnotherName · 25/03/2024 10:04

The bee died after I sprayed wasp spray on it.
I hope you have thoroughly washed the entire area, including where the mist droplets land over 10 feet away. Wouldn't want your cat to get sick from walking through it and washing their feet. Would cost you more than £250 too.

Agree with the others too, your cat was safe so you had the time to catch and release it.

stayathomer · 25/03/2024 10:05

I'm sorry but spraying is as bad as the hoovering op!!! You get them out? I’d say that woman thought you were playing a prank!
