Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

and I would suggest that possibly one third of these ‘love rain, jigsaw, parks, cafe, picture house, horrendously expensive gear’ etc etc etc are prime East Dulwich, rarified, entitled, expensively clad, financially buoyant, mediterranean getawayed, cleaner on a Monday, rain runs right off my back, due to my ludicrously expensive Australian specialised wet weather geared, impervious to financial restraints or limitations, OH in the city via bike train, vehicle right outside the front door, child minder takes children to school and returns, dreading the imminent holidays, three
children to entertain, in the incessant, cold, hail, sunless, rainy weather, whilst making sanctimonious preposterous unlikely posts on here as though, somehow, they are blissfully immune.
this is the wettest autumn/winter/spring I have ever known, flooded fields and homes, dire, awful, do not be telling me to don wellies and enjoy, no, not possible/feasible/gonna happen

I suspect you’re one of the said entitled and expensively clad types as you seem to have never heard of Decathlon?! Nice try but unfortunately I do not fit your posho narrative

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 13:07

@umberelladay sod the children I like building dens. But not in mud! If you like playing with children in the rain in mud soaked woods and fields, then you are hardier than me. I just think it is bloody miserable.

It’s so annoying that people ALWAYS go ‘Oh you must be middle class’ - us poor people are allowed to enjoy the outdoors and cope with the rain too!!

shearwater2 · 25/03/2024 13:08

I just try and enjoy all the seasons, even though I dislike the wet and cold. In autumn/winter I do more indoors type things, in spring/summer more outdoors stuff which relies on good weather.

You can't beat it if you intend to carry on living in the UK, you might as well join it!

fungipie · 25/03/2024 13:08

Just wondering (and any reply is fine with me)- did you grow up in this country or are you from sunnier parts of the world?

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 13:10

I live in one of the areas that is getting masses of rain

AmethystSparkles · 25/03/2024 13:10

OP whenever anyone complains about the weather or suggests it isn’t normal, lots and lots of posters insist that the complainer is wrong.

40C ….that’s just summer! Rain for months on end…you’re wearing the wrong clothes.

Of course it’s been raining more than usual and I think it seems worse because it rained so much last summer. The thing is though is that the weather was caused by the position of the jet stream and if that had been higher up, in its usual position we’d have had a heatwave like the rest of Europe. So I didn’t mind so much because at least British wildlife is more used to rain. Although owls can’t hunt in the rain.

SOxon · 25/03/2024 13:12

Carenz · 25/03/2024 12:52

I’m not this at all. We barely makes ends meet and I don’t live anywhere fancy. I only have nice waterproof trousers because I won them!

But that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t believe in sitting at home and complaining? Kids have got to get out sure and so do I. Without it I feel really down. So I go out in the rain and get on with it and embrace my kids jumping in puddles and getting caked in mud. For me it’s about light, fresh air and exercise for me and my children. Even if it does mean hanging the stuff up in the bathroom with the window open after to try and get it all dry before tomorrow. And mopping the floor (or just leaving it with muddy footprints!) - no porch or drive way for me.

You don’t have to be middle class to have this attitude? Why is MN always about bloody class?

Of course you do Carenze, my comment was not aimed at you : we have brollies, macs, all suspended in the shower, window open or fan going, essential, wellies on one of those bubble mats from IKEA, then washed off in the hard working shower, wet hands, faces, easily dealt with, now Spring is on the way, lambs and magnolias abound.
March! comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, then into April showers.
Good thing we are stoical, good humoured, weather proof.

DragonScreeches · 25/03/2024 12:25

Not everyone can do what you are able to do, though. And not everyone enjoys walking in the rain. I don't! A bit of drizzle, fine. Chucking it down, no thanks.

It is odd how so many people can't accept that the weather this past six months or so has been unusually awful and people are understandably fed up of it.

But the Mumsnet missive will generally argue black is white. And the 'put wellies on and enjoy the mud' is akin to making a chicken last a fortnight for 10 people.

I'm with you, OP - and I'm desperate to get in the garden.

fungipie · 25/03/2024 13:12

Most of us are NOT saying so much rain is fine and dandy. But suggesting that it is not worth 'wasting your life' because of it. Very different proposition.

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 13:14

@HazelLion Thanks. I remember a really hot day when someone posted about how it was unbearably hot today. Lots of posters saying no it is not, normal sunny day in Britain. Then in the TV news that evening they said the Met had announced it was the hottest day on record.
I have no idea why some on MN do this?

Who was it aimed at then? All I saw was an incredibly judgemental and defensive post stating that only the middle class can afford to enjoy the outdoors.. Dare I say you may be backtracking?

It's just rain. Unless it's acidic, you're not going to melt being exposed to a bit of rain.

I'm a keen walker, and I'll walk even if it's raining, since it still beats being shut inside all day. Often, it's nicer walking on a wet day since it means it's quieter. Fewer people around with badly controlled dogs etc. And you soon dry out afterwards anyway.

If you're one of these people who doesn't venture out unless it's picture perfect blue sky day with no risk of rain at all, then yes, I imagine it's frustrating. But life's too short to waste it worrying about getting wet.

Oh, there we are then. I won't worry about my electric wheelchair getting wet and breaking, leaving me bed ridden, because life's too short!

You clearly didn't read my post properly. 😁 It was a random dad building a shelter in the woods, not me.
I was a was a suit them and boot them and walk type of mum..tire the dog and small children out. Go home and get snuggled up.

I admired the dad though, they were having a great time.

Zone2NorthLondon · 25/03/2024 13:19

Conversely, were anyone acknowledges yes it’s irksome but you have to crack on this is met with a howl of derision at the mere suggestion. An out pouring of how intolerable and insurmountable it has become to have rain in the uk. The dogs don’t like it, the children don’t like it, takes 6 weeks to dry off, there is a pile of unscrapped wellies and sodden broken toddlers sobbing in the corner. Any suggestions of making the best of it, cracking on, are regarded suspiciously and dismissed with a no!not round these part rebuke. Because no one else has ever has to entertain children, keep going etc in the rain. No! It’s all too much

GettingStuffed · 25/03/2024 13:20

This has been the raniest period since records began, at least according to Netweather. It has to stop sometime.

I don't mind the rain personally.

MM, your hasty comment males no sense ?

MM, although when we lived in France we regularly shopped at Decathlon, natural fabrics, equestrian gear, saddlery, pure cotton tee shorts for the men, sportswear, tennis gear for school, all at good affordable prices, wonderful stuff, also waxed coats at Carrefour, clothes for the life you lead, also sexy lingerie and tiny sexy shoes in Limoges, for social life, that is, when the rain stopped

blabar · 25/03/2024 13:20

??? Do you live in the Lake District, Western Scotland or Wales OP - or Manchester?

In London it hasn't rained much at all. We've had some lovely warm, sunny days in recent weeks. No need for a coat.

Where do you actually live?

SuitcaseBursting · 25/03/2024 13:24

Central London this morning. Grey skies but no rain. I think it’s easier to ‘crack on’ here.

EternalSunshine19 · 25/03/2024 13:24

Where do you live? I go to museums and softplay when the weather isn't great. Failing that just put some wellies and a rain coat on and let your kids have fun in the rain. My daughter loves splashing in puddles. She wears a puddle suit and wellies, her clothes underneath don't get wet

blabar · 25/03/2024 13:25

I can't remember last time it rained? We have all the back doors open and I feel hot most if the time (could also be the menopause, admittedly). Haven't worn a coat in weeks.
