Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

This is simply untrue. It has rained all day for most days here on the west coast of Scotland. The forecast for this entire week is rain 24/7. This is not an exaggeration.

So many posts on this thread from people who can't imagine weather in other parts of the uk.

I live in the Lake District which is recognised as one of the wetter regions of the UK. My step tracker app doesn't lie!

The vast majority of people can go for a walk or get out even in the garden - honestly there is no magic here - scientific studies show the massive benefits of just a 10 min walk or 15 minutes outside. Today it is raining - I’m on holiday. I went out for 30 minutes and redid the bark on the drive in between showers - I felt amazing after and then in another 10 minute stop in the rain I went and picked up dog poo.

I work underground in a kind of bunker and I have light boxes all around my room and without medication and these and daily liquid vitamin D my levels are low. I don’t see natural light normally Monday to Friday and normally I’m there from 8 am to 5 pm so from November / December until March I leave in the dark and come home in dark - it seriously affects my mental health. Recently I’ve started rain or shine leaving my work for 15-30 minutes every day in the middle and sitting on a park bench near it or even in my work place just on a bench. Two weeks of doing this I feel so much already.

if the hate the rain that much you have two real choices - move somewhere where there is less rain - Stay indoors and moan.

I felt amazing after and then in another 10 minute stop in the rain I went and picked up dog poo.

I am sold on the rain now! 😍

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 11:23

Dog poo always gets worse in the rain. I reckon some lazy people tell themselves that it just gets washed away and leave it.

I feel sorry for the kids, it's not like they could take some annual leave later in April if the weather improves, they get what they get.

When it comes to the weather, we all get what we get. No-one gets to pick and choose what the weather does.

My parents got married in April in the 1970s. It snowed.

What's your step tracker app and the fact that you live in the Lake District got to do with the constant rain on the west coast of Scotland?

Misery

One day of rain in between a sunny day and then a dry day, with sunny spells for the rest of the week?

It’s been raining for weeks, months. That screengrab was a snap shot of today. There are pictures of sunshine with the RAIN for the rest of the week, pictures of the sunshine which seldom materialises.

Really glad you’ve been having lovely, dry sunny days though!

evilharpy · 25/03/2024 11:30

It says no rain on Sunday, but I would bet my life savings that it'll still rain - it just might not be torrential. There is nothing enjoyable or non-miserable about this, absolutely nothing.

Then why did it have "today" with the sun symbol? You took that screenshot yesterday, when it was apparently sunny.

I haven't been having lovely dry sunny days. Where did I say that?

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 11:32

The problem is a lot of places need a good stretch of sunny days to let the ground dry out. A couple of hours of sun between rainy days doesn't cut it.

HauntedBungalow · 25/03/2024 11:34

What a crackers thread. It's like all the Insta Gingerbread Latte crew have risen up and gone rogue. "Snuggle up and curl one out on the sofa with your kids, you twat"; "Splash your pram in that fucking puddle, thicko", for 33 pages.

OP this has been an exceptionally wet winter and it really feels like it's been going on far too long now. Our local park has been underwater for three months, there's been intermittent flooding - on pretty much every road out of town at some point, and the sky has been relentlessly grey. I definitely hear your feeling of being trapped - there have been many days when I've felt surrounded by water and all of my regular outdoor activities have been affected - my allotment flooded, my walking group has abandoned trips due to finding ourselves sinking in mud, several local events were cancelled due to flooding. No amount of demented chanting about appropriate clothes from the Barbour wellies crowd makes a difference to any of that. It's been miserable.

Yes the sun shone yesterday but with a biting wind, but that was okay as there was no rain. That was one nice day! I am not lying when I state the rain has been relentless for months.

May I ask what point you’re trying to make here?

DragonScreeches · 25/03/2024 11:37

There is no such thing as the wrong clothes, just the wrong weather!

Where I am it is yet again going to rain all week and possibly next week too. It is awful and not usual. I cannot remember the last time it rained so much. It is so, so depressing.

I definitely think there’s an overlap in people who love rain/lockdowns/hate people.

Nope - some of us are just able to make the best of bad situations, something you should really try considering you’ve found fault in absolutely every poster who has tried to give you helpful advice.. Lockdown walks with my best friend (in my bubble), come rain or shine were always a highlight of my day. Life was at a slower pace and I still miss being able to get out for quality time with her in nature so often. Nice try though OP!

My parents got married in April in the 1970s. It snowed.

Had it snowed almost every day prior to that for months? Did they enjoy a decent summer the year before and after their wedding?

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 11:41

It was lockdown that has probably put me off rainy outing with the kids completely. I'm just remembering all the well intentioned advice about puddlesuits and hauling even more kit out with me. Nothing made it not awful.

BarrelOfOtters · 25/03/2024 11:42

Yeah, that second lockdown when the weather was shit. That was tough.

Langston Hughes… major figure of 20th century literature… twee.
For goodness sake, it’s a poem, with a metaphor.
It’s fine to not like it though 😉

well yes, in 1930’s Harlem, clearly we missed the metaphor
and major figure or not…
this reads as though it is written by a schoolchild trying
too hard to please teacher, in a small town in the wake
of the American dust bowl drought, somewhere on a dusty
plain, desperate for rain, fantasising the feel and effects of
rain, without considering the drawbacks, 3 small children,
dog, stroller, wellies, coats, all in a small hallway, daily

it’s also fine not to appreciate having your choice of ‘poem’
forced upon our soaking wet sensibilities
and to not be patronised by your notion of rain ‘metaphors’

Bournetilly · 25/03/2024 11:44

I like the rain if I’m staying in the house on my own.

It’s rubbish when you’ve got young children, I don’t want to be cold and getting wet but I’m also fed up of spending the day at the soft play. I have a baby and pre schooler so can’t go to many places like the cinema/ swimming (which would be a change) unless there is another adult.

PlasticineKing · 25/03/2024 11:44

I think it’s been a lot wetter than previous springs - there are some fields around us that are prone to having noticeable bits flooded occasionally, and even when there’s been a few days with no rain they’re still flooded. Or when the flooding does finally go, it’s back after a day of rain, where it would normally take days to be that saturated.

I’m definitely looking forward to it being a bit brighter.

Is it? I think everyone understands that OP was indulging in a little hyperbole there. It’s quite clear that she, like many of us, is Sick Of Rain! That’s entirely reasonable.

Why can’t people just allow someone a little moan?! You’re not making it rain less by being belligerent!
