Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

Not a weirdo at all we all like that , it just makes you unrealistic in this county , why not emigrate?

DottyLottieLou · 25/03/2024 10:44

No such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes.

ElaineMBenes · 25/03/2024 10:45

I definitely think there’s an overlap in people who love rain/lockdowns/hate people.

Nope.
Hated lockdown
Love people
Love rain...autumn and winter are my favourite seasons.
Not too keen on Spring.

Sounds to me like you need to live in a different country.

So wanting to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D is unrealistic, but you think emigrating is a realistic suggestion? Confused

shearwater2 · 25/03/2024 10:47

I grew up in Manchester and now live in Kent so generally I find the weather quite good these days! There is definitely on average more sunshine and less rain in Kent plus it is warmer. But it has been quite a dreich spring so far. We're only five days into official spring though and the winter wasn't too bad, rather mild mostly.

The former is unrealistic in a temperate climate in winter. Only the very hardiest (or foolish) of us attempt picnics in February in the UK or expect to sunbathe in March.

It's like going to Antarctica and complaining about the ice and the penguins.

This is our weather. It will do what it does. We can't change that. You'd have no more luck shouting at the grass because it's green or at gravity because it makes things fall down. All we can do is learn to live with it.

Allfur · 25/03/2024 10:48

I don't mind the rain, but I do hate umbrellas

@ElaineMBenes

how can you not like spring??! Genuinely curious

lacyviolet · 25/03/2024 10:50

I used to enjoy rainy days, and basically I still prefer a climate where there is a lot of variation through the year. I think if the weather was fine every day, people wouldn't appreciate it so much.

But it does feel like we have had significantly more rain than usual for some time now, and I find it affects my mood quite severely, whether I go out or stay in. Coming relatively soon after the lockdowns, I think people are entitled to feel fed up with it. I do wonder whether part of the increase in MH issues over the past couple of years is weather related.

But I guarantee you, if we get a heatwave in the summer, I will be complaining about that too! I find it much harder to exercise outside in very hot weather than in the rain.

If we do get a hosepipe ban after all this, people will be angry as well as fed up.

wrong

Stormyweathr · 25/03/2024 10:52

If I could I would move abroad in a heartbeat I feel your pain I hate walking, driving or sitting in the rain

Saying all that I did buy a massive cantilever umbrella for the garden and I have sat outside underneath it whilst it’s been raining with a jacket on and fire pit going before now that was during lockdown though when I was furloughed, on my own and bored stiff (and drunk by 11am everyday 🤣)

Thindog · 25/03/2024 10:53

I am sick of it too.
I have horses and the fields are trashed and muddy, far worse way than for the last 25 years. No sign of drying up, rotting all the new fencing. There are new ponds all over where we go riding, the fields are too wet to be planted up, trees are standing in water, so lots more will fall when we get another storm.
Lots of places that have never flooded did recently.
It’s not just typical British weather, I am outdoorsy and easily cope with normal rain. This has gone on since last July!

ElaineMBenes · 25/03/2024 10:55

I just don't.
I don't hate it or anything but it just find it a bit 'meh'.
I LOVE the smell of autumn and the dark nights. Spring just doesn't elicit the same feelings.

BarrelOfOtters · 25/03/2024 10:57

I'm in the North West, it's been shite weather. We have a dog, she's pissed off with the rain, the cat is too.

My garden is waterlogged, my allotment is a swamp, can't get anything planted.

Yes you get out in between rain. And yesterday was glorious.

The Southern lot can get awae to hell with their get out and embrace the weather rubbish.

Hoplolly · 25/03/2024 10:58

Hey OP. I am with you. I am so fed up of the rain, it's constant. We're getting on with stuff and going out, if we get wet we get wet but it's incessant and as we move into Spring it's stopping events happening, DS has had so many football matches cancelled, I've seen so many campsites say they've had to cancel bookings at least until end of April. It's depressing.

MabelMaybe · 25/03/2024 11:00

We've been looking at cutting down on holiday costs. Would love to camp for our main holiday, but it's grim in the rain and we can't guarantee dry weather in the summer. I hear you OP.

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 11:02

People have latched onto rain as if thats the only problem... talk about missing the point.

Yesterday there was no rain, it LOOKED gloriously sunny but there was gale force winds pushing the temps sub freezing... the council shut things down for safety reasons. That's the first sunny day we have had that wasn't mid week when theres work and school.

All these people saying 'it wont rain all day, just wait until the break in the rain and go out then' do non of you have jobs?

There's far more too it than 'just pop out when its not drizzling'... You can tell a lot of people here don't live in the north or in mountainous or coastal regions.

The cold, the wind and the effects off weather (such a slippy surfaces) are far more of a risk, its just cold is even worse when you are soaked through.

No one should have to wear a balaclava to go out, because otherwise the wind feels like pins driving into their face... stop trying to pretend its normal when its not.

Go feed the ducks... yeah in the flooded park thats shut down?

Even by British standards this has been unprecedented bad weather and its all factually recorded.

museumum · 25/03/2024 11:02

Where I live it's been unusually grey and oppressive this winter. I live in a place known for wind and cold, but also blue skies and little rain. This winter it's been so grey and the cloud base has been so low it's more usual to not be able to see the tops of the hills than see them. I've felt ground down by it. Also my favourite paths are almost unpassable as they've been muddy for months. It's the mildest and wettest winter for a very long time (mild is not good, I'd much prefer a bite of frost).

thislittlebird · 25/03/2024 11:05

I also agree with you, OP, I hate the rain and constant cloud. It was cloudy/cold here from last March through to May last year, then some good weather in June, a wet July/August, followed by a couple of lovely weeks in September. Since then it's been very grey and wet. I am really hoping for a better summer than the last one, and I'm in the south.

This thread is truly bonkers 😂
Most people prefer being warm and dry to bring cold and wet 🤷‍♀️ OP is perfectly reasonable to be sick of the weather that makes you cold and wet rather than warm and dry, especially since it’s been shown to be factually correct that we have had much more rain than usual.

Why some people can’t let a justifiable moan stand without angrily assailing the OP is absolutely baffling!

If you prefer rain you’re in a tiny minority.

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 11:11

I feel sorry for the kids, it's not like they could take some annual leave later in April if the weather improves, they get what they get.
