Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

I’m confused why so many people don’t realise we don’t have the same weather every day, has no one ever seen a weather forecast.

We’ve had a few dry days, we’ve even had a few nice and warm dry days. But we’ve also had dry days with absolutely bitter winds like part of yesterday. Wind is worse than light rain.
Im in the North East, it’s grey and spitting today.

For me it’s the lack of light. I’m past going to parks with small children, but I hate the grey/dark days, mentally the sun makes me feel a thousand times better.

My birthday is in March and I can remember going out and it being nice.

NotAgainWilson · 25/03/2024 09:53

You are not going mad. In my area it has rained far more than in previous years and I think we have only had a couple of days this month when it wasn’t raining or drizzling.

It is difficult with kids, I found that having a year ticket to closed spaces like museums with a decent play area helped. It did also help leaving DS and his dad to have a men’s day catch up every Saturday while I did whatever child free activity I wanted. It kept me from going insane in the toddler years.

Well, you can’t change the weather but you can change how you think about it…

Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
And I love the rain.

(With thanks to Langston Hughes - love this poem).

i don’t want the rain to “kiss “ me

I want some sun ffs

Mammajay · 25/03/2024 09:56

Glorious spring day here yesterday...SW london.walked by the river and everyone was out. Clocks go forward Sunday .. spring is here. I don't know where you live but it does make a difference. My sil from York was amazed how much warmer it is in the south.

Mamma64467 · 25/03/2024 09:56

I lived at the other extreme when it's 30+ degrees every day, and there were no clouds so no protection from UV, and if there were any clouds then it meant torrential rain was on the way.

It was awful. I liked the heat but DH was too hot and really unhappy. I hated the relentless sun because I always had to worry about UV and had to put on SPF50 and DEET mosquito repellant on myself and my kids every single day of the year. We couldn't go outside between 9-5 when UV was at its highest, so we spent a fortune on indoor play. When we did go outside in the sun, we had to be careful it was for short intervals, 1-2h at a time, with parasols and long sleeves even though it was 30/35 degrees.

The UK is too wet, cold and cloudy but at least you can dress appropriately and go out all day if you want.

LisaD1 · 25/03/2024 09:59

Just get some decent waterproofs. Our kids are grown now at 24 and 16 but they have so many amazing memories of us out in the rain having fun. We had theme park memberships and loved it when it rained as there were never any queues. If you wait for perfect weather in the UK life will pass you by.

NashvilleQueen · 25/03/2024 09:59

Stop telling us to embrace it.

I DON'T WANT TO.

I don't want to buy new waterproofs
I don't want to sit in a steaming cafe piss wet through looking through the windows at the grey sky
I don't want to jump in a muddy fucking puddle. I'm 52.

WalkingonWheels · 25/03/2024 09:59

DH and I were talking about this yesterday. We haven't had a dry day for months. It's really affecting my mental health - unlike most people I physically cannot go out in the rain. It will break my electric wheelchair. It also exacerbates my illnesses if I get cold and wet, even wearing waterproofs (which don't work properly on my chair).

I look at my TimeHop memories every day, and we've not had weather like this in the last ten years. It's utterly miserable.

Who could possibly argue with this?!

MissyB1 · 25/03/2024 10:00

In terms of where people are, I’m in Gloucestershire, we get a lot of rain! I think it comes over from Wales.

SuitcaseBursting · 25/03/2024 10:02

I once met a mum when my kid was a baby. I was complaining about the mess of weaning and the frustration when the food wasn’t even eaten. She said, ‘oh I just sing songs and dance around the kitchen whilst he is in the highchair and we make it fun!’ I knew then be would never be friends.

Same goes for the manic puddle-embracers here.

It is ok to moan sometimes. Doesn’t mean we have to emigrate!

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 10:02

Also all the people saying just go for a walk, learn to enjoy the rain, buy water proofs are so ignorantly able bodied.

Your very lucky the weather doesn't effect you, bad weather (cold, wet, icy etc...) can literally kill (and does) and for many of us that risk severally limits our options and/or effects our mobility.

Cold weather actually HURTS its not just 'oh its a bit damp out'.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 25/03/2024 10:03

So what do you want us to do about it?
Book a holiday in the sun.. get some vit D or take a supplement. I booked last Weds.. was in the sun by Thursday.. here now...
Bet you will moaning in the heatwave in the summer.. too hot to go out.lol

juniorspesh · 25/03/2024 10:04

Walking round a city in the rain is absolutely fine. You're still out and about, but there are lots of places to go in and out of. You can go to an art gallery, put your umbrella up and go to the shops, go to a cafe, etc. Get on the train and go to a random town?

Where OP lives is relevant because if they have chosen to live somewhere that is nice in the summer but depressing in the winter, like the seaside, then they could fix that by going somewhere else.

Langston Hughes… major figure of 20th century literature… twee.
For goodness sake, it’s a poem, with a metaphor.
It’s fine to not like it though 😉

TeenLifeMum · 25/03/2024 10:04

I’m normally an “embrace it” kind of person but this winter has been soooo wet. Rarely a crisp cold winter day. Every dog walk means a muddy dog and I’ve given up on the floors - I still clean them but not every time we get home with the dog.

we had sun on Saturday, then hail on Sunday. Saturday just made be long for the dry days when I can sit in the garden with my coffee and a blanket reading my book.

Crying 😂 in a roundabout way this thread has actually cheered me up from the rain pissing at my window, so many of the posts are just absolutely nuts

I know it's a cliche, but if you like being outside I do think a dog would improve your quality of life. Pre-dog, I (like most people I imagine), would cancel a country walk if it was raining. Now I've had to go walking in all weathers I realise it's not that bad. Good boots and a long waterproof coat are all that's needed, I haven't worn waterproof trousers since I did Duke of Edinburgh at school. Get a coat with a decent hood that has a sufficient brim so you don't even notice the rain, Didrikson are good for this. My mood always improves after a walk, rain or shine. If you can't emigrate your choices are to either stay miserable, or make the most of our glorious outdoors in all weathers. I'd choose the latter personally.

I mean you might not want to, but the planet's hydrological cycle doesn't care what you want. So sitting there complaining about it isn't going to change much.

Yes usually by this time we’ve had some nice days. One of my FB memories from last week popped up and it was me having breakfast in the garden. It was freezing rain, wind and hailstones the same day this year.

I’m seriously thinking when Dh and I retire (about 10 years) we should downsize to a small flat here, and also buy a flat in a warmer Country. And spend as much of the winter abroad as we can.

We have a local group who offer courses like this. It sounds brilliant and I really wanted to attend, but it's £80 per person.

BuddhaAtSea · 25/03/2024 10:12

I have a dog. We walk 3-4times a day. I’m a runner, I go out 2-3 times a week.
Tell you what, even my dog is sick of the fucking rain now, she’s like: not this shit again, I’m going back in.
So. Yeah, this is the UK, it rains a lot. But these past 10 months have been particularly shite. We’re all fed up with the cold, the damp, the wind, the grey skies.
