Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Those who say ‘just crack on, stop whining’ - somehow I am not able to convince my 6 month old to enjoy it… and yes, I do have a rain cover for the pram, but when he cries and I want to take him out (and put in the baby carrier for example) it’s simply not possible! Also, as he’s crawling now I would love to put him on the grass in our garden to let him explore. It’s just not great when it’s constantly WET (or should I put him in some wellies and crack on?!?)

Another trip to wander around our local Dunelm it is today… (we’re friends with the security guard now 🙃)

I am with you OP, the lack of sun makes me miserable.

Pets at home is good for a wander too and home bargains/b&m Smile

First morning of the Easter holidays and its pissing rain here. I managed to find a box of Easter decorations from last year and DD is currently playing egg hunt around the house and we are off swimming later. I think a lot of people on here are missing the point that it's not about going on bracing country walks but being able to do day to day stuff without feeling miserable. My dad has Parkinson's and mum is his carer. One thing he loves is his stroll to the shops for his paper every morning but a lot of mornings now the rain has been too heavy. They have their bus passes and Mum would get the bus to town for a browse and a chat and now she is often saying she didn't bother as the weather has been too bad. So I think the extra rainfall will seriously impact people like my parents or people with disabilities.

Avatartar · 25/03/2024 09:26

It’s hard with young DCs, you just have to dress accordingly and accept it’s going to be more messy than you’d like. As for it getting you down just think of the farmers and others where their livelihoods depend on the weather and trying to second guess it when
planning

Whinge · 25/03/2024 09:26

Yes it was but it’s over years and you have to be able to not want everything brand new and designer - it needs to be proper stuff

It seems as though you've been very lucky with finding bargains, and even then you admit this has taken years to build up enough items. Unfortunately most won't be as fortunate as you, and it's difficult to enjoy the rubbish weather in the years it takes to find or save up for the items.

What about it?

Wet hair dries - do you never wash your hair?

If it's raining before I go out, I just put a hat on. Sometimes take a brolly but not fussed on them. Sometimes wrap a scarf over my head, or shock horror, sometimes my hair gets wet and then it dries eventually...

@LuckySantangelo35

i blow dry my hair so would be annoyed if it got wet cos it never looks the same when it gets wet with the rain and then dries

housethatbuiltme · 25/03/2024 09:26

TheSnakeCharmer · 25/03/2024 08:57

For me it was the wind all last year. None stop wind. This year has been wetter than usual, but the biggest problem at this time of year is the changeable nature of the weather which makes it very hard to plan.

My only advice would be that, if you have a garden, perhaps set up some outdoor activities such as a water table, planting, making bug hotels, an outdoor kitchen etc and then dash out when there's a break in the weather. It's not the same as a day out.
My kids used to love a garden centre (particularly with sheds) as a toddler. If the weather was really dire, I would take them to IKEA for a good run around or B&Q. Sometimes wrapping up and heading into woodland can be nice in the rain too.

This as well there have been a few days this month that looked sunny and 'shouldn't have been' cold (actual temps around 9-12) but their was icy gale force winds (yesterday was so bad the council shut a bunch of things for safety) dropping the temp feel down to -1 to 3. So you just can't enjoy even the little bit of sun there occasionally is.

I feel for you. A couple of years ago mine was the same age and crawling early. March was gorgeous, so many sunny days. Photos of him in sun hat and little shorts with suncream on. We spent a lot of time at the park with other mums from the local playgroup and all the little ones bumbled about on the grass. I also remember the days of wandering garden centres just to get out. I hope you have good local playgroups, a good library etc to get out and meet other mums in the meantime.

Hopefully the weather turns a corner soon and you'll absolutely love it and appreciate it all the more for this tough phase. Praying for the sun alongside you!

I manage to walk the dog and deal with DD’s pony in all weathers. To some extent you are being unreasonable about this - there is no reason that you can’t go outside in it with appropriate clothing on

Be realistic - you live in the UK. Picnics do not exist outside of the summer months and never have

Precisely this
It's March
Go for a walk, wear waterproofs, stop at a cafe to warm up
Beach walk, go for F&C
Cinema
Stop moaning

Wowzers I had no idea this thread would invoke such passion from my fellow rain haters and those who seem incredibly triggered by my not liking waterproof trousers!

Anyway - rain again today. On goes the plastic poncho and a manic smile for the school run.

Are you dialling in from the North OP? It's cloudy but fair in south east london today. Maybe our sky-high council tax and house prices in the south are actually a secret weather surcharge? You are going to have to sit DH down tonight and table a house move to somewhere warmer.

Thefutureisourownpath · 25/03/2024 09:00

Well I used to be like you and now I’m not. We invested heavily in great waterproofs and coats, gloves, hats, waking boots, rucksacks and general kit. We literally have a huge box in the hall way and it’s full of winter gloves / hats / scarves, multiple hi vis jackets, waterproof - two for each of us. Multiple decent and I mean decent coats - everyone has a wax jacket and I decent one. The kids have waterproof hats like Australia style but leather and waterproof. Always have towels and spare clothes in the car and if on a walk always take a first aid kit and everyone carries their own flask of hot chocolate or tea. You don’t need to go for long but the rain is cleansing it soothes the soul.

@Thefutureisourownpath

not everyone has the money to spend like that

no

people can moan all they want

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2024 09:37

I don’t find rain cleansing or soul soothing.

l have sebhorric dermatitis. If my head gets wet with rain water the itching drives me fucking mental.

l hate rain.

pontipinemum · 25/03/2024 09:39

Please no more talk of rain. DH is a farmer and it's all I've heard!!

But no I agree, unless you have loads of money for continuous indoor activities it gets pretty shit staying at home with DC when it's constantly raining. I got DS out for a walk in the forest a few days ago between rain. It was lovely to get out and about

Does the SAD lamp work? I suffer terribly with SAD since moving back to uk and no amount of bit d pills helps. Does it age your face?

mimblewimble · 25/03/2024 09:42

I'm a gardener. I'm used to working in all weathers. I have the right gear.

And it HAS been raining more than usual, I'm fed up of it, it's dreary and miserable, the ground is waterlogged, I have customers cancelling on me when normally I'm super busy this time of year...

Sure you can go out, but you can't relax in the rain. There's nothing like a bit of warmth and sunlight on your face after a long winter.

Whinge · 25/03/2024 09:42

Go for a walk - Free
wear waterproofs - These can be expensive, especially for decent quality ones.
stop at a cafe to warm up - This means spending money
Beach walk, go for F&C - Spending more money
Cinema - Spending even more money

Compared to getting out to a park for an entire day with the small cost of a home made picnic.

Sure trips to the cinema and a cafe are lovely every once in a while, but when it's been months of shitty weather the costs add up. It's almost April, and by now it would be nice for parents to get out of the house without spending excessive amounts of money to entertain children.

A sad light has been life changing for me, it really helps during the winter months.

sleepingintrees · 25/03/2024 09:44

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:30

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

Well you are making your happiness dependent on sunshine. That’s a choice. And it’s one that’s never going to work out well in the UK.

i do get it. I don’t want to be out a long time in the rain. But it can be fun. You see the world in a different way. Mud is fun for kids. Puddles are fun for kids. Go to woods where you get some shelter. Cleaning up after mud is not as bad as staying in bored and depressed.

You can’t fight the weather so you may as well embrace it, or at least accommodate it. If the alternative is sitting in being resentful and depressed, what have you got to lose by going out?

PinkShore · 25/03/2024 09:45

Agreed.

I actually don’t think I can cope with the UK dreary weather anymore. I am a different person entirely in the sunshine - flitting around in sudresses, sandals, basking in the sun. In winter I’m just frumpy and miserable. Tried to sit in the garden at the weekend and caught a chill, even in a fleece.

Looking for recommendations of somewhere to move to where it’s warm year-round.

Whinge · 25/03/2024 09:45

Mud is fun for kids. Puddles are fun for kids.

Not all children like mud and puddles.

For heavens sake people are allowed to complain about the weather without being told to emigrate, after all we Brits are world famous for it!

Oh yes, emigrate, why didn’t I think of that it’s so easy to do after all. Just pack your bag, hop on a plane to a sunnier clime and there you go, easy. 🙄

Just an alternative suggestion givven that the OP was so resistant to every option offered by pp's...
If the weather is so objectionable, go somewhere it isn't.

cerisepanther73 · 25/03/2024 09:47

@GoodnightAdeline

Just embrace it,

Wrap up in enough clothing layers with your waterproofs and wellies or wellies in bag,
think of fun and educational or artistic things to do places to go too,
on noticeboards out and about and on the Internet too,
such as very good website eventbrite. com and youtube
so many interesting things to do and see in comfort of your home or and outdoors,
It quite often gaps of OK weather amongst the grey dreary bleak rainy weather

think of the positives about this amount of rain
Keeps things lush and green fauna plants life good for crops too,

Rember what it was like in Australia with totally opposite problem of far too much dry hot spells and lack of enough rain,

Australia Bush fires 🔥 and loss of peoples homes and native species Kanagroos and land,
like a real life Ammeragon scenes,
Kanagroos clinging on desperately for life , dying amongst the flames..

JFDIYOLO · 25/03/2024 09:48

This year, I actually have some money.

Over the winter I've bought

A gorgeous waterproof hooded puffy jacket
Two pairs of boots
One decent non-poundshop umbrella
Thermal socks
A woolly hat

And I'm actually enjoying the weather.

Next thing - a lightweight go-over Mac for spring and summer.

This is one situation where retail therapy IS a good thing ...

Go shopping.
