Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

Thank goodness you haven't anything serious to worry about, like cancer or a loved one dying. I am sure they would rather put up with a bit of rain.

This is such a horrible post.

How do you know?

willWillSmithsmith · 25/03/2024 08:21

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:26

Like what? I don’t want to sit inside all day for weeks and weeks on end. It rained all through December. It rained all through January. It rained all through February. And now March. It’s fucking depressing. I’m not surprised so many people are vitamin D deficient when we barely go outside.

‘April showers’ are yet to come too so brace yourself. I’ve noticed it rains a lot in June now which I don’t remember so much as a kid.

We do need rain of course or we’d be living in a desert but enough already! 😁🌧️🌧️🌧️

I hear you, OP. We moved home to Northern Ireland a couple of years ago after many years in SW England and I was not prepared for the weather. SW England is relatively dry. It has been raining since last July and is constantly windy so you can't even put up an umbrella and it feels colder than it actually is because the wind cuts through you. My daughter is well past the age of enjoying puddle jumping and even my hardy husband is fed up with it. It's making me beyond depressed. We can't just move because of caring responsibilities but I just can't do this for the rest of my life.

I would defy any of the "no bad weather, only unsuitable clothing" insufferable lot to enjoy this.

It did actually stop raining for most of yesterday and I finally managed to now the lawn but it's like a swamp.

Sympathies from another NI dweller, yesterday was lovely and today we’re back to another washout.

Excessive rain is definitely something to worry about.

Did you miss the serious flooding at several points in the last few months? Many people are still unable to return to their homes.

Or the rotting / damaged crops, meaning farmers are losing their livelihood?

swayingpalmtree · 25/03/2024 08:24

Kissed by the rain?

I'd rather be snogged by the sun thanks!

ABwithAnItch · 25/03/2024 08:26

Completely agree with you. This year has been really bad. Feels to me like it started raining November 1st and hasn’t stopped

midgetastic · 25/03/2024 08:27

As climate change occurs the uk gets much wetter , and the extremes get more extreme

It could get much worse or we could make radical changes to prevent that

And the more people who act to change the more likely the big hitters will change

Because it's no good waiting for them to do the right thing unilaterally- they won't - they have the money to adapt to climate change but they will change if enough people act now - partly because it will hit their pockets and feelings of self worth

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

Emigrate if you hate the rain so much. The middle east is dry, but no so green and not sure picnics are a thing there, but...

MsRosley · 25/03/2024 08:30

Christ, Mumsnet is getting worse for everyone just piling in to tell people they're wrong. It's so tiresome. Absolutely everyone I know has been complaining about the constant rain. Indeed, I just googled and found that the In fact, the winter of 2023 into 2024 has been confirmed as the eighth wettest winter on record, causing widespread flooding across the country, including farmland, with wheat, barley and vegetable farmers reporting losses to floodwaters.

Paisley78 · 25/03/2024 08:32

First words my husband said to me this morning..

guess what? Big Pause. It’s raining 😱😂

I am also fed up with it but nowadays force myself out for a walk every day, given it’s on my own so easier than with kids of course, I don’t get wet through, thank you lovely Seasalt raincoat 👏🏻

Totally agree. I know the rain is good for nature etc but it does feel never-ending. I look at the forecast and it says dry foe a few hours, i go out and it rains anyway. Yes I have waterproof clothing but agree op, it's shit getting wet and muddy.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2024 08:35

Me too. Whatever happened to ‘flaming June?’ Dh was born in June. It always used to be sunny on his birthday. But it hasn’t been for the last 20 years or so.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 25/03/2024 08:35

I'm not keen on days and days of rain but I still recommend getting out for some fresh air with wellies etc. it just feels better to break up the day and get some fresh air.
We used to go for a walk in a local park with big trees and pavements so no mud and some shelter from the rain.
Also look on your weather up and see when there's a break in the rain and head out then.

Other places we went to if it was raining was
Visit relatives
Shopping centres
Aquarium
Museum
Art gallery
Swimming
Library
Supermarket

This rain is so important.

We need 12 weeks constant rain to replenish after the exceptionally hot and dry summer last year. Even the big trees started dying. I think it's fortunate we have this rain.

Drier times are coming but for now we need the rain.

Did we? I remember 2022 was hot hot. My tan from our holiday was topped up until October time.

2023, we went away the same week and came back, had one week of sunshine in June, then it’s pissed it down since July. The 6 weekholidays last year were a complete wash out. Our patio slabs were turning green at the end of September.

According to the BBC weather app I can expect a brief break in the rain at 10am on Thursday until about 1pm. By the time I finish work it reckons the rain will be full pelt again.

There we have it then. Anecdote = Fact. Seems No one can crack on, we are all immobilised by rain. Except surfers it seems. The surfers will rise & prosper then. Rest of those aquaphobes you observed must return to their tumble dry domains to shelter from rain with their cockapoo

You are embarrassing yourself now with your extreme responses. Seems like you are reading a different thread. Some people are complaining about the rain and the struggles with young kids. I don’t have an issue as I live in London and have adult kids so it’s easier.

Maybe step away from the thread if it’s enraging you so much? Such hyperbole from you.

Only on MN could complaining about rain be controversial!

A little dramatic. I currently look after a very sick relative and I’ve had cancer but I’ve still managed to light heartedly comment on the rain without getting arsey.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 25/03/2024 08:40

I honestly can’t believe how worked up some people are getting because others are complaining that it’s been raining a lot.

This may well be the most bat shit thread I’ve ever read.

Allthingsdecember · 25/03/2024 08:40

I agree that rain isn't as much fun as dry weather. But it sounds like more than that for you?

Try upping your vitamin D intake (even being outside all day at this time of the year isn't enough exposure). And get out of the house no matter how miserable the idea makes you feel. Soft play, muddy walk, local library- whatever fills you with less dread. An afternoon at home is nice and cosy if you've already been out. A full day at home with small children is horrible.

SuitcaseBursting · 25/03/2024 08:41

Zone2NorthLondon · 25/03/2024 00:56

No, factually it has not rained constantly or continuously in the UK
Rained A lot, yes. rained More, yes. Continously,no. Constantly, no

Are you normally this literal?!

And you do know that the weather is different in different parts of the country yes? So someone in Glasgow might not have the same weather as you in Hampstead Heath!

UserNMCHNG · 25/03/2024 08:43

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 24/03/2024 19:37

I guess it depends where you are but the weather here today was glorious - blue skies, sunshine, I dried two loads of washing on the line, the kids played on the trampoline (and begged me to get the paddling pool out) we walked to the park and the kids had ice cream.

yesterday it rained all day so we put on rain suits and wellies went for a 'puddle stomp', (as I had to convince youngest to collect the eldest and we didn't have a car).

Edited

same! We actually got the paddling pool out a couple weeks ago but I packed it away yesterday because rain 😆

This is one of the most insufferable things I have ever read on mumsnet.

Let the rain kiss you 🙄

Agreee. Like those hideous letters ‘from baby’ to mum. I have zero tolerance for twee.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 25/03/2024 08:45

Yes. This is what I lived by when my dc were small. Out and about somewhere then just stay home doing some activity, baking or watching films.
It always seems better when you've been out and done something 'worthy'

Emigrate if you hate the rain so much. The middle east is dry, but no so green and not sure picnics are a thing there, but...

For heavens sake people are allowed to complain about the weather without being told to emigrate, after all we Brits are world famous for it!

Oh yes, emigrate, why didn’t I think of that it’s so easy to do after all. Just pack your bag, hop on a plane to a sunnier clime and there you go, easy. 🙄
