Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

1000 replies

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

You have to move to a different climate

or you have to not let the rain stop anything. Wellies and a coat and out as normal

Theredjellybean · 25/03/2024 07:56

I agree...it's so miserable.
I hate rain...it's muddy everywhere, it's cold, and my hair goes frizzy...that's the worse bit, a first world problem but it really gets to me

MidnightPatrol · 25/03/2024 07:57

I don’t believe for a minute that all these people are spending hours outside every day in the rain with toddlers.

Sneezingdust · 25/03/2024 07:58

It’s my day off work today, I just looked out the window and it’s raining AGAIN this morning . honestly give me dry and cold with blue skies anytime over these grey skies and constant drizzle !

I live near Manchester and at times like this I do miss London. It felt like it rained a lot less there. I did check the weather forecast for London though and it’s also going to rain there 😆

Counting down the 4 weeks remaining until my holiday in the sun ☀️

In 2020, the weather at this time was lovely. it made lockdown more bearable.

Presume you didn't live in a flat with no outside space at the time then

Sneezingdust · 25/03/2024 08:02

It’s nice to read posters on this thread who say they’ve moved or are moving to nicer climates. I really should consider it myself. I’ve already been seriously thinking whether I want to stay here for the rest of my life, and if not where.

I’ve kind of told myself depending on who gets into power at the next GE I’ll decide whether to stay or not. But even if the party I vote for win that obviously won’t change the weather issue.

AngelinaFibres · 25/03/2024 08:03

Saturday was beautiful here ( Herefordshire). I did loads in the garden and it looks so beautiful and green and fresh. Lots of new life coming through. Spent the morning at my eldest sons with his brother ,DILs and grandchildren. We ate cake and ran around the garden.Eldest grandson (2) has a Primark all in one waterproof suit and Primark wellies. The suit is mostly waterproof and he doesn't care if he gets wet. We light the fire and wrap him in a towel and re dress him. It's a mindset Op and I absolutely appreciate that you are feeling depressed so it's more difficult to pull yourself out of it. I've been alive for 58 years and March is always a bit rubbish.

Drttc · 25/03/2024 08:05

I’m going to have to disagree… we’ve been out every day regardless of weather (live in England). We do tend to rush out if there’s a time the weather app says the skies are clear though! We have worn wellies and water proof coats and generally chuck them on year-round (unless it’s been gloriously dry for several days). Our kids are primary school age and under.

Where do you live that you feel it's rained non stop for months?

Personally - West Wales.

Sagittarius · 25/03/2024 08:08

I hear you, I can't stand the rain either, or winter in general. Saturday was was so nice, the sun came out and I could feel warmth on my skin and I was able to leave the big winter coat at home for the first time in months. We went to a County park and spent hours there, just enjoying being outside, I felt so much better. Sunday and today, cold and raining again!

I also hate it when people say there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. I have no desire to to go out head to toe in waterproofs in the pouring wind and rain!

ComputerInitiateJump · 25/03/2024 08:08

I get it op but hang in there. The end of the winter always seems to drag on, but better days are ahead.
We had a lovely day here yesterday - SE. Very cold but sunny 😎.
Next weekend the clocks change and it won't get dark until 8pm.

I don’t believe for a minute that all these people are spending hours outside every day in the rain with toddlers.

Agreed, and I say that as someone who works in Early Years. We do splashy welly walks, and even attempt Forest school. But toddlers get fed up of being soaking wet (even in their full rain suits), and they get fed up of sliding and slipping in the mud. They usually last about 20 minutes before wanting to go back in.

Goldenbear · 25/03/2024 08:10

Ruthietuthie · 25/03/2024 00:16

As someone who now lives somewhere with decent weather, I understand completely. Now I have crisp winters with real snow, springs with occasional rain but also lots of sunny days, and hot summers where we swim in the pool and play tennis each afternoon. Add in beautiful autumn leaf colors and I don't miss the constant rain and gloom of Manchester one little bit.

But that’s Manchester, it is very wet there, I went to uni near there and found it disproportionately grey and wet. Where I am today south coast it is dry and sunny this afternoon. It definitely does vary, if it is only ‘14%’ less rain then I find that really surprising. My Mum lives in the midlands and even that is colder.

Lourdes12 · 25/03/2024 08:13

I hate it too. Really effects my mood. No motivation or energy. The bloody washing that you cannot hang out. Feeling guilty about kids spending too much time on screens. Living in a cottage which is already dark and damp gets even darker and damper. I do like having four defined seasons but it’s not like that anymore

Snowpatrolling · 25/03/2024 08:14

I just want to do my gardening and hang my washing out!! lol!

WhatNoRaisins · 25/03/2024 08:14

That Let the rain kiss you poem is like the weather equivalent of Welcome to Holland.

MissyB1 · 25/03/2024 08:15

Looblou72 · 25/03/2024 07:45

I know what you mean, I’ve owned and walked dogs for 25 years and have never known such wet weather and it’s not just winter the last few years. Many of my usual dog walks have become horrendous with the wet weather and I try and avoid now till spring/summer, sick of washing and wiping mud off my dog every single walk now …

Yes all of our favourite walks are literally impossible, we would just slip over and for someone with osteoporosis like me that’s not a good idea.

SuitcaseBursting · 25/03/2024 08:16

Zone2NorthLondon · 24/03/2024 22:28

how do you all cope then, the sensitive aquaphobes. Broken and unable to picnic
lacking the ability to push a pram and hold a brolly. Lashed & sodden. Unable to crack on. Incandescent at the mere mention of cracking on

You are sounding like a bit of a broken record though. And if you live in London you don’t have it as bad as many.

Easipeelerie · 25/03/2024 08:16

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 24/03/2024 19:32

No such thing as bad weather. Only bad choice of clothing.

Waterproofs and wellies on and out to stomp op.

We go to the woods and make dens

We go for a walk to feed the ducks

We go for bike rides and plan to come back as muddy as possible lol

We go for a walk to lidl, pick up lunch from the bakery and sit by the canal to eat it with brollies and waterproofs on.

We go on scavenger hunts

We go out and measure things (yes random I know but for some reason they think it's hilarious 😂)

We take our walkie talkies and play hide and seek in the woods.

We put the tent up in the garden and fill it with warm blankets and cushions and:

We play card games

We do jigsaws

We have movie afternoons

We do campfire cooking

We do wood craft

Sound like your children will have amazing memories of you.

Bollindger · 25/03/2024 08:17

Long ago like 30 years, we took the bikes hire a village hall and added friends and took a picnic each. It was glorious, no rain, no cars, just space for the children.

evilharpy · 25/03/2024 07:42

This is one of the most insufferable things I have ever read on mumsnet.

Let the rain kiss you 🙄

Canwehaveitall · 25/03/2024 08:19

I'm very much a wrap up and get on with it person. We go walking in all weathers.

But it's miserable and anyone denying it is lying. You can fully enjoy the outdoors in the constant rain. Yes you can have a bit of fun up to a point but nothing like when it's dry.

There is a lot you can't do. All my teens football matches have been called off because sure the ground isn't getting chance to dry out.
I'd like to vacuum my car, do my garden, wash the windows, sit on a bench with a coffee or an ice cream.

Wilfrida1 · 25/03/2024 08:19

Thank goodness you haven't anything serious to worry about, like cancer or a loved one dying. I am sure they would rather put up with a bit of rain.

Canwehaveitall · 25/03/2024 08:19

That should have said you can't fully enjoy the outdoors.

Thegoodbadandugly · 25/03/2024 08:21

It's great fun going puddle jumping with kids.
