Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

The issue with UK summer (on the rare occasion that it actually manages to get hot) is that houses here are built to keep heat in for our cold winters. It’s glorious to be able to get out into but it’s the miserable, sticky nights where the bedroom temp is reading 30 degrees which are the killer

How are your winters any colder than those in other countries? You live in a damp country, not a particularly cold one. What is it about the way your houses are built which keeps this heat in?

BlueBadgeHolder · 25/03/2024 00:47

@MyLadyTheKingsMother You could not do many of those activities where I am. The ground is sodden and muddy. I stopped walking in the woods because it is so muddy. I fell over once and got covered with mud, I do not want to do that again. You could not build a den there.
It is bloody miserable weather here day after day.

Rain hasn’t been continuous or constant. The definition of constant, is continuous, uninterrupted.
perhaps some parts have increased rain. Increased, yes. Constant , no

Relentless is another word. It may not be relentless, continuous or constant where you live but it has been either or all of those words where other people live.

Many houses in the UK are most certainly not built to keep the heat in IloveAslan, which is why many councils are investing in huge amounts of money to bring the inadequately built houses up to date with putting an extra ‘skin’ outside the single brick houses to make them more able to retain the heat.n

No, factually it has not rained constantly or continuously in the UK
Rained A lot, yes. rained More, yes. Continously,no. Constantly, no

Happy to admit I’m wrong if you can show graphs of rainfall where you live and graphs of where other people live.

Rainfall in February in different parts of the country.

Sick of wasting my life because of the rain
Anonymous2025 · 25/03/2024 01:08

I’m in the north of Scotland so winters are bad and I’m very used to it but I swear this winter has been so so long. It started earlier , all we had was storms and rain after rain after rain . We live near amazing beaches and mountains and I don’t seem to be enjoying any for ages . If it was rain alone that wouldn’t be to bad but it’s windy , non fu*g stop wind and rain and grey skies 😫. It’s like the never ending winter . I need sunshine

Thanks, that’s a lot of rainfall. I wonder if consistent would be an acceptable word as we appear to be down in the murky, miserable depths of language to explain why A. Lot.Of. Rain. Is making people feel so utterly miserable.

Not much point posting anymore I guess. Crack the fuck on. Hah!

Oh, and a LOT more rainfall in OTHER parts of the UK.

I’m out.

BBC will be scaring you off with draught and global warming soon when it stops raining for 5 minutes 😁

FloozyMcGee · 25/03/2024 01:39

Looking at "Similar Threads," you are clearly not alone. I used to live in a town renowned for the fact that it not only rained practically every day, but it just drizzled. No storms, no lightening, no downpours, just rain. Finally I started taking a low-cost vacation to sunnier climes for a few days during winter holidays. Even though it still drizzled for a couple of months (or more), it made winter feel so much shorter.
I also got a "Happy Lamp," and used it religiously. That made a big difference.

But I don’t enjoy the rain. It’s cold. The view is grey and bleak. I want to feel the sun on my skin, see the lovely view, stop for a picnic and just soak up the vitamin D. If that makes me some kind of weirdo then so be it.

I'm with you. I want to cut my grass but it's soaking and mowing it would damage it. Soon, it'll be long enough to hide a squadron of triffids.

thebestinterest · 25/03/2024 02:57

Where are you OP? That kind of weather sounds utterly depressing. I could not do it. Could you move?

We are in Devon and I honestly believe it has rained every single fucking day this year.

Those of you saying 'it's March, the weather is appropriate for March', I assure you it has been warmer and drier in previous years.

We have pictures of our mums birthday (18th March) sat having a picnic in the sand dunes .

I feel your pain the weather is well and truly shite here too.

The weather is always unpredictable in March/April, the rain is certainly not unique to this year. A quick look at my camera roll tells me it was snowing in March last year yet we were sitting drinking cocktails in the garden with sun splitting the skies the year before. We never know what we’re going to get for DD’s early April birthday. We’ve had beach barbecues and we’ve had blizzards - It’s normal.

For that you need to move outside the UK or even Europe

useitorlose · 25/03/2024 04:10

I get it. One of the reasons we emigrated was because of the cold and rain and unpredictability, even in the summer.

Forests are really enjoyable during the rain, it smells nice, is exciting and you barely get wet. Caveat that these must be evergreen forests, or broadleaf that have leaves. The leaves are coming out now, so you should be fine.

rowanoak · 25/03/2024 04:19

Come live near me in the Southwestern USA where it rarely rains and we have over 300 days of sun on average. I tried living in Portland OR once and couldn’t do it because the constant rain and gloominess depressed me. I love to be outdoors and I need warm weather and sunshine to be happiest.

Weather really affects my mood and I love a few rainy days to splash around or cuddle up indoors but otherwise it drives me crazy if it’s constantly raining and blah outside. I don’t know how you’ve managed thus far as I could only make it a couple months in Portland!

Autienotnaughtie · 25/03/2024 04:26

At a weekend we will normally do a park/walk one day (there es usually a couple of hours dry weather.)
The other day we will visit grandparents or go to a trampoline park/soft play/musuem/library if I'm feeling the need to get out.

If cost is an issue there's loads of free activities such as libraries, museums. We have a board game cafe near us so can reserve a table for £3 and play games for a couple hours.

Maybe you need to Google what's close by to you.

Where I live in Ireland, we’ve had about 10 full days of no rain + sunshine/ overcast days since last July, as in July 2023.
I live a glen surrounded by hills and the rain is so bad by now a healthy tree was knocked by a storm.
Our farmers were a month behind May 2023, we’d a reasonable okay June 2023. Then it has rained, with and without storms since.

This is exactly why I emigrated from Ireland. My husband had wanted to leave for years but I always vetoed it. Until one more day of freezing horizontal sleet was just the very last fucking straw and I said fuck it, lets do it!

I now live in Western Australia, and this thread just reminds me of what I left behind, and how I don't miss Irish (or UK, I've lived in both) weather one single bit. I'm visiting the UK and Ireland in September and much as I can't wait to see friends and family again, I'm dreading the weather.
