To think using paper plates is the height of lazy.

I keep seeing reels and videos of people, mostly (if not all) Americans serving up dinner on either polystyrene plates or paper plates.

AIBU to think that’s laziness/time saving/convenience too far? Most videos these people have decent kitchens so presumably can house a dishwasher. Not that hard, nor time consuming to stack plates.

Disposable tableware for day to day dining seems the height of laziness.

Putting the planet aside for a moment, it must just be disgusting to eat your meals on paper plates routinely. I can't imagine enjoying the food much

You're so cool

I know 😎

K0OLA1D · 24/03/2024 18:51

If we've done all the dishes and we have a birthday like cake to eat, like fruit cake. Then we do eat it off a sheet of kitchen roll

EmilyPlay · 24/03/2024 18:51

I'd happily eat a sandwich or a bit of cake off a paper plate. Anything with gravy not so much.

I bet half the people on this thread are so concerned about the planet they don't drive or fly to go holiday.

Edited

But the thing is not going on holiday or driving is fairly big sacrifice. Whereas using an ordinary china plate rather than a paper one is not significantly more difficult. Disabilities and extenuating circumstances aside.

It is quite standard in some US states. Particularly in hotels. And none of them get recycled. I hate it.

We stayed in a hotel in NY that served breakfast on paper plates. We took our custom elsewhere!

I'm actually flabbergasted by people justifying it by saying "Well I don't have a car or dishwasher so I've earned enough eco points to add more rubbish to the planet instead and I'm happy with this decision." Seriously man

Except they go in the composter so not adding rubbish at all.

Don't let what I actually said stand in the way of a good old rage though.

Go to an American supermarket and there’ll be a whole aisle devoted to disposable table ware.

Very lazy, imo - unless for a big crowd.

America is not exactly renowned for its eco- or planet-saving habits!

I think it’s genius

I mean it’s bad for the environment so.I wouldn’t, but it’s still genius

tennesseewhiskey1 · 24/03/2024 18:56

I follow someone on insta who does some cool quick meals but the one thing I really can’t stand is she uses disposable everyday for every meal - then says she’s on a very tight budget!

Oh so you get to pick what suits you to save the planet? Long haul flight, big 4 by 4 car, crack on . Paper plate OMG what about the planet!

People dont need to be perfect t avoid paper plates. That's silly, extrapolation.

If I stole as a kid, i might as well murder because i dont care about the law.

If I dont recycle every item I've ever owned I may as well not bother at all

If I owe £5k, insight as well owe £500k.

countvoncount · 24/03/2024 19:03

Wow. I'm in the tiny minority here, but I always use paper plates!
Not for proper dinner, but toast, crumpets, sandwiches, slice of pizza etc
Have done for years.
They go in the recycling bin.
Saves doing dishes, saves on hot water, and washing up liquid.

I don't drive and I've been on a short haul plane twice in 14 years. I don't eat meat, or wash clothes unnecessarily. What is the point you're trying to make?

Using throw away plates for meals you eat at home when you could just wash a plate is extremely wasteful. Driving to work? Not so much

People casually using paper plates for convenience are hardly likely to be making any positive and deliberate eco conscious choices are they? Come on.

Someone eating vegan, reducing, reusing and recycling and reducing their car journeys and eating organic food and taking a holiday abroad is hardly in the same league as someone probably doing none of that and choosing single use convenience like using a paper plate as a regular dinner plate solution.

It is fucking lazy.

Genuinely asking how does it affect your life? I mean if they're lazy, then so be it. What do you get out of it by them being lazy?

My view entirely.

JMSA · 24/03/2024 19:05

Fine for a 'do', not good for everyday use! Presumably they can't be recycled when dirty either.

I've already said I use paper plates sometimes. I'm not the one frothing about the planet while taking long haul flights etc. That's the hypocrites on here.

I bet a fair few are happy to pollute the air with their fancy wood burners too.

I’d be surprised if the paper plate crowd is the same as the wood burner crowd.. but perhaps MN could commission a survey

They likely can’t be recycled once used tbh, the grease/crumbs/food scraps usually mean the machines won’t be able to recycle them.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 24/03/2024 19:09

It’s appalling, so awful for the environment. Fair enough occasionally for a party but not daily. Should have a very high tax on all single use items like that
