To think using paper plates is the height of lazy.

I keep seeing reels and videos of people, mostly (if not all) Americans serving up dinner on either polystyrene plates or paper plates.

AIBU to think that’s laziness/time saving/convenience too far? Most videos these people have decent kitchens so presumably can house a dishwasher. Not that hard, nor time consuming to stack plates.

Disposable tableware for day to day dining seems the height of laziness.

When did I say it was convenient to me for my own reasons? Would you like me to head to my local Caffè Nero + Costa and demand that they stop using disposable cups because MN said so? Get a grip

There is absolutely no good reason to be using disposable cups, cutlery or plates at home. If you can somehow justify that then you have an issue with severe laziness.

Edited

You actually don't have to use disposable cups, you can buy a reusable.

There is good reason for me to use paper plates when I damned well feel like, so take your ablist crap and get a grip of yourself.

It's not a strange comment in the context of the reply. People are saying oh its OK if people are disabled. Like we have an excuse for use of paper plates. So my question is how are you able to know this? Hth

Your reading comprehension needs some work. I was making, as I said, a "general observation" that non-disabled people should wash up rather than use paper plates. I have no need to know the level of individual people's physical ability, since neither I nor anyone else will be demanding entry to people's houses to check on their ability to wash up.

HTH.

Ableist crap? A bit of a bold assumption considering you have no idea who you’re talking to. I’m disabled after major spinal surgeries - somehow I still find the time and energy to chuck my (real, non paper!) plates in the dishwasher.

Good for you, surely you should be even more understanding that others have different needs then.

And your dishwasher is absolutely garbage for the environment too (and bloody lazy).

EmilyPlay · 25/03/2024 17:54

I wonder how great all the chemicals in dishwasher tablets are for the environment.

That’s great for you. I don’t have a dishwasher. I’m willing to bet that the majority of posters on here saying paper plates are lazy aren’t washing up by hand every evening.

Which is great until you’re left walking around with a dirty cup that you can’t store in your bag without leaking old coffee everywhere

They seem to manage. Presumably they empty it before returning it to their bags.

I have a dishwasher now but that’s only been in the last few years. Before then I wouldn’t have entertained the idea of using paper plates to save the seconds it would take to wash up.

Even if it’s something like toast or crumpets I still have the knife to wash up, it takes another 5 seconds to wash up a plate, and no more water or washing up liquid.

Dishwashers are pretty energy efficient these days. Even after considering the embodied emissions.

You go ahead and justify it to yourself however you can.

For me washing up is a big chore partially because my kitchen tap doesn’t have any hot water so I have to boil the kettle to get hot water to wash up which means I don’t feel I can wash up until I have a pile to do or it seems a waste of boiling the kettle but then when it’s become a big pile I feel overwhelmed as it’s not a 5 second job any more. Anyway, obviously one plate does only take 5 seconds or so to wash but I’m assuming most of those who use paper plates aren’t just using one, if you use one for every meal and have kids etc too then you’re reducing the washing up you need to do significantly.

I very much doubt that those people who are saying they use paper plates don’t have a hot water tap in their kitchen.

LookAtThatCritter · 25/03/2024 18:59

I have an American husband and I put a stop to using paper plates pretty quickly. We use them now for whenever we have parties and food is buffet style, but I hate the waste so honestly sometimes I insist on just using regular plates still.

LookAtThatCritter · 25/03/2024 19:00

But yes, growing up his family used paper plates for pretty much everything so it's just normal to some people.

You do realise that eco friendly dishwasher tablets exist, never mind good old fashioned washing up with soap and water? Stop trying to desperately justify your grim and lazy ways of living

No, but they probably have their own reasons. My point is that other people often have factors going on that you don’t and just because you find it easy to just throw things in the dishwasher doesn’t mean dealing with dirty dishes is equally easy for others. I’m sure you make choices I wouldn’t understand or would think are lazy or unnecessary or a waste of time etc, but I don’t walk in your shoes. It’s easy to judge others when you only look at the world through your own perspective.

Yes, and sometimes that factor is that they are lazy fuckers with no standards and don’t care what kind of a world they leave for their children.

My dishwasher is a new addition to my life too - it may come as a shock to the lazy bunch of posters here but even in my many years of having to do old fashioned washing up I still never felt the need to stoop to the low of using paper plates. Shock horror!

Obviously if they have kids they don’t care what kind of state the world is in as having children is pretty much the worst thing you can do for the environment! No one genuinely environmentally conscious would choose to procreate.

DonnaBanana · 25/03/2024 19:25

Toilet paper has no plastic coating and therefore biodegrades, all solid matter will get sieved out at the sewage treatment works and either used as fertiliser or used to generate energy.

Can they just make paper plates that are actually paper then? They need to take all this pointless plastic out of things. We did it with straws and that has worked out very well.
