To think using paper plates is the height of lazy.

I keep seeing reels and videos of people, mostly (if not all) Americans serving up dinner on either polystyrene plates or paper plates.

AIBU to think that’s laziness/time saving/convenience too far? Most videos these people have decent kitchens so presumably can house a dishwasher. Not that hard, nor time consuming to stack plates.

Disposable tableware for day to day dining seems the height of laziness.

Spangler · 24/03/2024 20:19

When I was in America it was (depressingly) common. In fact, I rarely saw people using crockery.

bonzaitree · 24/03/2024 20:24

Everyone’s circumstances are different- some people need to use disposable plates etc for many different reasons.

Wow. I'm in the tiny minority here, but I always use paper plates!
Not for proper dinner, but toast, crumpets, sandwiches, slice of pizza etc
Have done for years.
They go in the recycling bin.
Saves doing dishes, saves on hot water, and washing up liquid.

Same here.
And once a week, we have a 'picnic' tea - which is basically just sandwiches and lots of random 'party food' type bits, all served on paper plates - just to save me the hassle of cooking and washing up for 1 day out of 7. My kids absolutely love it, they always eat the lot, and it's a complete game changer for me after a (usually) stressful week. If that makes me lazy, so be it!

Whatifthehokeycokey · 24/03/2024 20:27

My American ILs do this if they're feeling lazy. They presented it to me as a lifestyle hack.

No @K0OLA1D

Well its not. HTH

Genuinely asking how does it affect your life? I mean if they're lazy, then so be it. What do you get out of it by them being lazy?

It’s terrible for the environment

Patrickiscrazy · 24/03/2024 20:32

YANBU, OP.
But when I think about living on my own again one day, (in an apartment), this idea came to me couple of times! 😁

The environment?! It actually makes me feel a bit queasy when I see stuff like this when I thought the trend was meant to be going the other way. Our school / area has a reusable party plate/cup set you can borrow - I love that kind of thing. And yes I know cars/planes etc worse but putting stuff in landfill can be avoided

RosePombear · 24/03/2024 20:34

I used them a lot when I was going through a really low patch. It was much easier than having to wash everything up. I suppose you could say it was lazy, but it really helped me eat.

And how do you know if somone is disabled?

Strange comment. I don't need to know, do I? I was just making a general observation. I'm not the paper plate police, I'm not going round to people's houses to assess their health and berate them for not washing up.

whyismysoupcold · 24/03/2024 20:37

A few years ago I spent Christmas with my American in-laws. They had enough plates for all, but instead used Christmas themed paper plates. I was pretty shocked tbh.

ANGIEPANGY77 · 24/03/2024 20:38

I'm an American living in a southern state. I never use paper/plastic plates and utensils. Additionately, I would be hard pressed to think of any of my family or circle of friends who routinely uses them.

Paper plates are great when my depression is bad and I'm not looking after myself properly.

Mumoftwo1312 · 24/03/2024 18:34

With just one general waste collection a fortnight, our wheelie bin can't cram in more on an everyday basis. Paper plates are really bulky - one meal for the whole family is practically half a bin bag already

Would they not go in the separate paper / cardboard bag not general waste. I can't see why people would use paper plates and I'm far too much of a tightarse to buy themI'm

Alwayswonderedwhy · 24/03/2024 20:42

I didn't know this was a thing. It is very lazy but more importantly not environmentally friendly.

AlizeeEasy · 24/03/2024 20:45

I use kitchen paper if I’m just having a sandwich or toast or something similar. Just don’t see the point in creating more work for myself (I don’t have a dishwasher)

Jellybeanz456 · 24/03/2024 20:51

If I have any left over after parties etc I use them for toast or sandwiches but that's about it x

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 24/03/2024 20:52

When I was a single parent working over 50 hour weeks with two school runs a day paper plates were the best thing ever Monday to Friday. I was dead on my feet saved me washing up clean kitchen with no real effort as I batch cooked meals on Sundays.

TerfTalking · 24/03/2024 21:02

Forgetting the idleness and the environment, who the fuck seriously enjoys a good meal off a paper plate, eaten with a plastic fork? I struggle to drink wine out of anything other than fine glass so the idea of eating off cardboard with plastic is revolting.

I’ve been to the states probably 11 or 12 times and other than takeaway never eaten this way over there.

Stupidliefromfriend · 24/03/2024 21:03

I am stunned this is a thing. We use paper plates once a year for DD birthday party and then the unused ones are put into the party supplies bag for the following year.

It would not in a million years occur to me to use them instead of crockery. I can't stand anyone eating not at the table (and it must be set properly too).

There is something a little sad about this.

DeedlessIndeed · 24/03/2024 21:04

I think some of the best value things to buy are nice cutlery, glasses and crockery. (The same with nice sheets and bedding) You use them multiple times, everyday and they generally last for years.

I would feel a bit slovenly to use single use at home. Maybe a bit disrespectful to whoever made the meal to? And I'd probably resent the ongoing cost.

However horses for courses.

byteme1011 · 24/03/2024 21:05

Agree that I don't enjoy meals eaten from paper plates, they go soggy usually the stuff falls off and like another poster said the plate is the easiest part to wash!

That being said I'm not judging anyone who is struggling to have enough time to feed their kids using them

Zfactorstar · 24/03/2024 21:21

Another American chiming in here, Midwestern to be specific. Tic Tok is not real life. Although im sure there used more often then other parts of the world, they're mostly for specific events, picnics or big outdoor get togethers. There not expensive but not cheap either, so a huge waste of money to be used every day. I don't know a single person who does.

AhBiscuits · 24/03/2024 21:40

I had no idea this was so common. There are some seriously lazy people around. Eating off paper plates is horrible too.
