AIBU to say that honey, jam, Nutella are all unhealthy foods despite small amounts of benefit from the 'natural' ingredients

I keep hearing people adding honey/jam/Nutella to their toast because it's 'healthy' and they believe it's making their high carb snack better as a result. I never know whether to say anything as I am no expert and if people believe it's healthy then maybe they feel better as a result.
Would you counter an argument or just smile, nod and say nothing?

I'd wonder why I gave a shit

PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon · 23/03/2024 16:33

Surely nobody thinks those things are healthy Confused Honey at least is unprocessed, but everyone knows its basically pure sugar.

Who have you heard say this?

DuskyEvenings · 23/03/2024 16:34

Who on earth thinks that???

MonsteraMama · 23/03/2024 16:35

...who thinks these things are healthy? They're obviously not. They are yummy though.

NuffSaidSam · 23/03/2024 16:35

I don't think you can compare honey and Nutella tbh. I've heard people say honey is good for you (for hayfever/sore throat etc.), but I've known anyone think Nutella is a health food!

AuntMarch · 23/03/2024 16:36

Beyond it being a natural way to sweeten something I've never heard anyone say honey is healthy (just healthier), and never heard anybody make any claim about jam and Nutella beyond it being nice!

Talipesmum · 23/03/2024 16:36

Never heard anyone say any such thing

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 23/03/2024 16:36

There are no “unhealthy” foods but there are unhealthy quantities. I’d be minded to let other people enjoy their choices, unless you want to be labelled a killjoy

Cockapoopoopoo · 23/03/2024 16:36

No one argues these things are healthy. Some types of honey do have additional benefits though

Floatlikeafeather2 · 23/03/2024 16:36

Jam?

toomanyy · 23/03/2024 16:37

YANBU, I love them but haven’t had them in ages due to the high sugar / palm oil. Crazy if people think it’s healthy.

Supermarket bread is also bad for you so no part of that breakfast is healthy.

ThreeTreeHill · 23/03/2024 16:37

I don't think I've ever heard a single person say Nutella is healthy

But equally what exactly does a spoonful of honey do to you?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/03/2024 16:37

Honey is just sugar refined by plants and bees instead of pipes and pumps. None of these things are healthier and I never met anyone daft enough to think they were.

SquashPenguin · 23/03/2024 16:37

Literally no one claims this. I eat Nutella out the jar because I love it, not for the health benefits 🤭

MatildaTheCat · 23/03/2024 16:38

Are they the same people who say that giving up smoking is bad for you because it makes your stressed?

Or the ones who say the world is flat?

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2024 16:38

Well I think honey is healthy

It's 'pure sugar' in the sense that fruit is

ie. Healthy

Only looks think otherwise

AhBiscuits · 23/03/2024 16:38

I don't know anyone who thinks that.
Do you spend a lot of time with people of low intelligence?

DanielGault · 23/03/2024 16:38

Black tea and dry bread is the only way to go sure. In between self flagellation 🙄

Sunnysidegold · 23/03/2024 16:38

I mean maybe from the POV that they eat the healthier food if it's more palatable with a bit of honey or Nutella?

Like I'd eat a pile of vegetables if I had a dip for them 😀

While honey is natural and has supposedly some health benefits I don't think you can come out and call such sugary stuff healthy.

Lilyhatesjaz · 23/03/2024 16:38

You should definitely tell them. Toast should always be eaten with marmite.

PrincessTeaSet · 23/03/2024 16:38

A slice of wholemeal toast with butter plus one of the items is fairly healthy I would say. Better than most breakfast cereals anyway. I mean eating Nutella from the jar obviously wouldn't be

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/03/2024 16:39

If your diet is otherwise good, a bit if honey or chocolate spread on your toast is hardly a problem. But I've certainly never heard anyone claim Nutella or jam would add to the healthiness of anything! Honey maybe.

wiffin · 23/03/2024 16:39

The adverts do try and portray Nutella as healthy. Milk and nuts. Leaving out all the sugar, palm oil and calories. I am aware some honey is supposed to have health properties (manuka honey?). Never seen anyone say jam is healthy. Regardless of the fruit.

They are all basically a sweet treat. Not a health food.

Branster · 23/03/2024 16:40

Apart from raw honey, there's zero health benefit to the other items you listed OP.

And a small quantity on toast is hardly nuclear zone disaster area level. It's just something sweet that some people enjoy tasting.

PaminaMozart · 23/03/2024 16:40

Who are these people?

I thought by now everyone knows that all forms of sugar and UPF are really bad for you...

Okay, people find it difficult to combat cravings for this shit, but I've not come across anyone who things they're healthy.
