AIBU to say that honey, jam, Nutella are all unhealthy foods despite small amounts of benefit from the 'natural' ingredients

I keep hearing people adding honey/jam/Nutella to their toast because it's 'healthy' and they believe it's making their high carb snack better as a result. I never know whether to say anything as I am no expert and if people believe it's healthy then maybe they feel better as a result.
Would you counter an argument or just smile, nod and say nothing?

Sometimes I wonder why people have issues with food. Food is food, what's unhealthy isn't jam or honey or Nutella, it's this way of labelling everything unhealthy, healthy, skinny...... sorry mini rant over.

Okay, people find it difficult to combat cravings for this shit, but I've not come across anyone who things they're healthy.

Everything in moderation though surely?

Well I think honey is healthy

It's 'pure sugar' in the sense that fruit is

ie. Healthy

Only looks think otherwise

Fruit also contains fibre, vitamins and minerals though.

Honey might be marginally better than putting granulated sugar on porridge, but it would still be healthier without the honey.

I have never heard anyone refer to honey jam or nutella as healthy....OK some people are under the misconception honey is vastly better than sugar.
Nutella and jam are not natural either

I am not a healthy eating guru by any stretch but even I know this.

Never heard any call toast either a "healthy snack" or a "high carb snack" either. Not that there is anything wrong with toast, or carbs.
But surely only an imbecile thinks ADDING carb in the form of the sugars in those toppings is counteracting the carbs in the bread???? I mean Seriously?

No you add it to your toast because dry toast is shit, and it really doesn’t matter because really what’a teaspoon of Nutella as part of a balanced diet.

I add these things to my toast because they taste nice - but I'm under no illusion that they are 'good for me'. Whoever thinks this ? Then again - I doubt a scraping of jam on your morning toast will have any huge impact on you, unless you are sensitive to sugar .

Honey is probably one I would agree with you on. I don't think everyone realises that although it's a natural product and compatible with Mediterranean and UPF free diets, it is basically liquid sugar and should be used sparingly. I believe its slightly lower down the GI index than granulated sugar, but it's still sugar.

It only ever matters in the context of the entire diet.
My daughter has jam on toast for breakfast every Saturday and Sunday. She never has chocolate spread due to allergies and I have tried to get her to have honey and she refuses. She has a piece of chocolate after swimming once a week. She has various sweet things through out the week which vary from day to day, week to week. These make up a small proportion of her diet and the rest is based on whole foods and very little processed foods because of extensive allergies. Even something like a sausage can be too tricky to find as a safe item.
I don't think any of her medical team were thinking that jam on toast twice a week would mean her diet is unhealthy. It's all about balance

I’ve def noticed lots of American tik tokkers insinuating honey and jam is somehow healthy while they slather it all over some home made crumpets etc …. I think her name is Nana Smith? Impossibly beautiful women making everything from scratch in expensive white clothing.

I dont believe in healthy or unhealthy foods, foods are just foods, its your overall diet that counts

Having said that, no I havent heard or, or dont know of people saying that they would consider those items to be 'healthy' (for those that believe in healthy vs unhealthy foods)

Agree about honey though, loads of people swap from sugar to honey and seem to think it's somehow loads healthier.

Nobody thinks Nutella and jam are healthy - literally nobody.

As for honey, everyone knows it is full of sugar but some people do think it has medicinal qualities (eg local honey for hay fever) and for them the placebo effect may outweigh the sugar harm.

I had picked up some pork scratchings, and while waiting to pay, he loudly declared,' These are quite healthy mum they only have 2 ingredients, salt and lard!

I wouldn’t compare honey to Nutella. Nutella is ultra processed with quite a few crappy ingredients (but I’m all about balance in the diet).

Honey may be sugar but it does contain antioxidants and is a quick release source of energy (so good for athletes and active kids). I don’t think it’s great to demonise and label food though.

Im gonna be honest some people would argue that as a snack something salty and fatty with very few ingredients is better than something sugary with loads of E numbers and emulsifiers etc. I wouldn’t go as far as to say pork scratchings are healthy but he kind of has a point with the ingredient list.

The advert does or did make a big deal about how it contained a whole hazelnut per jar or some none sense. Trying to market it as being healthy which really isn't on

You look at the ingredient list for Nutella, nothing stands out as particularly bad. As always, everything in moderation.
