Hands up: do you chuck rubbish out of your car window?

My city is having its annual big litter picking weekend. Hundred of volunteers clearing their local areas and placing full bags near bins for the council to collect. It's fabulous😊.

My "picking" area tends to be heavy traffic and it's clear most of the litter is food and drink related and thrown from car windows when drivers are waiting at traffic lights.

I am quite interested to know who does this and why (someone must!). It's not dropped by accident and there will surely be an easy to use bin when you leave your car? Posted for traffic and the mix of opinions.

I tend to have a positive mind set when volunteering..no point getting too angry about litterers - I just hope one day, someone spots a windswept middle aged woman clearing the roads and decides to change their behaviour!

Maybe a hair, you know? Picked off my pullover or so. 😂
Nothing else.
Edit: OMFG, definitely NOT bogies!

dream8 · 23/03/2024 20:06

Never in my life. I have seen people do it though.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 23/03/2024 20:08

No. Never. And I would rip my kids a new one if they did.

I have also returned rubbish to people who have done it.

A long time ago, in a previous life, I was in the Balkans and the rubbish was atrocious. In my mind, I associate rubbish in hedgerows and watercourses with post conflict chaos.

This country is now worse than post war Bosnia.

Newcrocs · 23/03/2024 20:12

God no! I keep a couple of small bin bags in the glovebox for any rubbish accrued on car journeys where food or drink is consumed. I wouldn't throw litter on the street, it's the same thing!

YachtMistress · 23/03/2024 20:14

No Never
Not acceptable ever

TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled · 23/03/2024 20:17

Absolutely never. Lazy selfish arsehole do this.

ive seen two men recently do this when ive been behind them.

Mountainclimber50 · 23/03/2024 20:17

No never.

2Old2Tango · 23/03/2024 20:19

No I don't. Lazy, scummy, disrespectful people do this.

When I walk my dog over the field I take a carrier bag with me to pick up the plastic bags, tin cans, bottles, food wrappers etc that I always find strewn on the floor. It's disgusting. I wonder if these people realise they're wrecking the environment for not only themselves, but for their future children. People are just so lazy.

I travelled through a 3rd world country on not fit for tourism roads ... the amount of rubbish on the roadside and in the landscape was horrendous - this was some sort of shrubbery grassy plains with a huge amount of plastic caught in the vegetation.
However, if you came near the touristy areas, all was clean and lovely.

I'm sure we are heading this way in the UK ...

OneTC · 23/03/2024 16:28

Nah a mate did it once and I made him get out and walk home

Good for you!

Combattingthemoaners · 23/03/2024 20:21

Never! I absolutely detest this. The idea that someone else will just pick it up enrages me.

midlifeattheoasis · 23/03/2024 20:22

Never in my life have I done this

RecycleMePlease · 23/03/2024 20:24

It wouldn't even occur to me to do it. And TBH, I've only seen cigarette butts posted out of windows in front of me (which is also bad obviously) - and yet someone must be doing it - I often see mcdonalds cups/monster tins up the lane home.

Thejackrussellsrule · 23/03/2024 20:31

I live in rural Shropshire, 18 miles from the nearest McDonald's, still people will drive this far, presumably on their way home, to lob it in the hedgerows.

intergalacticplanetary · 23/03/2024 20:32

I despise littering. I had a go at an old man last year who was brazenly chucking rubbish into the river! 😡

Pumpkinsspice · 23/03/2024 20:36

I picked up litter from a forest while on holiday once. Beer cans shoved down a rabbit hole was a low point. What scumbags are out there doing stuff like that!

grinandslothit · 23/03/2024 20:42

No I have never thrown rubbish out the car window.

The likely culprits are men

In all honesty who do you think are the demographic doing this?

Abugfine · 23/03/2024 21:09

Have never littered but I have received a penalty notice for throwing a ‘cigarette’ out of the passenger window of our car. Neither of us smoke.
I was actually throwing a large bug towards the grass at a set of traffic lights. Unbeknownst to me, my arm was witnessed leaving the window and a fine was issued and sent in the post.
Being a non-smoker with asthma and heart issues wasn’t considered relevant when I tried to appeal and I had no choice but to pay or go to court and risk further fees.
I’m still cross about it 10 years later. I held that bug for ages trying to find a safe place for it!

Imbusytodaysorry · 23/03/2024 21:09

No it’s disgusting , dis respectful and there really is no need . It defiantly says a lot about the person doing so.

Mum2jenny · 23/03/2024 21:10

Never, why would I?

Allfur · 23/03/2024 21:13

I also hate fag ends on the floor

Lemoncokezero · 23/03/2024 21:14

suburburban · 23/03/2024 20:47

In all honesty who do you think are the demographic doing this?

I feel in many developing countries it's about the infrastructure and facilities to deal with rubbish. For example waste collection at home. So people are then likely to litter. We all have this as service here so there's no excuse.

Also what do youean about which demographic does this?

ThePlumsOfWilfred · 23/03/2024 21:15

Absolutely not.

I sometimes put recycling in the general rubbish if I cba to wash it.

I sometimes pick my nose.

I have been known to just top up the clean dishwasher with dirty dishes and send the whole lot for a 2nd clean, rather than unload and reload.

Today I tumbled my socks and pants even though it was technically sunny enough to dry outdoors.

But I never, ever chuck rubbish out my car window.

snoopyfanaccountant · 23/03/2024 21:18

I never have and never would.
I live in a town centre and we get rubbish thrown into our garden on a regular basis - disposable vapes, cans, needles, Mcdonalds meals, Greggs coffee cups, etc. It does my head in clearing it up.
