Hands up: do you chuck rubbish out of your car window?

My city is having its annual big litter picking weekend. Hundred of volunteers clearing their local areas and placing full bags near bins for the council to collect. It's fabulous😊.

My "picking" area tends to be heavy traffic and it's clear most of the litter is food and drink related and thrown from car windows when drivers are waiting at traffic lights.

I am quite interested to know who does this and why (someone must!). It's not dropped by accident and there will surely be an easy to use bin when you leave your car? Posted for traffic and the mix of opinions.

I tend to have a positive mind set when volunteering..no point getting too angry about litterers - I just hope one day, someone spots a windswept middle aged woman clearing the roads and decides to change their behaviour!

Of course I don’t. I wouldn’t dream of being so scummy.

QOD · 23/03/2024 18:37

I think people do it sometimes to hide
bad eating from partners or parents
i live on a very quiet country lane between 2 hamlets and probs 3 days out of 7 there’s either McDonalds or KFC packaging lobbed along the verge.
got to be the Same person as it’s not a through route
also we have an alcoholic in the hamlet to the left (thankfully lost her licence last summer) and there was also a steady supply of cans of Stella

ZippedOpenMouth · 23/03/2024 18:37

I seen drivers finish a mug of tea and throw the mug out of the window so that it smashes

QOD · 23/03/2024 18:39

Also I think even fruit is littering now

Feefer · 23/03/2024 18:40

No but I’ve seen it happen plenty of times or emptying camping toilets in a passing place 🤬

tedgran · 23/03/2024 18:41

I live near a Royal Park, there are litter bins, but when they're full people just put their rubbish on the top. Birds scatter it and sometimes the deer eat it, if you bring a picnic in take the litter home. It's always awful after a bank holiday

KimberleyClark · 23/03/2024 18:41

Never.

MrsDilligaf · 23/03/2024 18:41

It is disgraceful behaviour. I've never thrown anything out of a car or intentionally dropped litter.

DD has been brought up to know better than to even consider littering.

Wigtopia · 23/03/2024 18:43

As someone with a puppy, it is the most annoying thing ever. Pups love sticking everything in their lovely little mouths and since having to extract things from a pup’s mouth multiple times during each walk, I’ve noticed the street rubbish even more.

Edited

Walking along a road near Coates (Cirencester way) the verge was absolutely full of gin cans and redbull cans, literally thousands. I think someone has a drink problem and is throwing them out their car on their way home from work (get in car at work, drink, throw cans out before getting home). It's all the same cans so assume its the same person.

Yes. Had to remove a semi mouldy banana skin from pup’s mouth last week. So gross. Slimy and squishy which made my hand disgusting for the rest of the walk

Gettingcolder · 23/03/2024 18:46

The only thing I have ever chucked out of a car window is an apple core onto a verge in the countryside.

MoreHairyThanScary · 23/03/2024 18:46

We used to have a neighbour that did this, ( only started when then moved it and stopped when they moved out) it made no sense as they were only a few steps to their bins.... but the street was always a mess with fast food wrappers!

Zebedee999 · 23/03/2024 18:47

Where I live I get a lot of people parking up so I litter pick once a month to collect all their rubbish (all the usual stuff but this week there was a preganncy tester and a wine bottle).
I actually caught on my CCTV two hoody clad youths sitting on my front steps then stuffing their McDonalds packaging in my hedge.
Fundamentally I think the majority of it is simply poor parenting passed on to kids who carry on the poor parenting.

housethatbuiltme · 23/03/2024 18:50

No, Ive never thrown anything out of a car window... probably why my car spends most its life looking like a moving trash heap lol.

I live on a mountain and we get horrendous winds, sometimes when opening the door something will fly out in the wind (usually my kids doodle from school or a newsletter they brought home that my kid let go off) and while trying to juggle two young kids and a busy road I'm not in any position to drop everything and chase it but no who would deliberately throw trash out of a car?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/03/2024 18:50

I’ve been known to get out of my car and remonstrate with folk emptying their ash trays at traffic lights.

Busyhedgehog · 23/03/2024 18:50

I don't and never have. DS tends to just leave stuff in my car...so I try and empty it out when we get home.
However, I remember my parents used to throw cigarettes and apples out of the car when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure they still do.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 23/03/2024 18:50

PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon · 23/03/2024 16:25

Absolutely not and if my kids did it I'd be fucking livid with them.

Who are these people who chuck rubbish out of the car?

^^^ 🧐👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Me too.

DM swept her drive and outside her home and I do the same. We always take rubbish home, I’ve also picked up rubbish in parks and taken it to a bin. I also pick up my dogs poop and other people’s dog poop and cat poop in my garden! 💩

swayingpalmtree · 23/03/2024 18:50

wrong thread lol

Createausername1970 · 23/03/2024 18:51

Apple core or similar, that might feed some creature, before it breaks down into the earth.

Other than that, definitely not.

VariantHela · 23/03/2024 18:51

Absolutely not.

AlpineMuesli · 23/03/2024 18:54

I don’t, but see it often.
Bus drivers do it. And you can often see the pile on the sidings next to where the train front carriages stop.
I’d like to see more signage saying Don’t Litter. They could easily add it to the Variable Message Signs on motorways.
Then again, the parks all have signs saying pick up your dog poo and it’s still ignored.

SkaneTos · 23/03/2024 18:59

No, I do not throw rubbish out of the car window. I do not throw rubbish on the ground at all.

In the weekends I sometimes go rubbish picking (thrash picking?) in and around my village. With good gloves, good shoes, and a good bag it is actually quite a rewarding experience, but also sad and frustrating that people throw stuff on the ground.

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 23/03/2024 19:01

Apple cores

Isthismyforever · 23/03/2024 19:02

I've been known to throw an apple core or a banana skin out of the car window but wouldn't do it with anything else. I always thought this was ok but then I read that banana 🍌 take a long time to decompose so haven't done this since.
