Hands up: do you chuck rubbish out of your car window?

My city is having its annual big litter picking weekend. Hundred of volunteers clearing their local areas and placing full bags near bins for the council to collect. It's fabulous😊.

My "picking" area tends to be heavy traffic and it's clear most of the litter is food and drink related and thrown from car windows when drivers are waiting at traffic lights.

I am quite interested to know who does this and why (someone must!). It's not dropped by accident and there will surely be an easy to use bin when you leave your car? Posted for traffic and the mix of opinions.

I tend to have a positive mind set when volunteering..no point getting too angry about litterers - I just hope one day, someone spots a windswept middle aged woman clearing the roads and decides to change their behaviour!

No, never have and wouldn't have accepted it from my children either.

It's the same as when people just throw it on the floor or leave litter on beaches or in the countryside.

Just why?

I smoke and never drop the ends on the floor either. If I can't see somewhere to put it, I keep hold of them or put them in my pocket/an empty water bottle until I find a bin.

bloodyeffinnora · 23/03/2024 16:32

no way, hate litter louts and fly tipping

NuffSaidSam · 23/03/2024 16:32

I was once in a taxi and the taxi driver did it, so I have witnessed it first hand.

Delatron · 23/03/2024 16:32

I live next to an alleyway. Big fence - litter bin at the end of the alleyway. Yet people still chuck rubbish over my fence and in to my garden. People are strange. Maybe they get a kick out of doing it? It’s so awful for wildlife too all this rubbish everywhere.

ilurktherforeiam · 23/03/2024 16:33

Fuck no, never. Always wondered who did too and why?? I have a garbage holder in my car, super simple.

prayforthecottransfer · 23/03/2024 16:33

Never, ever.

I think anyone that does wouldn't admit it and post on this thread, surely?

userxx · 23/03/2024 16:33

Absolutely not. I'm shocked by the amount of litter I see daily, what's going on!

toomanyy · 23/03/2024 16:34

Never, but I have seen people in other cars do it. Saw a man and child get in a car at the supermarket the other day and the man threw out some packaging out of his window. I was waiting for DH and had to stop myself going out to him and telling him to pick it up.

PaminaMozart · 23/03/2024 16:34

We used to m live in a Very Posh Borough. Full of toffs, City traders and DINKs. Unfortunately we were on the route home from the pubs. Every Saturday morning I'd pick up a bin bag full of take-away wrappers and beer cans from our hedge and front garden.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 23/03/2024 16:34

I have thrown an apple core or similar into a hedgerow before although not often as I don’t often eat fruit like that in the car. I wouldn’t ever throw something that wasn’t native and biodegradable out of the window though and don’t understand why anybody would when it’s literally no effort to just put the rubbish down into the car until stopping somewhere.

IncompleteSenten · 23/03/2024 16:35

No.
I live in a touristy area and people are disgusting!

I do not understand why people throw rubbish out of a big metal container that will ultimately return them to their home where there are bins!!

People leave dirty nappies and bottles filled with piss and all sorts of crap behind them.

The same people who go out presumably to enjoy the countryside leave it a horrible mess.

Do they enjoy walking past other people's rubbish? Do they go oh this is such a lovely view, what it needs is a few sandwich wrappers and empty cans of coke. Or say hmm what a lovely fresh smell, if only I could smell a shitty nappy it would be perfect.

I don't get it.

Years back I saw a bloke in McDonald's car park open his car door, put his rubbish on the floor, close his car door and drive past two bins to get out of the car park.

I will never understand why anyone thinks that littering is ok.

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/03/2024 16:35

I almost started a thread asking the same thing last week. I'd stopped whilst driving down a country lane to pick up beer cans and was incensed!

Iminpatchinghell · 23/03/2024 16:36

Years ago, a friend did it in my car. Told him outright not to litter and leave it in the car if he can’t be bothered to put it in a bin. We were late teens at the time. No idea if he still does it. Gave me the rage! So yeah, people do it and doubt they’d own up to it.

Icantpaint · 23/03/2024 16:39

Lots do and I guess lots who post on this site do, but they know it’s scummy so you’ll never get anyone admitting to it

Mytholmroyd · 23/03/2024 16:40

I have never thrown any rubbish out of my car except, I admit, the odd apple or pear core into a hedgerow/wood (not in a built up area) on the assumption that it's no worse than them dropping from trees like other fruits and provides degradable food for wildlife. I leave them in my garden too and they always disappear as does a lot of the fruit we grow!

FedUpMumof10YO · 23/03/2024 16:41

No of course not

Hedgerow2 · 23/03/2024 16:41

OneTC · 23/03/2024 16:28

Nah a mate did it once and I made him get out and walk home

Well done!

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 23/03/2024 16:42

No never.

Although like a pp, anything fruit related (apple core etc) goes straight out the window if we're in the Countryside.

PoulezVous · 23/03/2024 16:44

I dumped a bloke due to this years ago. Wasn't the only reason but it was the final straw. I just couldn't believe it, and when I challenged him he said "It's alright, it's biodegradable". Yes, after 33 years (it was a crisp packet) you moron!!

I would support the death penalty for litterers.

Cloudful · 23/03/2024 16:45

Nope, it makes me livid to see. We litter pick in our local area, it boggles my mind how people just finish with a can for example and just throw it on the ground! When DS and his mates got to the age they went camping locally and having a few beverages, they’d bring their rubbish home in carrier bags. I’ve drilled it into them from being little it’s just disgusting. And if you saw the inside of DS car, you’d know he wasn’t chucking litter out of his window 😂.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/03/2024 16:46

The kind of people do this are the same kind who get upset about flags on football shirts. All pissy about respecting their country yet fouling the place up with their own litter / cig or vape smoke / dogshit.

Kittycat333 · 23/03/2024 16:46

I've never dropped litter in my life and never will. I have utter contempt for anyone who does. I used to live in Amsterdam and volunteer on the canal boat where we picked up litter with nets. It's foul.

Gorgonemilezola · 23/03/2024 16:48

Nope. Lots of litter picking going on around here (it's needed). Time to strenuously bring back the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Sarvanga38 · 23/03/2024 16:48

NuffSaidSam · 23/03/2024 16:32

I was once in a taxi and the taxi driver did it, so I have witnessed it first hand.

I hope you told him that you normally tip taxi drivers, but you don’t tip antisocial litterers?

Wishlist99 · 23/03/2024 16:48

Literally never crossed my mind to do it and when I see others doing it (am in London and it’s rife) I am horrified and think what utter fuckwits
