Hands up: do you chuck rubbish out of your car window?

My city is having its annual big litter picking weekend. Hundred of volunteers clearing their local areas and placing full bags near bins for the council to collect. It's fabulous😊.

My "picking" area tends to be heavy traffic and it's clear most of the litter is food and drink related and thrown from car windows when drivers are waiting at traffic lights.

I am quite interested to know who does this and why (someone must!). It's not dropped by accident and there will surely be an easy to use bin when you leave your car? Posted for traffic and the mix of opinions.

I tend to have a positive mind set when volunteering..no point getting too angry about litterers - I just hope one day, someone spots a windswept middle aged woman clearing the roads and decides to change their behaviour!

I think it comes from the parents? Surely, if you bring up your children to respect their environment and not litter then they don't or is that too simplistic?
My children had it instilled into them never to litter from a young age and came home from school or wherever with pockets full of crap but I was happy to see this as it meant they weren't throwing it away.

Now, grown up, they have the same attitude and go camping with their friends of like mind and always take their rubbish home (can be a lot!) and leave as they find. They don't find it an inconvenience but rather take pride that they (young ones) can do this.

I also think there should be more government announcements on TV about the detrimental affects of litter on our environment. We used to have these years ago and it wasn't quite as bad then.

Pombearprincess · 23/03/2024 18:10

Was talking about this earlier today. So much rubbish everywhere. Totally disgusting and scummy.

LastnightIDreamedofManderley · 23/03/2024 18:14

No, but I once had a car of teenage boys speed past who decided to throw their remains of their McDonald’s at me while I was walking along the road, complete with half drank milkshakes etc. Absolute fucking morons.

ThreeFeetTall · 23/03/2024 18:16

I did it once...age 5. My mum took the window winder off the inside of the car door so I could never open the window myself again.

suburburban · 23/03/2024 18:16

Never, infuriates me that people do this

tiggersfamily · 23/03/2024 18:18

Only apple cores

FrenchMustard · 23/03/2024 18:19

Never done this but I also wonder who does!! There is a road I travel on regularly for work and it’s horrendous, the verges are covered in litter. They have signs up asking people not to do it but doesn’t stop people at all!

SurelySmartie · 23/03/2024 18:20

No and people who do are utter slobs.

Rainynight09 · 23/03/2024 18:23

No, I don't. I hate people who do.

Mariannelovesconnell · 23/03/2024 18:24

Of course not, but I don't think Mumsnet is the demographic that would. There's a certain breed of folks that would indulge in this pastime along with many other anti social pastimes, I see them all the time when I go visit my mum, they would love anyone to challenge them, their lives are small and anti social behaviour is all they've known they're a scourge.

anythinginapinch · 23/03/2024 18:25

No. I think an apple core once or twice on the grounds it will "feed the mice" along a country road. I simply cannot imagine doing anything so stupid and selfish

Jifmicroliquid · 23/03/2024 18:26

Absolutely not! And if the car infront of me does, they get a blast of my horn.

Mycatmyworld · 23/03/2024 18:26

That’s one thing I cannot do, & I’ve been driving 40yrs, all rubbish has to come home with me

dandeliondandy · 23/03/2024 18:28

Absolutely not! My mother lives in the South West and the amount of times we have seen holidaymakers throwing dirty disposable nappies, fast food wrappers and any other junk out of their car windows, disgusting motorhome people emptying toilet tanks into laybys rather than pay to dispose of it properly and leave the beaches looking like a dump leaves me with nothing but contempt for those who treat the world we live in like a trash can! Selfish and horrible people!

Topseyt123 · 23/03/2024 18:30

No, never have I ever done this. It is something only fuckwitted scumbags do.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/03/2024 18:31

Never. I never drop litter anywhere, never mind from a car window. I have turned into someone who calls people out who do, or who let their children do it. Little makes me more angry than the absolute ignorance of litter-droppers.

Georgyporky · 23/03/2024 18:31

I saw my exH empty the car ashtray on OUR DRIVE.
He was puzzled by my anger.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 23/03/2024 18:32

I have never, not once, intentionally dropped litter. My parents were fierce about it, as am I. My dad saw someone drop litter from their car and picked it up and launched it back in through their open window.

abracadabra1980 · 23/03/2024 18:32

Never. I was brought up to be told that this was wholly unacceptable. It is everybody's world and we all have to share it/keep it clean.

I think it's probably teens going to McDonalds/fast food places, just driving about and not mature enough to care about the planet. I'd like to think mine were brought up to understand they would be hung, drawn and quartered if I ever caught them doing it. Don't even get me started on fly tippers.

dontdillydallytoolong · 23/03/2024 18:32

Of course not. Found an Amazon bag with human excrement and loo paper on our country lane last week🤮

Mother2375 · 23/03/2024 18:33

I have literally seen children do this with their mothers on their phones. They have actually chucked rubbish right near a bin on purpose. Then looked at me with a smirk. The kids were about 10 and 8 years old. The reason why they do it? Because they are such pond scum and the fact that doing something like that makes them feel superior to others. My younger son once walked up, picked it up and threw it in the bin and said,”Mum, they are either blind or stupid.” Of course I live in the city, so you can get some seriously grime people. People always have an excuse to be sh*tty and always seem to have extremely low standards as humans.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 23/03/2024 18:33

People who litter are thick as shit, disrespectful cunts.

Summerishere123 · 23/03/2024 18:34

I once saw someone chuck an empty can out their window. I was only about 17 but furious. They stopped at the lights so I picked it up and put it on top of their car.
Dick heads

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2024 18:35

I had a boyfriend when I was younger who used to do this. Used to think it was funny to lob rubbish out of the car window while driving. I thought it was repulsive and told him so. I’ve never done it.

Hermione101 · 23/03/2024 18:36

Absolutely vile. It’s so embarrassing when my family comes to visit the U.K. from back home. Such a dump, litter everywhere.
