Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

Well I think you are incredibly kind to bake and take into work, and my office would love you!

One of my colleagues does similar every now and again, and he lets us all know in advance when he's going to bring things in and the idea behind it is to encourage us to have a break and to speak to each other about non-work related things, a very good nod to wellbeing.

Ignore your colleague and her friends, I'm sure your office would be gutted if you stopped being so kind

PopandFizz · 25/03/2024 21:02

How ridiculous!
This is just office culture. You've got to have will power.

I had a note stuck to my desk saying 'do you not feed, wedding diet' and then when I got pregnant a few months later someone stuck one up saying 'please feed me, current cravings are:' and then they would post it note my cravings lol fun times.
I got a lot of maccys chocolate milkshakes at one point so had to take it down lol

myladybelle · 25/03/2024 21:06

@PostItInABook i don't disagree with you

acatcalledjohn · 25/03/2024 21:08

This thread has been great Grin

For those posters suggesting it is hard to avoid office cakes: these colleagues get their way most of the time.

OP says roughly once every 6 weeks. That's 1 out of every 30 working days. That's approx 3% of the time. In other words: these two colleagues get their way 97% of the time.

I suggest you bake more @Bibblybumblebee . Once every two weeks would still be only 10%. They'd still get their way 90% of the time.

Suggest you also create a nice and colourful pie chart with the above figures, print it out and display that with your bakes... Halo

I do a very low carb diet and personally I think everyone should be more appreciative of it. The selfish woman accross the desk from me at work shamelessly brings in crisps to eat, sandwiches, baked potatoes, high carb veg such as parsnips and onion... She even shares her crisps with our other colleagues on occasion, right in front of my face. I'm 16 stone, and it's basically because of people like this, everywhere you go...

Or wait, am I just a chunky, boring killjoy??

Wow! Didn’t expect such a huge response. I’ve read every one and thank you for sharing your opinions.

Funny thing is it’s probably me that should be on a diet - I’m a size 18- I don’t love my body but I’m very grateful for my body.

These two ladies are so slim!

Ive spoken to my manager. He’s rolled his eyes and told me I’d get a disciplinary if I stopped baking 🤭
He told me I didn’t need a health and safety certificate.

I also called the HR office and the guy there said it was fine as long as once in a while I took some up to their office as well. I’m baking the a cherry Bakewell tray bake for tomorrow 😋

Love this 🤣 your boss sounds ace.

I can't eat dairy because it makes me ill. Do I complain if someone puts milk in the fridge? Absolutely not 😆

Hope you enjoy your next baking session. I want some cake now!!!! We used to have cake Wednesday every week and it was the highlight of our week x

They need to get a grip!
You sound lovely!

I only bring in cakes every now and then definitely not every week. I was going to bring Easter biscuits in next week.

My manager always helps himself and has even requested a particular cake.

I just was so worried I would get in trouble.
These two woman are normally ok. When I came in with some cake last one said ‘oh here comes Betty Crocker’. I laughed but now thinking it was said in an unkind manner 🙁

They are vile.

“You don’t have to eat them, fat cunts.”

ToWhitToWhoo · 25/03/2024 21:15

I think it's lovely when people do!

And after all, no one's forced to eat it!

The idea that you would need a hygiene rating! I mean, I suppose some people don't like to eat things that they haven't prepared/ seen prepared/ obtained from an official cafe or shop; and that's up to them; but it's beyond paranoid to treat it as some sort of breach of an imaginary law.

😂 love this post!

As an aside I found I loved celariac chips done in an air fryer with smoked paprika on way more than normal chips. Still carbs but much lower.
I'm also on lower & unrefined carbs to help control a condition (not diabetes).

Confused118 · 25/03/2024 21:19

You sound like a very generous person - have a virtual thumbs up and great that your boss supports you too.

I wish there was someone you where I work!

I just laughed so much at your comment, that my cat jumped and dashed away from me!

How did the cakes go down today?

Shouldigoforarunorhavepancakes · 25/03/2024 21:44

I haven’t read all comments, so maybe it has been mentioned before but please, write all ingredients in a visible card. Not just the main allergens but also some people can’t have ANY quantity of alcohol, for example, so it’s important if you use it, to write it on a label.

Dimondsareforever · 25/03/2024 21:51

Come and work where I work!
They are being miserable…
it’s very kind of you to bring cakes in ..
it’s not your problem if they are on a diet!

Cauliflowery · 25/03/2024 21:53

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/03/2024 17:13

I agree with you about wishing unhealthy food wasn’t so prevalent and I think those points about willpower are excellent but it has to be a balance between the needs of people who are overweight and the positives of everyone else getting to eat lovely cake, so it really comes down to how often. Cake every week- unreasonable. Cake every six weeks- seems fair enough.
What would be really annoying would be if every other aspect of the obesogenic society was allowed to continue unhindered but the home bakers were stopped, so people would still be eating UPFs full of palm oil and additives but miss out on delicious baking made with high quality fresh ingredients.

Agree.

Home baking really isn't the problem (and OP sounds great).

I bet the two mean women eat ultra processed food for lunch.

Flipper95 · 25/03/2024 21:54

Every 6 weeks? That isn't even often, and it's really lovely of you. I'd be thrilled if you were my colleague. What a pair of miseries!

MrsScone · 25/03/2024 22:11

Now you have no choice but to up your game! I’d have to decide to trial new recipes for something I’ve always wanted to crack. Edit the recipe everyday and ask loudly for feedback and suggestions for further improvements. “Ooh good idea, I’ll try that tomorrow.”
What absolute miseries. I also love baking and few things make me happier than seeing people enjoying what I’ve made.
On a serious note, imagine living life like that :( poor souls

MaryFuckingFerguson · 25/03/2024 22:29

They are being utterly daft. I would
never, ever eat baked goods brought into the office, but most other people would and thoroughly enjoy them too.

Hygiene certificate? WTAF…

🎉🎉🎉 Very happy you have had the last laugh here. If they don’t want to eat the cake then they don’t have to!

keeponandonandon · 25/03/2024 22:34

Who cares if it upsets them? We cannot continue with this culture of having to change what we do to spare people getting upset/offended! It's a joke that these two grown women are putting their problem of a lack of willpower on the OP.

If anyone has allergies I’m sure they will ask prior to eating. She’s not running a business and no one has to eat the cake.

sleepymama2020 · 25/03/2024 22:36

What??
they ought to learn self control for goodness sake, surely you can just walk past it
also to deny yourself ANY treats just points to them, as you say, having a terribly unhealthy relationship with food.
I’d just keep baking, stuff them. Shove a satsuma on their desks for their treat and balls to them what a load of tosh

UniversalAunt · 25/03/2024 22:43

OP, would you do a coffee & walnut sponge, pleeeeeeeze.

Maybe a traditional bread pudding in a flat tray?
Jamaican gingerbread?
Treacle tart?

Every six weeks or so is remarkably generous & friendly.

Bunnyannesummers · 25/03/2024 22:49

I’d wait till the next team meeting and ask to add an agenda item “as neurotic woman has pointed out, I shouldn’t be bringing in this baking I do apologise for making you all feel uncomfortable blah blah won’t do it again” and watch your other colleagues look baffled and her have to explain
