Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I'd ask your manager and if they agree with her then I'd make sure to tell the rest of your team why there's no more cakes

LalaPaloosa · 23/03/2024 19:17

Oh my goodness. You have to be joking! Keep baking. If they don’t have enough self control not to eat your baked treats then that’s their problem. How absolutely ridiculous!

Hammy65 · 23/03/2024 19:21

What a lovely kind person you are. I’m just retired now, but when I was teaching, a colleague did exactly this. We all absolutely loved it!! Those folk on a ‘diet’ just picked up their coffee and disappeared!!! You’re bringing a bit of joy into a workplace - good on you 😊!!

Believe it or not, some people don’t fancy eating cake every bloody day. This happened somewhere I worked and I hated the passive/aggressive assumption that my not eating cake was an either a criticism of others or some deep seated issue for me. It wasn’t. Personally I don’t have a problem with cake.

I'm sure nobody gives a shit if you choose not to partake. Why would they?
More for everybody else.

busymomtoone · 23/03/2024 19:38

Omg - what a complete joy thief - bet her colleagues love her!! She does realise it’s not compulsory to eat them? I’d love you to be at my work !! Carry on being kind and ignore this misery guts. Let her take it higher if she wants - until then be your sweet self!!

CelestiaNoctis · 23/03/2024 19:45

I would just speak your manager. And if they say its OK then just say they said it was fine. Just because someone has cake doesn't mean you have to eat it.

AllyArty · 23/03/2024 19:53

she is being OTT with you. If u wanted to stay on the right side of them you could bake a low/lower calorie option for them.

Pigtailsandall · 23/03/2024 19:58

This is the sort of person who'd pick a fight with the Tesco duty manager over the Krispy Kreme display right by the tills. The world revolves around her and her diet. What miserable colleagues.

Come and work with us! We are always looking for lovely people and baking skills definitely help

Don't dream of doing this, op.

pineapplecrushed · 23/03/2024 20:06

carry on bringing in cakes. They have no business asking you not to.

PlumbersWifey · 23/03/2024 20:21

I hate it when people bake cakes to bring to work. Makes me feel sick I always imagine I'll find their hair in it or something. I've never ate any. Yet I love cake.

Why would they?

Because cake/calories/body size, shape/dieting/ weight control/self control/judgement/food as treats… is all a huge issue for many women. Shouldn’t be, but it is.

Morganrae1 · 23/03/2024 20:27

Not your fault they have no willpower.

StoatofDisarray · 23/03/2024 20:27

I’m a woman in my late fifties. I’m a bit portly and losing weight is very difficult at this age. We have a woman in our office who occasionally brings in a lovely homemade cakes. When she does, I either stay away from the area where the cake is until it’s gone, or have a little bit. What I don’t do is whine at the thoughtful colleague who brings in her lovely bakes and make my inability to resist cake everyone else’s problem.

TL;DR: they are being dicks. Pay them no mind!

Ap42 · 23/03/2024 20:32

Meh, I'd he tempted to bring them in more often just to piss them off! Miserable moo's. I'd be over the moon if someone at work bought in baked goods!

Itislate · 23/03/2024 20:56

Tell them to shut up and deal with it. It's not your fault if they're fat, weak willed individuals. And tell them they are not welcome to share the cakes you bring in. End of!

Havinganamechange · 23/03/2024 21:01

Tell the silly cow to sod off and go get some self control. I think it’s a great thing to do for the team and I’m sure they really appreciate it. If people don’t want cake, they don’t have to have it.

MrsLeavemealone · 23/03/2024 21:03

I work in a hospital and the turnover of cakes and chocolate is extremely high. As soon as its placed of the reception, they vanish in seconds, but luckily they are quickly replaced.

I love this publication in the the usually very serious British Medical Journal 😀

What a pair of numpties!
ignore the haters. You are not selling the cakes - that are just greedy.

BigMandyHarris · 23/03/2024 21:30

Try taking in some crack cocaine instead

I work at a GP surgery. We are inundated with home made cake from patients and staff (including Partners' children who bake for us). I don't think anyone has ever mentioned H&S.

Ignore them - they dont have to eat it!

Samamfia · 23/03/2024 22:01

As a young and poor office assistant, I literally lived on cake and stuff people brought in 😆these women need to get some willpower if they don’t want to eat your obviously temptingly good offerings. The pass-agg pretence to be concerned about you getting in trouble would be enough to make me unwilling to comply with their request.

TheMerryTiger · 23/03/2024 22:03

Oh it's fine- keep doing what you do. People can make their own choices.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 23/03/2024 22:27

They sound dreadful. Their diets are not your problem! Where’s the line? If someone is eating an “unhealthy” sandwich would they take offence at that and refer you to HR? How about the chocolate by the tills in supermarkets - are they going to sue Sainsbury’s? Keep baking and fuck em 😂
