To be sad about what was said to me today

I have been lucky enough to get the keys for a new build from the council. It has a mix of private rent, council and home buyers. Some of the houses are still being built. Today I was waiting outside to get the keys and some builders went past in a car and said something along the lines of ‘…getting a house from the council’ and laughed really loud. I have been very lucky after fleeing DV with a 3 year old and I feel really upset and embarrassed

OP posts:
UniProud · 22/03/2024 15:48

I'm now in my 50s but when I was 19 the only other woman working for our now well known building firm, confided in me she went home to DV each night.
I was 19, what could I do, but it really stuck with me.
My friends from uni are quite a bizarre bunch, mostly now well paid in quirky niches. One you'd recognise off the TV, another is in the west end and we have a lovely eco warrier still angry. My DH is a professor and I have a super cool job that is great/entertaining in a small talk dinner party situation. We sound like we have it all.
One of us is the head of a social housing trust, we are all really fucking proud of him. He's a genuinely lovely bloke, great kids, strong marriage - he partly does it because he grew up in a council house after his mum got out from a bad situation.
Please enjoy your new home and if you have a moment just thank someone who cares and really wants to hear how much you appreciate your lovely new home.
I'm very excited for you, have a great weekend.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/03/2024 15:50

Nasty people are everywhere and their raison d'etre is to be deeply unpleasant to others.

You are so much better than them - tell yourself regularly. And enjoy your new home!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 22/03/2024 16:27

You are exactly the type of person who deserves to have a new house like this.

It's more than a house, it's a safe haven, a new start and a real turning point and opportunity to live the life you deserve rather than the previous abusive life you had to endure.

Fuck them OP, go enjoy your new house and to hell with anyone who thinks otherwise.

Never let mouthy ill informed assholes ruin your day.

ohpumpkinseeds · 22/03/2024 16:31

Don't let them take up space in your brain rent free my friend!

Enjoy your new home!

Blueblell · 22/03/2024 16:31

Congratulations and enjoy your new home!

Ignore them and please don’t let them spoil what should be a happy day!

rach333 · 22/03/2024 16:35

Don’t let some idiots ruin this big moment for you. You’ve been through a lot, and you absolutely deserve to enjoy your new home and celebrate your fresh start.

There are, to put it bluntly, always going to be dickheads out there. I had a similar experience with men in a van (surprise, surprise!) a few years ago. It was right at the tail end of Covid restrictions being dropped. Masks were no longer required in shops and indoor spaces, but were still in medical settings. I was going to the dentist, first time since before Covid. I’d parked, and was walking to the dentist’s office. As I started to approach the building, I took out my mask and put it on. The dentist’s is right next to a set of traffic lights. The van drove up and stopped at the red light, and one of the men inside decided to wind his window down and shout out at me something along the lines of me being a ‘fucking brainwashed sheep who’s been taken in by all the lies and is so completely stupid that she’s still wearing a mask now even when ‘they’ have said we don’t have to anymore’. I’d literally put the mask on 5 seconds previously. To go to the dentist. Where they were still mandatory. I just rolled my eyes and ignored them completely, and walked into the dentists. Some people are just completely ignorant, and quite frankly, stupid, and unfortunately feel the need to share their ignorance with strangers, quite often by shouting it out of car windows 🙄🙄 Try not to give it another thought, they’re honestly not worth it!

LakeTiticaca · 22/03/2024 16:36

Ignore the haters. Social housing is there for those in need and it's good to hear that new ones are becoming available. Wishing you and your child a safe and peaceful home x

FangsForTheMemory · 22/03/2024 16:39

Don't let wanky comments like this upset you, OP. Enjoy your home!

TimetoPour · 22/03/2024 16:48

@Luceeviejayne everywhere you go in life there will be a cunt. School, work, shops etc- there will always be one.

You have made the hardest step of your life and said “NO” to one of the worst type of offenders. You won’t be treated like that and you stopped him. You are a wild woman and you can do anything.

Those losers and their small minds will always be worthless. You my lovely, are a hero for getting child away from a hideous life. Do not allow brainless idiots to make you feel any less.

MouseMama · 22/03/2024 16:48

Those are ignorant people. You are on your way up and this is a brilliant new start for you and your precious little one. Don’t let anyone take the shine off this for you. We are all rooting for you.

Frequency · 22/03/2024 15:04

Where are these "free" houses you speak of?

I want one. I have to pay for my social house.

Biscuit

This is a very flippant and thoughtless comment. Clearly you were never told that if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all. Start practicing that now.

Frequency · 22/03/2024 17:07

@DrBlackbird

I'm thoughtless for understanding that social housing is not free???

Butwhataboutthesealions · 22/03/2024 17:11

@DrBlackbird

Challenging an idiot who appears to think that council housing is free is neither flippant nor thoughtless.

Maybe you should take your own advice (or read the thread properly).

Sameratdifferenthat · 22/03/2024 17:12

Oh love, they're just wankers. You know that, we know that, probably the other blokes in the van know that (but they're getting a lift with Billy Bollocks so pretend to find him a "right larf").

A lot of strangers on Mumsnet, me included, are delighted for you getting your own safe haven at last. Truly delighted 💐 All the best to you.

Andthereyougo · 22/03/2024 17:12

Enjoy your new home , it’s a great feeling when you escape DV and get that fresh start that’s all your own. ( I still remember that feeling of peace, relief and sheer joy)
Stuff the idiots who really shouldn’t be let out unsupervised.

JoanThursday1972 · 22/03/2024 17:16

Honestly, people who name call and cat call are the actual twats, not the intended target. I'll never forget a mean girl from university yelling across the street at me about what a mess I looked. I was asked "didn't you feel small?" No I didn't, but I knew she looked absolutely stupid.

Well done you, just forget these waste of space idiots and have a lovely time in your new pad.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 22/03/2024 17:18

@Luceeviejayne I’m the daughter of a mum who managed to leave a DA situation when I was 3 years old, many decades ago when she got loads of judgement. I have been proud of her every day of my life for having the strength to get out of the situation.
Those judgemental idiots will probably never have the capacity to understand how strong you are. But your child will ♥️
Congratulations on your new life and congratulations on your new home 💐

I think you need to find the post this poster was responding to

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/03/2024 17:21

Fuckem, you got a lovely new house! What do you care what a pair of van wankers think?

GreyShaker · 22/03/2024 17:21

Do not be embarrassed. You are very lucky to have this home and deserve it so don’t let anyone put you down. People have something to say about everything, don’t take it to heart x

StopStartStop · 22/03/2024 17:28

Congratulations on your new home. And congratulations on the system working for once, and you and your little one getting somewhere decent to live. I hope you have many happy years there. Don't let anyone steal your joy.

Good luck to you in your new home. Its exciting isnt it. Most people have lived in a council house and once they buy their own home they get really snobby. This white van man is nothing. You dont know him he dosnt know you. Forget about it he is a slug.

I'm not sure that it's accurate to say that most people have lived in a council house....

Depends where you're from surely? The vast majority of housing in my area used to be social housing. So most people have come from a SA background
