To absolutely HATE it when people park like this?! (pics included)

I live in a neighbourhood which is almost entirely on-street parking and spaces are at a premium, and I can’t describe how fucking annoying it is when a few cars are parked in such away that they occupy way more spaces than they actually need. In pics attached there is normally space for 5 cars to park neatly between the H-bar and the end of the double yellow lines. The bloody massive Barbarian has literally not moved for about a month and the Skoda has taken up two spaces by itself. And on the other side of the road the red car has left a shitload of space at either end as well.

Are these people so monumentally shit at parking that they absolutely must have that much room or they can’t possibly get in or out, or are they just thoughtless, selfish arseholes?

YANBU drives me insane as well I put it down to drivers complete inability to parallel park. I also get annoyed with people parking too far over to one side in parking bays which means there is no room to park in the bay beside them. Just selfish crap drivers imo.
I am however great at parallel parking, even had a group of lads applaud when I parked in space once, one of my of my proudest moments 😂

PoeticReality · 22/03/2024 11:09

some owners of bigger /newer cars seem to do this a lot - presumably to protect their expensive vehicles = selfish // when we were in Italy, saw several drivers push other (double-parked) vehicles out of the way, to free up space 😮

OldTinHat · 22/03/2024 11:10

Don't start me on parking! Atm I have a filthy, mud splattered, untaxed vehicle parked in my allocated disabled bay. I've reported to the police, council and DVLA and no one gives a shit.

GasPanic · 22/03/2024 11:12

You can get another car behind that skoda without it going on the yellow lines.

That's how Italians park! They bump vehicle in front and behind to get into space. Nightmare when you have a hired vehicle we used to park miles away on empty streets to stop this happening and to avoid getting a huge bill when returning car to hire company

NorthernSpirit · 22/03/2024 11:17

Selfish entitled t@ats.

Where I live on street parking has marked bays (which are huge). If you are unable to park in a marked bay you’ll get a ticket. Which I applaud.

Nope. I tried. Even with just a few inches between my car and the Skoda I was still over the double yellows by about a foot. A smart car maybe, or possibly an old Mini, but not my little Fiesta!

I used to have a neighbour who parked like that. He had a long saloon car and he would hog a space that 3 small hatchbacks could gave used.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/03/2024 11:23

I'm shit at parking, however my ideal would be one of the spaces on the end where I'd park right up to the available end so that I'd then either have no car in front or no car behind. If I have to go in the middle then I'm maybe guilty of leaving a little too much space in front but I have a very small car so would still be taking up one space.

I try to avoid street parking if I can because I know I'm shit. I have no sensors in this car either. On a positive note, I've never hit anything.

Igmum · 22/03/2024 11:23

Well done OP. This is soooooo annoying. It's ridiculous to park like that.

BruceAndNosh · 22/03/2024 11:26

People parking 5 foot away from end of bay really annoys me. The Council has worked out how much space needs to be kept clear beyond the bay, there is no need to leave that unusable space.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/03/2024 11:27

Oh and I do always check when I get out to see if I can shuffle up a bit to make sure I allow space for another car. If I was in that skoda I'd either move forward a bit or reverse back so I was on the end and allow someone with better skills to pop into the middle.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 11:30

The sensors are a PITA. People will park right up to your bumper with them.

BruceAndNosh · 22/03/2024 11:33

I got blocked in when I parked in a bay and returned to find a new car parked in front of me, 6 inches from my bumper yet he had left 4 feet in front of his car and the end of the bay.
Thankfully he returned about 5 minutes later and was apologetic when I pointed out his thoughtless parking

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 22/03/2024 11:33

I would be letting tyres down I am afraid!

toomanyy · 22/03/2024 11:34

Elebag · 22/03/2024 10:41

They may have had to park around other cars at the time. I occasionally look like I park like a twat in my street but I didn't have a choice as another car was blocking half a space. It's really annoying.

The chances of a car blocking that driveway / H bar are low, and there isn't space for another normal sized car to have parked there. Ergo, selfish arsehole.

dontbelievewhatyousee · 22/03/2024 11:38

This wouldn’t bother me. I’d personally rather not park like it but I don’t expect others to share the same values. There used to be a parent at my dd school who would take photos of parents parking and send it into the group chat, to rant about this exact thing. Which felt a bit authoritarian to me.

whyismysoupcold · 22/03/2024 11:40

It's because too many people no longer care about others. It's an inconvenience to so many, and let too inconvenient for them to just think about their car's placement for a split second.

amylou8 · 22/03/2024 11:45

I live in a Victoria terrace road where parking is at a premium. I get similar rage, the amount of people that do this is unbelievable. 2 cars had managed to occupy space for 5 today by parkjng like compete twats.

Herdingcatz · 22/03/2024 11:47

Then surely they may have tucked up next to another car who has left and you haven’t seen. You CAN get another car (or motorcycle) in the gap, you’re just annoyed because you can’t get your particular car in the space.

The question is should you tuck up next to the next car in the gap or against the bar? I’d align up against the other parked car, leaving space behind for smaller cars or motorbikes behind. Nothing is likely to park between us- another driver is more likely to use the space behind.

I live on a victorian street with permit parking. Cars weren't around when the street was built and now many households have at least one car.
Parking selfishly means that some inhabitants can't park in the street. It's bad enough when I have just done a big supermarket shop and it's dark and raining, and I have to carry it in several trips from a nearby street, but if I had to do that with a baby and young child, it would be almost impossible.

DDivaStar · 22/03/2024 11:54

Of course it makes no sense not to park upto a H- bar or lines. Unless there was a motor bike or something there at the time of parking.

My neighbours have a H bar ober their single driveway and park one car 1/ 2 on the Hbar and half in space and then another car behind. Then they leave the car in a space whenever possible to reserve the h-bar and half size space as they know no-one else will park in it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/03/2024 12:01

People in my street do that and it drives me mad. It's usually the same people doing it as well.

Saying that, I was left looking as though I'd parked like it after parking behind a tiny Smart Car type Toyota. That left leaving a space nothing else could get in and what looked like a huge gap behind me!

AngeloMysterioso · 22/03/2024 12:01

You really can’t. I’m looking at it right now and truly the only car that might fit is a smart car. A motorbike maybe, but there aren’t any round here.
