Why don't people just stop drinking?

PassingStranger · 20/03/2024 19:44

Just read two crimes that were caused by alcohol.
One a speeding drunk driver, took a car and smashed Into another car on the road killing people.

Did they really think they were going to be able to negotiate the roads properly while drunk and speeding?

Another one a vile bully of a man attacked and killed his wife while he'd been drinking and she died.😱
Now two children have been left without their mum and dads in prison.
I'm sure we can all think of other crimes where drink was involved.

When are people going to stop?
Why do they need to drink all the time (sake).🙄

It’s an addiction OP. I don’t think it’s that simple (wish it were, my extended family are terrible when drunk)

Magnastorm · 20/03/2024 19:51

My god, you've cracked it.

All addicts should just immediately stop being addicts. Problem solved.

Fucking genius idea. 😃

Sussurations · 20/03/2024 19:54

Well, it’s a disease, or at the very least an addiction (if you don’t believe it’s a disease! I’m not sure). people lose the power of choice over it. That doesn’t mean they’re not responsible both morally and in law - of course they are.

byteme1011 · 20/03/2024 19:56

Alcoholism is a disease/addiction but not everyone has it, the binge drinking culture has died down a bit post covid I think (cost of living) but I do think it's still too prevalent in the UK

Marchintospring · 20/03/2024 19:56

Theres no reason why drunk people drive cars other then they are twats sober. Even pissed people know it’s illegal.

SabbatWheel · 20/03/2024 19:59

Some people have no off-switch.
DH drinks once a week when out with friends and will typically have between 4-6 pints. I can tell when he’s had 6 as that’s his ‘twat point’ where he becomes hard work (though not argumentative, violent or anything, just annoying). I wish he would just stop at 4 but he just can’t help himself. He never drinks at any other time.

True, and I dare say most people who drive drunk are twats. However there are some people who sober up and are horrified at their former selves, accepting full responsibility and going on to lead productive lives. It is possible. Cold comfort for victims, of course.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/03/2024 19:59

They can't handle it. They should stop but they are gripped by addiction. If they were to withdraw they could suffer a fatal seizure. It's extremely easy to get booze and it's not frowned on by society. Other underlying horrendous personality disorders might drive them to act up when drinking...Many reasons but not everyone who drinks is an arse, and not every arsehole is pissed.

XenoBitch · 20/03/2024 20:00

Those crimes are committed by non-alcoholics too. It just takes too many drinks one time for something to happen.

Everyone knows drink driving is illegal, but when you are pissed, sometimes all reason goes out the window.

RainingCatsandfrogs · 20/03/2024 20:10

It's because here in the UK your looked upon as odd if you don't drink.
Most people can't have a good time without alcohol, look at the ridiculous uproar when someone posted about a wedding, involving no alcohol.
Supermarkets sell it dirt cheap.
Most domestic violence incidents involve alcohol.
It's costing the NHS a fortune treating alcohol related diseases and it has a very unhealthy impact on family life.
But hey ho, nobody gives a shit, because it's ingrained in the great British culture.

Be better for them if they did stop?

I don't think it's proven that drink drivers are necessarily alcoholics?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/03/2024 20:17

No, really?! Do you know what an addict is, OP?

Says someone who doesn't really "drink"

All addictions can be overcome, I gave up smoking by willpower and I'm sure other people have given up things too.

You need to for your own health and happiness and the safety of others

PassingStranger · 20/03/2024 20:11

Be better for them if they did stop?

Well, yes. Obviously.

Depressed people should just cheer up too, eh?

TimetoPour · 20/03/2024 20:31

What a short sighted view OP.

Drink drivers are not alcoholics, they are the ignorant scum of the earth who think, “it will never happen to me”

Those who get drunk and hurt their spouse are not alcoholics, they are violent criminals who prey on the weak.

Bad people make bad decisions. Whilst alcohol makes these situations worse, it is not necessarily the root of the problem.

Alcoholism is a secret illness. You are more likely to find they have an excuse not to drive. They are more reclusive as they don’t want their illness pointed out.

BreakingAndBroke · 20/03/2024 20:33

OP isn't talking exclusively about alcoholics, she's talking about people who drink and drive or drink and get violent. Not everyone who drink drives is an alcoholic. Not all alcoholics drink drive or get violent.

Some people are just over confident in their ability to drink and be able to act as they would if sober. Or they don't care about the consequences. Or they don't have any friends to get them home. Or they just made an awful, awful mistake. Lots of reasons, none of which make either crime any more palatable to the victims or their families.

PassingStranger · 20/03/2024 20:33

Magnastorm · 20/03/2024 20:29

Strange response.
You think it's OK then to cause such misery and devastation then to others lives just because you want to get drunk?

OP posts:
ElliottFromScrubs · 20/03/2024 20:34

Most people who drink wouldn’t dream of drink driving though. Or beating up their spouse.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/03/2024 20:37

Strange response.

People are responding to your apparent baffling lack of understanding that it's extremely difficult for addicts to 'just give up', OP.

And your response to people pointing that out to you is that they must think it's ok to cause misery and devastation through drink driving?

It's not impossible to give up addictions, when it comes to the point your addiction is ruining your life and others it definitely is time to give up.
I'm sure alcohol plays a part in alot of horrible things.

OP posts:
SameSameButDeliverance · 20/03/2024 20:41

Some, many people who are alcoholics believe they are going to be able to control the amount they drink when they drink. They think ‘this time will be different’. They don’t set out to get drunk but their off switch is faulty.

Your understanding of addiction seems quite lacking OP.
