To not worry about my manky foot (horrible pic included)

I was at a wedding at the weekend and someone accidentally stood on my foot wearing a high heel (you can see the scabby bit where that happened). Now 5 days later my foot looks like this, it seems to be getting worse every day. It’s not massively painful, but the whole area is itchy as hell. Do I need to worry or is it just a bruise? I just tried to send a photo to my doctor but they are offline and not taking any new requests.

Urgent care, looks broken.

And where does it look broken? Also can you tell me how you get X-ray vision through the internet. Seems damned useful!!

I can move it/walk on it fine, it’s a bit tender but no massive pain…is it still possible it’s broken? It was a lot more painful the first few days, it was very uncomfortable to walk or sleep.

A friend of mine fractured her foot in work and walked on it for weeks because it wasn't massively painful so she didn't realise it was broken. She ended up needing a huge ortho boot for months and months because she made it worse walking around on it. Get an x-ray just to be safe, you don't want to do more damage!

Agree that the itching and swelling round the wound should worry you. You might need antibiotics and/or the wound cleaning out, broken bones or not

Trickedbyadoughnut · 20/03/2024 15:01

Good luck, @OwwMyFoot let us know how you get on!

No need for the sarcasm,is there?

The bruising she has looks exactly like when I broke my foot and getting worse by the day. It's not unreasonable to rule out a break.

toomuchfaff · 20/03/2024 15:02

So the bruising is internal bleeding - and the purple vs green vs yellow colours is just differing amounts of blood and different stages of the blood being cleared from the area; the green to yellow is fade vs dark purple is higher quantity/newer therefore slower to disperse.

The pain is associated with blood collecting in the tissues, and the itch is with the blood being shifted as part of healing.

So; does any of the foot have new bruising? new areas of purple that weren't there the day before? - this could indicate its still bleeding internally and increase the likelihood of a break.

Verite1 · 20/03/2024 15:06

Do your toes normally look like that? Anyway the horrific bruising, itching and swelling suggests it needs a xray. No point going to GP - they won’t be able to tell either. And I walked on a broken foot for 6 weeks before I got it x rayed so I speak from experience!

OwwMyFoot · 20/03/2024 15:06

@toomuchfaff the bruising around my toes especially has got loads worse, but I don’t think there are any new areas. The whole of my foot is bruised pretty much, so I don’t have many more areas left to bruise 🤣

When I had that particular bruising pattern I was told it was specific to fractures (which I had). I'd been waking around on it for ten days by then already, painful but not that bad. Definitely get it checked.

TokyoSushi · 20/03/2024 15:11

Oh wow, agree it's probably worth getting it looked at!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 20/03/2024 15:14

Wowzers that’s a bruise ! Hope you get it sorted !

Sera1989 · 20/03/2024 15:14

Don't want to trivialise it but that's an amazing bruise! I would get it looked at as the bruising is getting worse and it's such a large area for a small wound. Good luck, let us know what they say!

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/03/2024 15:17

Just dropping in to say: the photo of your injury made my bum go funny.

kandylane · 20/03/2024 15:17

Ouch that looks bad! Defo get it checked

Mountainclimber50 · 20/03/2024 15:20

Is that a bruise or bad fake tan? I can’t tell. That area of the foot is easily broken. My DH nearly needed surgery after he got a hairline fracture there. Good you have decided to get it x rayed.

Ring 111 - Fracture clinic usually operates appointments during daytime and you may not necessarily need to go via A&E - either that or your local Urgent Care/Walk in centre may be able to advise.

Chiaseedling · 20/03/2024 15:38

Ouchy! My foot looked vaguely similar to that (more the bruising than redness) when I badly stubbed my little toe in lockdown. It was probably broken but dh just strapped it up. I may have gone to the walk-in otherwise, which I would do if I were you to get an x Ray.

PlumbersWifey · 20/03/2024 15:40

I've seen broken feet with no bruising at all. That looks like it's going to fall off. Definitely get it checked.

ImOddsAndEnds · 20/03/2024 15:42

Not an A&E jobby but definitely try to get in touch with fracture clinic/minor injuries as soon as. If it's fractured then it's an open fracture and you don't want to fart about with bone infections and whatnot if that's the case. Cracking bruise though!

It made my neck/back go funny. It does it when someone on TV hurts themselves too it's a weird feeling!!

@OwwMyFoot

I bet you said some rude words!!! I would have.

i smashed up my shoulder and my whole arms and (weirdly!!) boob went those colours!

I think you're doing the right thing though to get it xray'd & check out the wound in case of infection. I have to say the hospital dealt with my shoulder surgery brilliantly, but basically ignored my other wounds!

Hope it's just bruised xx

OwwMyFoot · 20/03/2024 16:22

Waiting in MIU now. No I didn’t say any rude words, if hurt but luckily I was fairly numbed with alcohol so it wasn’t until I was trying to sleep that I realised how much it hurt.

It’s a bruise not fake tan 🤣.

Sorry about your bum, @VickyEadieofThigh

LegoTherapy · 20/03/2024 16:26

Not everyone has a minor injuries unit at their local hospital. I don't. The GP would just send to A&E for assessment here so sometimes A&E is entirely appropriate.
On here you can only go to A&E if your limb is hanging by a thread. It's always non-medically qualified people who say no to A&E too 🙄

OP, I hope they stay that foot and that you're ok.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2024 16:26

That looks similar to mine which I later found out was broken in 3 places! I hope you're seen soon.
