To be ridiculously proud of DS

So, DS1 is 24 and has ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, long Covid and a 3rd rare neurological condition( I’m not saying what it is as potentially outing, it’s so rare)
He’s suffered with depression and crippling health anxiety (convinced he was dying of cancer). It got so bad at one point he thought he’d be better off dead than living with the misery.
He’s pulled himself out of a very dark pit and got a job!
20 hours a week for now.
Probably won’t seem like a big deal to some but I’m so proud I might burst!

It’s hard to say really. Love, patience and space to feel how he felt. Time also has helped, he struggled anyway but spiralled massively when his best mate passed away at 21.
We tell him often how amazing he is and I think he’s started to believe it.
I wish I could say we did xyz and he was better but tbh we’ve been winging it and hoping for the best.

Amazing!

caringcarer · 19/03/2024 22:42

That's wonderful news well done your DS.

Slippersareindeedsexy · 19/03/2024 22:44

Uplifting thread, so nice to read something positive. Well-done him and you are right to be proud. I would be!

AlexandraLeaving · 19/03/2024 22:55

Seriously seriously brilliant! Well done him and well done you.

If he is getting fatigue with the long covid, and with the risk of ADHD burnout, make sure he paces himself carefully and really rests when he can - 20 hours can be quite a lot when you are juggling other stuff. I’m sure you and he already know that. Just speaking with tedious long covid and ADHD experience.

But more importantly 🎉🎉🎉

Acornsoup · 19/03/2024 22:56

That's fantastic 🤩

Maray1967 · 19/03/2024 22:57

Brilliant news - an inspiring post.

He’s had such a hard time - losing a friend as well as dealing with his health problems. He’s taken an important step for himself. Very well done to him!

He’s felt a failure most of his life. Left school with no GCSE’s then got excluded from college.
I’ve said to him so many times I wish he could see himself how I see him. He’s a fab young man x

He is a fab young man who has a fab mother who believes in him. Having someone believe in you when you do not believe in yourself is better than any education.

spiderlight · 19/03/2024 23:11

What a lovely post - well done to him and I hope he enjoys the job! 😊

lifesrichpageant · 19/03/2024 23:15

Huge congratulations to your son!

SemperIdem · 19/03/2024 23:16

This is lovely to read! How fantastic for your son, and for you! Your pride is palpable!

In a previous job, I was a retail manager, my teams were diverse in every way possible. There were a few team members who really touched my heart, one was a young man with similar neurodivergencies to your son.

He ultimately left to work somewhere more in line with his interests but I remember how much I enjoyed him being on shift, how much others did, how much customers did. He was a very popular member of the team.

It’s absolutely wonderful that’s he’s taken this step and it will really open up the world for him.

Resilience · 19/03/2024 23:17

Hagpie · 19/03/2024 23:32
