To think DH cant come to this

So I am working away in London for a few nights (never had to before so don't really understand the rules)

DH said as neither of us have been to London, he could join me (obviously pay for his own transport) but surely he wont be able to stay in my hotel room?

OP posts:

This is actually quite sad.

London is one of the world's great cities, and there really is something for everyone. The range and breadth of experiences / culture / people / neighbourhoods there is unparalleled in the UK and possibly in the world.

If you aren't a curious person interested in learning about the world, that's ok to admit, but don't act like London would have nothing to show you, because unfortunately you're objectively wrong.

Utter bs and such a Londoncentric view. I live in another UK city and what you’ve said is applicable to my current home, other cities and the metropolitan nearby. Yes London is a ‘super capital’ in world/economic/banking/political standards, but for every day life? Visiting experience? Really not exceptional.

No other UK city can compare. Manchester is probably the next best thing although I've never been to Birmingham but I would guess it's not as good.

Where else in the UK can you see the same range & calibre of theatre and art?

What was the ignorant and incorrect statement?

Apologies, I hadn't realised you weren't the same poster I was replying to.

I do question your lack of life experience though that you are "staggered" to know others have different experiences than you.

No he definitely can't go.

Against company policy

Gross misconduct

It’s not helpful to say “against company policy” as though this is a fact when some companies specifically say that this is fine as long as the partner doesn’t incur the company any costs.

OP, as others have said, best to double check with your company’s policy on this or directly with your HR department to make sure they’re ok with it.

As an aside, I always recommend the free Citymapper app (or I think you can just access it as a website too) to anyone unfamiliar with London. You enter in your destination and your starting point and the app/website will calculate all the different public transport options for getting there (including which tube lines to take, which station to transfer between lines, which station exit to take etc) and will even estimate the cost of travelling by taxi. It’s excellent.

I'm not staggered that people have different experiences to me.

I am staggered that you could live your whole life in the UK and not venture to London once. And express no interest in doing so.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 18/03/2024 11:19

Given that you are only expected to work for limited hours then I say go for it. Can you go down earlier and make a weekend out of it (at your own cost obviously)?

I do love when people on Mn start talking about “UK cities” and then completely ignore Edinburgh and Glasgow

Amazing how confidently people post absolute bollocks. You don’t know this, you don’t know the policy. You don’t know the company!

I assumed this was a piss-take!

You'd almost think the UK doesn't have three other countries and capital cities.

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/03/2024 11:23

Me and my DH do this all the time. Including overseas trips. As long as no cost incurred by him is charged to your work place it should be fine.

If you are nervous you could always check with HR to make sure.

I am floored that adults born and living in the UK have never visited London

Why?
Im 63 had never been until i was 60, taken by daughter for a long weekend. No intentions of going again, and no im not sheltered i have travelled.

DepartureLounge · 18/03/2024 11:24

KatieBr · 18/03/2024 10:57

This sounds amazing, eating alone, child free, wine, BLISS

Hang on a minute, does this mean that as well as trailing along like your minder, your DH is planning on bringing a DC along too?

I think your DH's behaviour sounds controlling too (you reminded me of a character in the play Bazaar & Rummage who hasn't left the house for four years because her husband insists on telling her in great detail about all the rapes and murders that go on 'out there').

But if you've got a DC that will need to come too then it sounds like he's just desperate not to be left alone taking responsibility for his own child, and you should come down on that like a tonne of bricks imo. It's a work trip and you need to be able to focus on work. Don't jeopardise your career for him, because I've a feeling you may need to be able to support yourself in the future.

You'll be fine in central London btw.

TimeandMotion · 18/03/2024 11:25

This has probably been said but is this more about your husband being controlling than you wanting him to come too?

As long as it does not distract inform your work or cost the company any additional money to have him there, it would be fine. After all you normally go to work the day after sharing a room with your husband, don’t you?

But do not let him plant idea in your head that you are too weak or inexperienced to do this alone. Of COURSE it’s fine to go on the tube by yourself! Most people commute alone.

Pookerrod · 18/03/2024 11:26

Travelling in and around London is perfectly safe and so easy OP, please don’t feel intimidated!

Which part of London is your hotel in? I could give you some tips on what to see and do, where to go and how to get there?

Also, I’ve travelled a lot with work over the years, in the UK and internationally. If my DH fancies the location somethings he comes for a night or 2. As long as I don’t claim anything for his expenditure it’s never been an issue. It’s very common.

Rubbish it depends
I have worked in local, regional and national government and in large and small companies from FTSE 100 to tiny and it has always been fine.

fluffycatkins · 18/03/2024 11:29

It would be fine in the company DH works for and I stayed in such crappy hotels for my work no one would want to come with me.
But OP I'm sure you can manage London by yourself if you want to.

Nope, not that they want different things to me.

Just that they didn't on one single occasion, one time in their life, try visiting the global city in their small island country.

That's not about life goals or aspirations or wants. It's just about having the get up and go to do something, one time.

Often is.

For Londoners who talk about diversity and breadth of culture, many come across as incredibly blinkered.
