Rude for a neighbour to use your dustbin if you’ve never even spoken?

The house two doors down (no idea how many live in the house) that constantly have bin bags piled up on their driveway. It’s gross. We’re talking like 7+ (with an overflowing bin)

I’ve seen them start using my bin on my Ring Doorbell on the night before collection a few times now. I know it’s a non problem but it feels so entitled that we’ve never do much as spoken and they feel it’s ok to use my dustbin. They filled it so full one time the lid on my bin wouldn’t close.

Yes it’s rude of them not to ask, but if there is space in yours and they’re doing it just before the bins are collected then it’s not really worth the argument is it.

Do you know them at all? Could you knock and say I’ve noticed you adding bags to our bins, I’m fine with it if there is space but please don’t overload it.

Better than having heaps of rubbish piling up, which then becomes a hazard and needs reporting to the council.

LinaLouLa · 18/03/2024 14:23

It is a problem as the refuse collectors could refuse to empty your bin if it is over full, or they've put recycling/garden waste in your bin. Have a word with the rude bastards. And maybe drop a leaflet on recycling through their door - and the address of the local dump (pointing out that it is NOT your address!)

Crumpleton · 18/03/2024 14:25

I suspect people who put their rubbish into other peoples bins before asking would choose to only hear the first four words of your sentence.

Flakydaydreamer · 18/03/2024 14:25

Our old neighbours used to put their dog shit in our bin because ours were on the front yet they'd have to walk through their house with poo bag to use theirs. We didn't have a dog at the time and I objected to having shit in our bin because every time we opened it it smelled awful. It eventually progressed to fast food wrappers too because their teenage DD saw mum and dad do it so why not her?

Gross! This is exactly why I’d not like a neighbour I don’t speak to /not familiar with do this. You just don’t know how they’re like and what they could be putting in or if they are conscientious about packing their rubbish in a way that means lots of crap isn’t oozing out from the bags into the bin. I assume people like that aren’t going to offer to clean your bin every now and again?!

OP I wouldn’t be happy with this at all. And I don’t know about your area but in many areas I’ve lived in leaving a bin open like that could attract foxes. You should either speak to them or if you can’t face that put a sign on the bin.

OP

Are you going to take action? If so, what is it as I may be able to advise.
Be warned, the clown could turn nasty, so think about your next action and what may result from it as the woman/man is IMO a very unreasonable person

Well it’s bin collection tomorrow so I’ll be putting my bin out tonight. Their bin bags are currently piled up on their driveway and spilling onto the pavement so I’m sure they’ll be using mine. I’m going to take it out and leave it on their driveway.

Ohh I might be the bad guy here, similar situation, next door is empty & up for sale, our collections are now every 3 weeks, a few times I’ve filled their bin & put out for collection too 😬
I put it back the next morning, is this super rude?
It’s been empty a year and I’ve done it a couple of times since Christmas 🙈

I do exactly the same.
People ought to get a life.

camelliarose · 18/03/2024 15:49

It’s bloody rude and weird not to ask first

TheBirdintheCave · 18/03/2024 15:55

@Patrickiscrazy Or you could get another bin/stop producing so much waste? 🤔

Patrickiscrazy · 18/03/2024 15:55

No.

Magnastorm · 18/03/2024 15:58

It's just a bin. People get so weird about this. If my neighbour knocked on my door on bin day to ask if they could put a bag into my bin I'd think they'd gone mental.

If you've put it out on the street and there is room, who cares if someone sticks another bag in it? The only objection I would possibly have is if someone stuck some non-recyclables in a recycling bin and it didn't get emptied, but that doesn't sound like it's the case.

CrushingOnRubies · 18/03/2024 15:58

Not a problem unless you live in an area where they charge you for having an excessive number of bin bags .

I know that idea was being thought about but not sure if it was carried through or not

Toomuchleopard · 18/03/2024 16:03

Where I live we have a bin collection every 3 weeks. We always have too much rubbish for this despite recycling everything. I filled in a form with the council to request an additional bin (to be paid for) and it was rejected as you need a minimum of 6 people living in the house. So we can’t cope with the bin collection that we pay council tax for and no option to have any extra bin space. Therefore most times I have to put store general rubbish in my other recycling bins and then put them in other people’s bins in the morning of the collection. I did ask them though and I never over fill them.

we have a local private bin collection company that I sometimes use. The OPs neighbours need to find a service like that.

JuliaLilian · 18/03/2024 16:22

Yes, this is rude. Pretty easy for them to pop over and ask, rather than just assume. Plus all the other problems as other people have said.

IsignyInsomniac · 18/03/2024 16:31

It can become a problem when you don’t know what they’re putting into the bin. Also, certainly where I live, the bin won’t be emptied if the lid doesn’t close.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 18/03/2024 16:34

This is why households should have locked bins and be charged by the weight of their rubbish, that's disgusting they have so much waste. We put our black bin out maybe once every 3-4 months, I just don't know what people throw away, with recycling.

IsignyInsomniac · 18/03/2024 16:34

IloveAslan · 18/03/2024 02:14

I couldn't care less! As long as they aren't taking your rubbish out to replace it with theirs what is the problem?

Btw, I've never done it myself, and wouldn't.

Edited

Because you don’t know what they’re putting in there - it could be something that will prevent your bin from being emptied.

toomuchfaff · 18/03/2024 16:54

So if your bin is out - and able to take another bag that would otherwise stay on their drive then i see no issue however - if your bin is still in its place - and you still have stuff to put in it and you've not put it out and they come fill it up - then i see issue.

Basically - if its front and centre for binman ready to empty - then its open for adding extra rubbish too by anyone in my eyes - much prefer that to having bin bags left on the street that will stay on the street?

SherrieElmer · 18/03/2024 17:03

Very rude in my books.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/03/2024 17:27

Be nice to ask

But if you've put your bin out and space in it I don't really see the issue

Put your bin out the next morning instead

Ok, please be careful as clowns like this are most likely from the group known as 'entitled' people. Some can turn very nasty unless they are facing someone bigger. OoIf you OH is confronted by these people, I bet you it will be by a woman as they often swear and hit, push etc and once they are just shoved they start to cry and cry assault. Therefore be very careful and good luck

Pleasse keep us posted

Anon543210 · 18/03/2024 18:38

@DangerousAlchemy with my mental health being as it is at the moment I don't think it would be a good idea me confronting them at all because I'm trying not to unleash the psycho and ending up either locked up in a police cell or a psychiatric facility. Like I said I'm moving soon so I'm doing my best not to murder anyone the bins is just the tip of the iceberg with my new neighbours aswell.

BMW6 · 18/03/2024 18:48

Definitely get a bin lock OP.

Been there, had that fuckers filling my bin so I couldn't put my rubbish out. Our binmen won't take bags outside of bin nor empty a bin that hasn't a closed lid.

ScarletWitchM · 18/03/2024 18:50

They can buy an extra bin off the council or Amazon. Putting rubbish in other peoples bins is essentially fly tipping
